Any thoughts on Chelsea's lack of composure and defensive frailty? I have to say I wasn't able to watch all of the game vs Reading, but:
a) Terry + Cahill isn't a sufficiently balanced CB paring. Terry or Cahill + Luiz or Ivanovic is preferable.

b) Lampard has not yet adapted to playing a more defensively oriented role. He's an intelligent man and an intelligent player, but looked to be out of position quite a lot - often just too far forward and too slow to get back.

c) Mikel is quite good in the holding role, but not great (certainly no comparison with Makelele) and maybe doesn't think fast enough. Mikel's form is not great right now either.

d) Mikel + Lampard in a 'double pivot' isn't a great system. Lampard may yet adapt but I just get the impression he won't ever be happy in this role.

You do know Nick you're the sole reason why we're even talking about Man Utd? As per usual if you weren't here no one would be saying a damn word

We just (embarrasingly) lost the first match of the season and you think mulling it over for 3 days is too much? Not sure if srs...

That you seem to be defending the team, the manager and his squad (and choices) seem to drawing this out even further.

I guess you like flat, turgid, predictable football and poor results and are therefore happy to believe in the 'fergie knows best' school of thought.

not sure if i saw it posted on here or DT, but the phrase:

"Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results"

Quote by Albert Einstein

Welcome to last season. No, this season. Are we doing anything different? Should we be expecting different results?

I think you thinking about football for longer than 3 seconds is too much tbh

I think that we lost the league last year on goal difference and thus losing our first game of the season might have already cost us the number 1 spot.

The times of us duelling vs a low spending arsenal is over. we are now competing with teams with cash to burn.

Losing to a non top 4 club on opening day, who deployed 2 of our rejected midfielders, having had pre season to prepare should not be acceptable. That you arent causing a fuss tells me that you have become complacent and accustomed to lacklustre performances.

Good analysis of our tactics vs Everton here: http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/08/21/ferguson-showcases-a-4-2-1-3-against-everton/

Key point:

The system broke down in the penalty box largely because of a particularly poor display from Rooney, who didn’t look 100% fit and didn’t offer anything like the movement required for a lone striker. Kagawa’s performance was encouraging, but often he looked up and Rooney wasn’t in a position to receive a clever pass. Sometimes he came towards play to get the ball, but there was rarely a reverse run into a striking position, and United ended up playing in front of Everton.

I think we'll see Rooney in Welbeck's position and RvP as the lone striker, he plays that role well.

No, the reason I'm not causing a fuss is because I'm not a total idiot who writes off the entire season based on one result a result that will probably be duplicated by our rivals when they also go away to Everton

Not that I care that it's waffling on (I wouldn't if it was Chelsea, Wigan or any club) - but if this sort of discussion was to be stopped in here (it is still relevant to the thread/match, mostly) - where could it be discussed?

Creating a new thread such as 'Chelsea vs Reading post-match discussion' or whatever specific match would just turn into a giant club thread more so than this, it just seems as if any sort of discussion in depth about a club that rattles on for a few pages isn't allowed.

I do agree quite a lot of it's waffle though, but it's the same posters over and over as we know.

I wouldn't like these threads to be closed as soon as games are completed, but I would like to discuss a result or what effect etc it causes in depth on a team/club (minus said bickering) - should it be in here, or is it a case of creating a new thread each time (which could be considered just creating threads about one club and one result which is just as pants.)

I'm not having a dig or anything at the moderation, I also agree I get fed up of seeing bickering page by page and would much rather read discussion that doesn't turn into 'lol roll eyes.jpg' every time - but what's the main objection, people discussing the Manchester United vs Everton (or any club for that matter) result for a few pages (tiresome for some other clubs fans, I don't mind reading about Liverpool for a few pages, it's interesting) and about why it was lost/whatever in a decent way, or the bickering that goes on?

If it's the latter bickering, can't we just chuck everyone that is unable to have a good discussion without resorting to 'lol you are so wrong roll eyes.jpg' into a big hole and have done with it :(?

Note: None of this may make sense, if not, ignore it. Carry on as normal.

I'm more bothered with the petty squabbling rather than the discussion itself. People need to discuss in a polite manner rather than have sly digs at each other, it doesn't go un-noticed.

Possibly but I think it depends on the opposition, against more physical opposition Terry+Cahill may work, against someone like Suarez then Luiz may be worth considering.
b) Lampard has not yet adapted to playing a more defensively oriented role. He's an intelligent man and an intelligent player, but looked to be out of position quite a lot - often just too far forward and too slow to get back.
As you say he's an intelligent player and IMO he will adapt, 10 years ago under Ranieri he was playing a deeper role at times too and don't be fooled he can tackle when he needs to. I'm one of the few that believed he can play in the same team as Gerrard given enough practice i.e. if SG had gone to Chelsea they could have made it work IMO.
c) Mikel is quite good in the holding role, but not great (certainly no comparison with Makelele) and maybe doesn't think fast enough. Mikel's form is not great right now either.
Completely agree I think Mikel is overrated and it is a shame Essien went off the boil after his injuries. IMO he is(was)( better than Mikel as a DM even though it isn't necessarily his best position.
d) Mikel + Lampard in a 'double pivot' isn't a great system. Lampard may yet adapt but I just get the impression he won't ever be happy in this role.
Possibly but I think Lampard is at the stage of his career where he won't play every game and indeed after getting benched quite a bit under AVB he may take the view that he is happy to get in the team especially after the arrivals of Hazard, Oscar, Marin and Moses.

I actually took Nick off ignore (dont ask me why) and ever since it seems he knows and well he's been worse than ever :p

Hazard was a breath of fresh air yesterday and it's not until you see him in the flesh that you appreciate the work he does without the ball as well as with it.
He's just what Chelsea have been crying out for for ages, someone who always wants the ball, has amazingly quick feet and an incredible burst of pace and can actually take on a packed defence which is where we've struggled massively in the past.
Oscar got a bit of a shock when he came on, I don't think he's used to having so little time on the ball and got caught out once or twice but I think he';s got the ability to adapt.
Good see see Torres scoring again too(offside as it was) I heard something yesterday along the lines of he's got 15 in his last 17 starts, that might be beer blurred though.
