It's been a sad running joke for a long time to be honest.
The last time I can remember being optimistic was when we were promoted back to the EPL under Hughton and that first season back in the top flight. Even then it wasn't all peachy.
No one really wanted Pardew in the first place and while we did well in that first season under him, many people felt that it was still Hughton's team.
We also knew that the squad wasn't deep enough to cope with the stresses of the Europa League and that was before the sell-off of our best players.
All of these issues ultimately come back to Mike Ashley and I think a lot of the 'Pardew out' Sentiment was miss-directed.
Our performance since he left is testament to how much he was actually doing.
Now, DM will remind us all that without Ashley we probably wouldn't be around any longer and he's got a point to a degree. However, I'm still of the belief that our current positive financial situation could have been achieved without some of the decisions that have been made.
The sad fact is, by demolishing the squad for short-term financial gain, we're going to either be relegated or languish at the bottom of the league with more and more fans becoming disillusioned.
Eventually it will become a perpetual cycle of poor results leading to a lack of funds and so on.
I didn't want McCLaren but I'm willing to give him some time to try and turn it around. At this rate it will be a miracle if we stay up…
