Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [19 - 23rd January 2013]

That's the great thing about Bale - teams send two or three players to mark him, leaving space for teammates like Lennon. Bale doesn't have to do anything spectacular to have a big influence on a game.

Trouble is he then comes inside and restricts said space. "He plays on the left" He is not Ronaldo. He should stay to being a fantastic winger.

I love how DM quotes what I said, has a rant about something else entirely and still ends up being completely wrong :o

Carrick did well up against him but I still had my heart in mouth every time Lennon isolated him in the box.

lennon had a good game but his tactics are so easy to read yet it still works 9 times out of 10. drive him to the line, he'll create space for himself by pulling back on his left, then switch to his right and get a cross in. it's so easy to predict but it works.

if bale stuck to a simple plan like this, he'd be far more effective. still, there'd be no one getting on the end of a cross anyway :o

Thirteen assists overall that year.

Edit :: presumably the 'creating a goal scoring opportunity' stat != an assist, like when the 'creating goal scoring opportunities' stats used to be wheeled out re: Modric.

Yeah I gathered that, thanks for posting. Safe to say stats haven't translated into performances for him yet but hopefully he can get his career back on track.

Agreed, players like Lennon and Valencia (when he's not being a tard) show there is still plenty of mileage in being a proper winger. Bale is too one-footed to play the Ronaldo role, but defenders knowing that he is at least prepared to cut inside will open space for him on his preferred foot. Cutting inside should be an occasional option, not his first choice.

The reason why Lennon and Bale work so nicely is because if you completely nullify Bale (as Man Utd did), the defensive team is lopsided from having to commit 2 players to Bale. This leaves room for Lennon on the right. We have got much better this season at using this advantage i.e. we get Lennon the ball quicker after Bale has committed some defensive players and Lennon is making better decisions as to how to exploit that advantage.

Edit- just noticed Tunny wrote this above.

Not a single mention of Nigel Adkins in the match programme tonight...

New manager now being interviewed with his 'interpreter'... :p

Not putting away some golden opportunities here, should be 2 or 3 ahead but I suspect as is so often the case, our failure to convert now during our dominance will be punished late in the game.
