Seems a fair punishment to me. Yes, it may seem over the top from the FA when other punishments are considered, but they are hilariously inconsistent.

Indeed, it's the same with Joey Barton, he never learnt so they hit him harder everytime.

They did? He got a 12 game ban for 3 counts of violent conduct which even before you get to his past indiscretions, was less than the FA's own rules said he should have received for that incident on it's own.

IINM he'd already been sent off or given a 3 game ban that season for an incident prior to the City game which meant his red vs City would have been a 4 game ban on it's own. The knee on Aguero and headbutt on Kompany should have resulted in a further 5 and then 6 game ban (you get an additional game ban for every red within the same season), meaning he should have been banned for 15 games in total.
Of those 6 matches, at least 1 is likely to be in the league cup given they are unlikely to qualify for Europe. So in terms of meaningful games, in reality he will only miss five matches.

IINM there'd be 1 League Cup game if we're in Europe and 2 if not.

The irony is that we were in with a chance of qualifying via the fair play league. I doubt that's the case now though.
I don't think they will appeal tbh, too risky.

I also don't think they helped themselves by coming out and saying that any more than 3 matches would be harsh.

I don't think we simply came out and said we disagreed with the longer ban - we were responding to the FA's charge.

I'm not sure that the FA would increase his ban if we appealed either. Due to the size of the ban I think there's a very fair (whether they win it or not) argument that it's excessive and therefore not a frivolous appeal. That said, unless we were very confident that we'd have the ban reduced, I can't see us appealing due to the reasons HangTime mentioned. Delaying the ban only means that he'll miss more games of next season.

From what I read it was Suarez that accepted the charge but thought the 3 match ban was sufficient. imo that's Suarez deciding his own fate before a decision has been made, I don't think that helped his case.

They have increased bans before if people have appealed, I wouldn't be surprised if they did here. It only seems to be Liverpool fans and people attached to the club that thinks it's harsh. Everyone on the outside seems to agree it was correct.

He didn't try to decide his own fate. He/the club challenged the view that it was worth more than a 3 game ban rather than simply accepting whatever was thrown at him.

I know they have increased bans before but they've generally been for stupid appeals where there's no argument to be made in defense of the player. And everyone on the outside seems to think it's correct? A lot of Chelsea and Utd fans seem to think that. Nearly every journo I follow on twitter has said it's extremely harsh.
Liverpool should get rid.

Why?

As a Utd(?) fan, what's your reasoning for Liverpool selling Suarez? He can join another club and carry on doing the same things, just not at Liverpool?

I really don't understand non Liverpool supporters saying we should sell him. They clearly don't have Liverpool's interests at heart and seemingly don't care whether Suarez learns his lesson and changes but Liverpool should sell him

Honestly, I think the punishment is on the light side - I would have banned him for an entire season - but I'm glad to see the FA treating it was suitable seriousness. This is, after all, a man who has previously been banned for 7 games for biting and yet still did again. Giving him any less than a 7 match ban would have been entirely pointless.

to follow the excellent examples they set re Cantona and Ferdinand :p

If I remember right, we banned Cantona for 4 moths and then the FA doubled it.

Getting rid of Suarez would be nothing to do with him being a valuable asset, it's because Liverpool would be even more ordinary than they already are ;)

The only reason why Liverpool may be better off selling Suarez is because he keeps attracting the wrong headlines for Liverpool, you said it yourself Baz even after the season he's had he is never going to win POTY because of who he is so even when he's doing the right things it'll be ignored

Only you Liverpool fans can answer whether the negative headlines are worth the pay off of having a very good player in your side...

Quantify the damage that these negative headlines do to the club. We signed a record kit deal on the back of the racism incident and it was reported that Warrior have already agreed a deal with Suarez personally once his Adidas deal expires too.

Of course it would be better if he didn't get involved in so much **** but this talk about the damage he does to the club is beyond exaggerated and the positive publicity he brings through his performances on the pitch (regardless of the improved results on the pitch from having him) far outweigh the negatives.

Do you think the likes of Phil Neville attract more supporters, sponsors etc than Suarez does?

Cantona deserved a medal for kicking the filthy racist bigot Simmons not a ban :p

I think this can quick turn into a Utd vs Liverpool argument as Suarez will quickly polarise fans but as ATPBX said, just because other punishments have been lenient doesn't mean that Suarezs is excessive in isolation. The argument of precedence is a little weak.

I guess the test would be, if it was Rooney who bit another player, would we get Liverpool fans crowing that a 10 game ban is excessive. ?

I think we all know the answer to that

Longest bans handed out by the FA......

9 months - Manchester United's Eric Cantona for his 'kung-fu' style kick
9 months - Chelsea keeper Mark Bosnich who tested positive for cocaine
8 months - Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United for missing a drugs test
12 games - Joey Barton QPR fighting v Man City
11 games - Sheffield Wednesday's Paolo di Canio for pushing over referee Paul Alcock
10 games - Former Southampton player David Prutton for shoving referee Alan Wiley
9 games - Paul Davis of Arsenal for punching Southampton's Glenn Cockeril
8 games - Liverpool's Luis Suarez for racially abusing Patrice Evra
5 weeks - Man United's Roy Keane for comments made in his autobiography

Note that the other similar assault on another player (a punch) only got 9 games.

Definitely a conspiracy against Liverpool.

Joke, barely touched him.

Personally I would have thought any record revenue deals are being completed in spite of Suarez not because of him, I mean he doesn't really have the face to sell shirts does he and couple that with him having been found guilty of racism and now this he's hardly a sponsors dream :/

That's just me surmising though, you obviously know more about your kit deals and what not and the reason for them materialising more than me :)
