I think some people have forgotten "the old Fernando Torres". They eulogise as if he was the most perfect, complete striker to ever play football. He did have errors in his game back then, some of which remain: most noticeably the fact that the ball will often bounce up off him or a one-touch pass will go the opposite direction he was intending. He also didn't score every time he touched the ball in the box, as he is expected to at Chelsea.

Tonight he had a couple of great chances blocked (one of which he beat three players on his own), a wide header he maybe should've done better with (though not a nailed-on chance), and the few mis-controls / misplaced passes he has always had. It wasn't a great performance, but it certainly wasn't a bad one. I think the difference between Chelsea and Liverpool for Torres has always been that his team-mates don't look for him every time they have the ball. Ramires, Mata, Lampard, Hazard, Sturridge and Oscar all had shots on goal tonight while Torres was in space.

This isn't to argue he is as good as he was but with the circumstances against him. I'm just saying that it's a different situation now for him, and he's changed a lot both physically and mentally, so it seems unfair to constantly compare the current Torres to the old one... especially since the way people go on about the Liverpool years, they are some unattainable level of God-like play. It'd be much fairer to compare him to a similar style of player currently playing today (Cavani), and see how much better or worse he would do in Torres' place. And Chelsea definitely need another striker, whether it be Cavani, Hulk, Schurrle, Moses or even somebody promoted from the reserves - a long term injury to Torres and they're relying entirely on Sturridge.

142 games, 81 goals. - Liverpool.
70 games, 14 goals. (x2) 140 games, 28 goals. - Them

Pretty sure he was much better at Liverpool, he isn't playing CM. He did have errors, he was still an absolutely **** tonne better it is unbelievable, I know you said it is now a different situation but quite frankly it isn't a lot different, and yes he does seem to have changed mentally quite a bit, and they aren't unattainable levels of play, he did it, with Gerrard and co. whether he will ever get that Chelsea remains to be seen where he realistically should get more chances due to them being a better side most times.
Chelsea teammates always looked for him when he joined, then there was a reason they slowly stopped.

To be fair to Torres he has only started 44 competitive games at Chelsea but even so his record there doesn't justify the pricetag.

Nobody is pretending that while at Liverpool Torres was the best forward the World had ever seen, he was however a genuinely fantastic striker with a very good scoring record.

Torres has been very poor at Chelsea. I'd like to add that it's not 'just' his club form that dropped off, his International form has suffered as a result too (despite receiving the golden boot at Euro 2012)

That depends on the defensive midfielder you're talking about though, they aren't all good in the air.

I think Phil Jones could have helped stop him, he's a fairly big lad. Someone like Khedira would be ideal.

I think this is half of the problem. The squad has been so watered down that you think an entirely unproved CB (who is a terrible midfielder and rightback) would be the man to plan CDM for the *richest* club in the world.

I can only say that fergie has somehow lowered your level of expectation to a point that no other top club would even consider this to be a realistic option.

Wow show me where i said average. He is a step up for our team as he makes the rest of them look like they've never kicked a ball before. However he clearly has less impact than hazard.
