Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [19th May 2013]

8mil Chamakh, 14mil Gervinho, around 10mil on Podolski, 12mil on Giroud... the funny thing being, we could have just spent that all on one top notch player and been exactly where we are now. Arsenal won't address any of our weaknesses, Wenger will continue to overspend on crap players but think he's buying better quality because they cost more than a 5mil player he would usually buy. The difference is, he use to find under rated, under valued, top notch players and pay 5mil, now he's paying 2-3 times as much for guys who aren't undervalued or unknown.

Chelsea have already improved, Hazard in his first season almost matched Mata for goals/assists, and from what I can recall a huge number of Mata's assists and some goals have come via him being the freekick taker. Hazard will be better next year, as will Oscar, frankly I'd expect them to be very very strong next year, they strengthened but needed a bit of time to gel their attacking midfield players together, next year they'll add a striker who knows where the goal is. Spurs/Arsenal to fight it out, somehow I just don't see Liverpool being competitive, there isn't any reason their shouldn't be, their wage spend is insane for the squad size and some of that quality.

I think next year is Rodgers last chance, he needs two CB's, a LB, a winger and maybe a striker, if he buys well they could compete, if he doesn't they won't.

Bale's involvement is somewhat being over stated, sure he's scoring a lot, but someone kind of always does, thats just football. Last year Adebayor scored loads and assisted loads, other years other players do. If Bale doesn't play, someone else will and they'll get goals, Bale takes less shots, someone else will take more. If they sell Bale(which I'm not convinced of) they'll buy a striker and likely a winger also and they'll be looking for goal scoring ones.

Infact, I think if they sold Bale I can see Michu being made an offer Swansea can't refuse(we'll see if he can), maybe Benteke(but he says he's staying, again we'll see), while Villa is almost certainly a no go. This is a guy who is on 150k a week or more currently, is already WAY outside their wage structure and will be getting offers of 200k+ a week from Chinese, Qatar-(-ese, -ian?), Turkish, American clubs, and he would likely get offers from some bigger German clubs that can afford higher wages. I'd be very surprised if he came to the EPL and went to Spurs on significantly less than he's on now.

Look at Arsenal, RVP left, most people assumed we'd score less, same with Henry, and same with every other club losing a big scorer... yet the next seasons almost every time the team stays at the same level and goals get spread around or just one player has a huge season.

I think it's going to be hard for Chelsea to get up for the Everton game now and wouldn't be surprised if we drop points. Had we definitely needed to win it then I think we would've but with Hazard out again and the rest of the squad looking physically drained it's going to be tough.
So I reckon Spuds will miss out on goal difference this time, that's going to hurt :p

I disagree. No way did Berbatov and Modric have the same effect when they weren't in the Spurs team than when Bale doesn't play.

I disagree. Both of the two players mentioned had a big impact on the team, especially Modric. His impact was more subtle than Bale's (i.e. it wasn't last minute long range goals) but just as important.

I think you have a good squad but not good enough consistently for top four. The likes of Huddlestone, Dempsey, Holtby, Caulker, Townsend, Parker, Essou Okotto wouldn't get in Man U, City's, Chelsea or Arsenal's side.

How many of those players get in Spurs' first team? :p Huddlestone has played a handful of games, Holtby is still settling in, Caulker is 4th or 5th choice CB, Townsend was out on loan all season, Parker is understudy to Sandro and Vertoghen has been favoured at LB over Essou-Ekkoto for the big games.

I don't think they're going to get any better and not much in terms of youth is coming through other than Rose.

How many youth players come through at any of the big clubs apart from Arsenal? Spurs have a few (Carroll, Ceballos) but they're not going to get many first team chances.

What are the results needed for a 3rd place play off game?
Chelsea draw 1-1 and Arsenal win 2-1 I think :D

Nope Chelsea to draw 0-0 and Arsenal to beat Newcastle 2-1 iirc for the 3rd place playoff....i just hope it doesnt happen, the 3rd place playoff....last thing both teams need is another game or 2 as they might do it over 2 legs :/

i think BAE is off in the summer. parker, huddlestone maybe dempsey may depart too. not sure what willl happen with manu.

spurs' biggest disadvantage is the stadium gate. we could be getting atleast 55k to watch every home game if we had a new stadium.

Dempsey won't unless AVB goes, AVB was only just saying how important he was, his drive, athleticism, he never stops and he's scored and assisted crucial goals throughout the season. He's been vastly under rated and ignored that he had no preseason, is playing with a new team and a different role. He'll likely stay and score/assist more next year.

He has 7 goals in 66 shots, he had 17 goals last year in 146 shots, only slightly different, and effectively Bale is playing more the role Dempsey was last year, where most of the shots and chances fell to him.

I think Dempsey will improve simply having a season under him and a proper preseason, if Bale does go, Dempsey will likely get used closer to how he was at Fulham, getting upfront more, particularly if Adebayor continues to suck most of the time.

pretty much every goal dempsey has scored has been crucial and in that respect he was very good value for money. he is often a passenger but you have summed up very well why this is the case.

good squad player, i wouldn't mind if he stayed at all.

SKY SOURCES: Newcastle owner Mike Ashley to pay non-football staff £1m bonus if team beats Arsenal tomorrow #SSN

Sorry Arsenal, no Champions League next season.

EDIT: Would prefer refunds all around what with some of the football we've had to endure this season.

Thanks :)

Considering how much you get extra from each position, and considering how freaking tight the bottom of the table is, a win could be worth quite a bit more than 1mil, if they win and the three above them don't, they can get 1.5mil at least(it was half a mil per position a couple years ago, probably more now) but more importantly if they lost and everyone below them won, they could lose 4 places and at least 2mil, so there is maybe 3.5mil + riding on this game... so Spurs backhander, doubt it. They can finish, quite laughably, top half of the table, or 4th bottom depending on the games tomorrow.

well AVB and pardew were seen in london together!

it's easy to forget spurs need to beat sunderland, that's not a foregone conclusion.

I really hope Pardew plays a strong squad today. Not so much about preventing Arsenal from going 3rd, but we have a change of getting to at least a half decent finish if we win. Team of kids = excuse to lose on the final day of the season :S

i feel he may stay too but only on the premise levy spends and on the condition he can leave if we don't get cl. he likes AVB, and he gets on well with bale and bale is in his best form so far and the fans love him.

berbatov left, spurs were set up to fail, modric left, spurs were set up to fail. even if bale does leave, we still have a good squad to build on.

at 23, it would be in bale's interest to stay too. i can't see him going to another pl club so one more years pl experience will do him good.

Problem with saying that, is that Berbatov was garbage and Modric simply wasn't as influential as Spurs fans thought he was and was easily replaceable.

Bale on the other hand is actually a highly effective player and single handedly influences games to a level way above any thing Berbatov and Modric did combined.
