Tbh I know nothing about Southampton or Lambert. If you're right though they'll avoid relegation easily. I'm already concerned about our trip to St Mary's week after next :o

Lambert is the best lower league striker I have seen for a while, in terms of players that have never played EPL. Certainly a lot better than some of these so-called good strikers that have been lauded at other promoted clubs in recent years like Grant "England material" Holt and Steven "£14m" Fletcher. He will score his share of goals but not enough to get Saints much above 15th in the league.

Does anyone know is the BBC website is still going to be showing (extended) highlights of the Football League games this season?

So we've got Jones, Smalling, Evans and Ferdinand (3/4 weeks apparently) out now. Just what. :/

Smalling and Jones always seem to have something wrong with them.

Maybe they are just too eager in training or on the pitch and pick up injuries that way. Its really worrying to be honest. Last season we were plagued with injuries at the back and it looks to be the same for this season.

Evans is fit, prior to this weekend he wasn't deemed match fit but he's not injured. If Rio is out then I suspect he may be fast tracked into the starting XI tonight

Welbeck and Rooney rumored to start tonight with Kagawa playing in the hole. RVP probably to come on for 30 minutes at the end. He isn't match fit remember, since he didn't go on tour with Arsenal.

Was really impressed with Southampton yesterday from listening to the commentary and watching the highlights. Lambert has always received high praise over the years and his finish yesterday was very impressive, well placed.

Hopefully they can be a surprise package this year, need a few south coast clubs in the top flight, hopefully Brighton can join them soon.

They played fantastically for a new team to the division but City's defense is fragile at the moment and it has been throughout their pre-season, the Saints didn't really have any pressure on them because they were expected to lose... lets see how they cope against teams around them.

Two from Rooney, two from RVP and one from Kagawa please. :p

I was feeling a bit uninspired about the new season but all these new signings have reinvigorated me. Can't wait.

Evans had an op on his foot /ankle over the summer didnt he?

(not implying that means he is still injured / recovering, just that it may not be as simple as "fast-tracking" him).

Now Utd have signed a lb, and hopefully a midfielder too (the young mexican, not Kaka lol) - Im really optimistic (given how close last season ended). Goodison is always a harder match than it should be in theory, and has been a kind of bogey game for us over recent years (all be-it the 1-0 win last season)................. maybe Utd have to rely on "best form of defence is attack" tactic for a few games until we have properly fit centre half pairing available.

Smalling has been pretty readily available in general (appears so anyway) for Utd until he had concussion I think late last season (cant remember if it was that that ruled him out for a few games just before the visit to Etihad, or another smallish injury). Sounds like Jones has been having back spasms since a pre-season game earlier in the summer
