Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [17th - 22nd December 2011]

Nope, Chelsea were just as average(for a top 4 team) for the best part of the last 5 years as well :p

People are daft, really daft, Sturridge is excellent, but because he had ONE game where he missed a bunch of chances all of a sudden everyones saying he can't hit a barn door, he still scored in that game IIRC.

People miss chances, the best strikers in the world miss chances, Messi misses a crapload and Ronaldo misses a ridiculous amount(he shoots more from range than probably anyone else in the world, certainly anyone else who scores 30+ a season), and they will both have games where all these misses come along at once.

I'd take a Sturridge who isn't scared to shoot over a player who rarely misses, but won't shoot very often and that in itself will cost us more games.

Cole and Bosingwa have been poor this year, ignoring the high line Cole has made so many individual error's, poor passing being caught upfield. These days people over analyse simple things that cause bad results, a lot of Chelsea's worst games haven't been tactically great, nor inept, just some very poor individual performances. Cole for a decade basically hasn't had an issue getting right up to deliver a cross and getting back to make a good tackle in his own box from the counter attack, this year he's getting caught a lot more, a high line isn't going to make a huge difference to Cole.

Drogba has blown hot and cold, but can you blame him, best striker in the EPL the year before, great start to last season, gets sick, has an off spell and suddenly finds himself out of the team for Torres starting and with a different formation every week trying to get Torres working? Drogba for almost a year hasn't been really out and out first team, he hasn't known(till maybe the last 4-5 games) that he'd be starting, the team has been playing worse, partially down to the constant changes.

Chelsea need a set starting 11 and some games to get used to playing together and more depth, as Gustov said, Mikel/Malouda and Kalou are essentially gash. They have no backup to Lampard, no backup(that isn't painfully and stupidly out of form) upfront, no backup on the wings and very little back up in defence. With Alex being told to do one and Luiz a seeming crackpot defensively they've got very little backup also.

I'm sure Harry will effectively stick to his team in the second half versus Chelsea:

------ Gallas Kaboul ----
Walker Parker Sandro BAE
----- VdV --- Modric ---
------- Ade Pav -------

I'd personally prefer to see Rose or Pienaar give us some proper width but I doubt that will happen.

I'll be at the game too!

Townsend has been playing, and is a natural winger. Pienaar has just about managed 90 minutes since injury.

Pienaar is a good squad player for if we need a central player but putting him on the wing would be stupid.

Sturridge's final ball was shocking against us at OT as well. I'm not sure about him tbh, he looked good at Bolton last season so maybe that's his level or maybe he just needs to be playing in a Chelsea side full of confidence to see the best of him. Maybe playing wide doesn't suite him? IIRC when he signed for Bolton they pushed Elmander out wide and Sturridge played centrally with Davies....

Based on what I've seen this season (and DM will love this) I don't think Sturridge is as good as Welbeck (albeit there's not a lot in it) but that may be because of the reasons above. Will be interesting to see which of the two go to the Euro's in the summer (if either go at all)

Interesting...

For the record it may well be my Man Utd tinted glasses that's clouding my judgement on this. I certainly don't feel that strongly about it either way though :p

One for the spurs fans, a brilliant video that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, It really is about playing attractive football, And being 24 I started supporting spurs because my dad talked on and on about the beautiful football....and I never got to see it! Instead I had to deal with years of dross and take stick from mates who supported the big teams, every now and then we would get a win and id look like a *** because id go on and on about one victory.

But now we are playing great stuff and winning! Showing some back bone for the first time in my lifetime! The champions league was great and I was lucky enough to be at the lane for one of those games, It was electric. Lets hope we can keep the pace going this year and bring the glory glory night back to the lane or heaven forbid a new ground.

Cheeky edit as video wont seem to enbed for me :(

TEAM - Friedel; Walker, Gallas, King, Assou-Ekotto; Modric, Parker, Sandro, Bale; Van der Vaart, Adebayor.
SUBS - Gomes, Bassong, Kaboul, Rose, Kranjcar, Livermore, Pavlyuchenko.

We are going to be playing rather lop sided I fear unless walker can run up and down the pitch for 90 minutes solid with sandro dropping to right back as cover

Given the same results, I'd take a technically better player, Sturridge gets results, he shoots a lot and he puts in balls. Sturridge is FAR more effective than Welbeck. Welbeck shone in ONLY a Utd team playing excellently and his link up player is made to look better by other players doing well, when Utd weren't playing well, Welbeck looked like a pile of crap, Sturridge in a team playing worse looked more effective.

I've been saying it for years now, just shooting, even bad shots, creates trouble, it creates defenders who are worried and rush out to block shots, it creates space all over the place as defenders can't predict where you will shoot from, a bad shot can be dropped by a keeper and become a tap in for others.

Nani looks at his best when he does a bit of everything, and so do Utd, that's sometimes crossing, sometimes running at the defence, sometimes shooting at the end of a run and sometimes shooting from range.

Welbeck is a bit, meh, he doesn't look remotely dangerous from range, he doesn't really go around people.

Sturridge can when his team is playing badly, get a goal all on his own and put pressure on the defence and bring his team into a game, for me Welbeck can't do that at all.

I don't think it's a bad Chelsea side, I just think it looks stale for me, bar Mata and Sturridge.
