Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [20th - 24th April 2012]

If Chelsea and City massively under perform then yes.

Lol.

We could play at our best and beat either team without them under performing, perhaps Pool have been rubbish this season but we haven't ;)

They are tough games where they are the favourites but it's still the sadly typical attitude that we are lucky and don't deserve to be where we are, neither are true.

Newcastle fans thinking they will boss CL, look at City/Utd both went out in the group stages. Chelsea only just got through

No one same thinks we will "boss" anything. But we will go in with a good team and a good attitude able to beat anyone. We won't go in like the Manchester teams this year who thought by turning up they would automatically qualify for the later rounds.

Yeah because fergie goes into games with that attitude. Pardew is a **** manager just look at his past. You have got lucky in a way as all the signings have performed immensely and I really doubt most of them were scouted by pardew himself. Spurs will finish 4th.

Its the same old **** coming from people since November.

If we do get champions league we will need around 70 points and that no different to any other team in past years??

But noooo its because other teams are under preforming and thats the reason why Newcastle are there. Never mind we picked up 62 points this season with 4 games to go.

Not bad for a team that was tipped by a lot of people in here and in the papers to go down huh ^^

Anyhows depending on which Europe we get Pardew has said we got all are summer targets lined up and spoken to already (up to 6)? Which all have said they will come depending on what we get^^

He clearly isn't a **** manager though is he. Silly jealous mackem.

I hope Newcastle can hang on, although I do think they probably won't get through the qualifier. I do love how fans are now saying how Ashley has turned the club around and how he did a god job of shifting players for money at the right time.

Back as a local hero again :D

I do think it will turn into a one season wonder, they have done fantastically well but I think they will lose a player or two after getting knocked out the champions league, if not before. I think Pardew has been very lucky that what was left has gelled very well. He never really showed much managerial class to the point the fans didn't want him either.

Still I hope they hang on and Savage has to buy that Newcastle taxi driver a new taxi :D

It's just the green eyed monster and it's getting rather sad now.

The majority of Newcastle fans, the players, the management have all been extremely grounded and realistic throughout the whole season that the planning and prep they have put in is hearing fruit. The level of work the club has put in is so out of the norm rather than people accepting it as a job well don't they cannot grasp this and instead label is luck.

It's sad but what can you do. Yes it will be hard to replicate next year because the clubs around us will go out and distort reality (monetarily) to make this happen.

People attitudes have irritated me so much I now really hope we do finish fourth so we can ram the bitterness down everyone's throats and have a great laugh at the big spenders who can't keep ahead of a "little" club like ours.

Thats what the chief scout is for!!!(typical SMB no clue what so ever), its already been said by graham Carr(chief scout) he scouts all of the transfer targets comes back and then discusses with the chairman, pardew and chief executive which players will be the best for the team(he does between 5-10 games a week)im sure that's a better way to do transfers than to just take an agents word for it

+1 to that, remember we havnt played anyone yet and our bubble will burst soon!!!

Why, why do people make such daft proclaimations, do you know how **** the vast majority of teams who go into champions league qualification are? Spurs vs Young boys, yeah a funny fluke first leg, and they thrashed them silly the second leg.

Almost everyone in the premier league could get through the first round of CL qualification because you'll be playing the, I dunno, basically a team that is no where near the level of the premier league. THe champions league is not even remotely close to all top 4 EPL/La Liga/Serie A/Bunda's quality, 1/10th of the competition is teams that high quality, the rest are a mix between mid table premiership and championship sides, and below that.

Its still a knock out competition and that means sometimes Utd would lose to someone the equivilent of a league 1 team, thats life, Newcastle would almost certainly be favourites to go through to the group stages unless they got a very very VERY unlucky second qualification draw, even then, the top quality teams they can face are likely to be teams Newcastle are thoroughly capable of beating.

Just about any team that ever makes the top 4 on the EPL will be capable of also getting past the group stage of the champs league.... see Spurs/Leed's for proof.

Qualifaction teams are by and large, awful and vastly inferior to top 8 EPL teams, half the teams in the group stage will also be below top 8 EPL quality. You might get unlucky like City did and get a particular tough group, most English teams really only get one "top" team in their group, and therefore almost always progress to the knock out stages.

If Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, Newcastle get 4th spot, they'll be massive favourites to reach the group stage, and it would take a very unlucky draw to make them anything but a good bet to get to the first knock out stage.

Hell, look at the teams below them, I'd put money on the current poo Liverpool side, Everton, Fulham and heck, maybe even Sunderland to all get to the group stage pretty easily.

Look at Stoke and Birmingham ffs, Europa league is filled with teams that get into the champs league regularly and both did particularly well, as have Fulham and others.

European football ISN'T some massive step up in quality from EPL reaching the later stages, IE quarters and beyond weeds out almost all the **** teams and it usually takes a top team to reach them, group stages..... some utterly awful teams reach the group stages.

I love how everyone thinks they know what Newcastle fans are thinking.

There's nothing like a stereotype is there?!

Ashley is far from a local hero – he's made some sensible financial decisions which have seen the club get back in the black (or at least is only in debt to him).

I don't think any fan will argue this is a bad thing and we owe him a lot for his business acumen, even if it's not matched by his football acumen.

It's very hard to forget the farcical circus which surround St. James Park the season we were relegated or the way Hughton was treated after such a successful season to get us back in the EPL, or the controversy surrounding the name of the stadium. (I would rather have Sports Direct as a shirt sponsor than a stadium sponsor but I appreciate that means 'Sports Direct' doesn't get mentioned when ever a commentator refers to the ground.)

Pardew was lucky that he inherited an excellent team from Hughton last season; the team spirit and self belief was bonded from our season in the Championship. However, he's done a great job in his own right since then.

I said a few weeks ago that I thought the squad wasn't deep enough to repeat the success in the EPL next season AND perform well in the CL or Europa League. However, if there are six signings waiting in the wings it might address that issue somewhat.

The vast majority of Newcastle fans are sensible and realistic: no one expects us to be challenging United and City next season for the title; no one expects us to be challenging Barcellona in the final of the CL next year.

Saying that, I doubt any sensible Newcastle fan expected us to be mixing it up with the top 6 this season – I was fully prepared for a mid-table scrap.

I think there's a lot of hate for Newcastle and Newcastle fans, especially after our good run of form around the 96 season and the 'I'd love it' fiasco. It must have made most of the rest of the country extatic when we were relegated ans I think that's why a lot of people can't accept that we're starting to do well again.

It's either luck or down to our rivals under performing; it's clearly got nothing to do with our own hard work and ability.

You can only play the games that are put in from of you. We've done that this season with (unexpected) success and I see no reason why we won't continue to do so next season in the EPL and some form of European football unless some sort of catastrophic melt down occurs.

Even if we don't qualify for the CL from 4th, or we don't get through to the knock-out stages of the Europa, we deserve that 4th or 5th spot because we've earned it.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people ready to gloat if we fail and make excuses if we succeed. :)

We want the "top" clubs to keep doing this. Let them waste time and money on Adebayor, Saha and the rest and we will sign the good players.

I think I'm going to have to stop talking in this thread because the bitterness is astounding and i'll end up with a holiday at this rate. Hopefully we'll get fourth (which we are not favourites to do) but regardless we have a great season.

HAWAY TGE LADS!!

All clubs get negative comments made about them on here and in the media(Apart from Barca and Swansea who get adored by everybody..) maybe you should rise above them and enjoy the football that Newcaslte are playing rather than whining? The media have called Norwich a long ball team and say we are lucky, I don't care, I'm too busy enjoying being midtable in the premier league to care about what they say..

I'm still undecided about Pardew, I heard a lot of negative talk from his past managerial experiences calling him a poor manager however he has done a very good job at Newcastle. He now needs to prove he isn't a one hit wonder and do a similar job next season(as Lambert and Rodgers also need to).

I do hope Newcastle get 4th, at their best they have not been as good as Spurs(imo) however they have played consistently all season and have shown that a low budget team with good team spirit is better than teams full of overpaid world class players who lack desire(Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool)

It just gets irritating when you hear it again and again :p

The most surprising thing is the clubs who have been the bitterest i.e. I would have expected it to be Sunderland :p but it has just been the clubs we have outperformed (and strangely most ManU fans too) whereas other clubs who are up there newly (Citeh) or are up there also trying to be sensible (Arsenal) have generally been the more realisitic and decent fans.

But ho hum as you suggest I will chill, not worth a holiday :)

Two final points though;

I'm sure there will be plenty of people ready to gloat if we fail and make excuses if we succeed. :)

This is true. If we fail to make fourth and Spurs/Chelski get it I am sure they will make out (amongst others) that we have somehow failed. You can almost hear the held breaths waiting for us to slip up.

Newcastle fans can hardly moan about other people being pessimistic about their chances... at the start of the season Newcastle fans themselves were crying about how Mike Ashley was killing the club/selling the good players/not spending enough/etc! :p

(I always said Newcastle were doing the right thing, I hasten to add... ;))

I agree with this, that was me too :)

I still have no love for Cashley but I have masses of respect for the job he has done.

However there is a difference betweem pessimission (spl? having a brain meltdown :p) and being bitter/jealous which a lot of people are coming across as.

Actually make that three points;

Regardless of what happens over a hard run in we have had a magnificent season and well done to the lads!

Signing out now! :D

lol you really are on your high horse. do you know what we paid in fee's for manu and saha?

also, what's your wage bill and capacity compared to spurs? you're not a small club, you're a big club who has massively underachieved over the past few years.

You're not a small club, you're a big club who has massively underachieved over the past few years.

Make your mind up! (Not you personally cm.)

When it suits we're a small club because we haven't won anything for x years, then when your argument requires it, we ARE a big club that hasn't met expectations.

I'd go with the second of those two personally but you can't have it both ways. :p

you're a big club, no question

For 2010/11,

Tottenham revenues = €181m
Newcastle revenues = €98m

---

In the year to June 2010 (so the previous year to that) Spurs' wage bill was £67m, for 2010/11 it was £91m

The same figures for Newcastle are £47.5m for 2009/10, and £53.6m for 2010/11.

---

So, what's your point? They have a larger stadium, but have far smaller revenues and far lower wages. And?

err weren't we in a different league to them then?

Thanks cm, I'm going to roll this quote out at every possible opportunity. :D

how can you not class yourself as a big club?

who's your closest other prem club, sunderland?

big capacity, and a history of decent success.

i remember the days of cole, fox and asprilla, shearer etc and i'm sure you have had other periods like that in previous decades you've just been underachieving for a long time, this was proven when you got relegated.
