Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [20th - 24th April 2012]

However there is a difference betweem pessimission (spl? having a brain meltdown :p) and being bitter/jealous which a lot of people are coming across as.

Pessimism. Unless you're on a mission to be pessimistic? In which case you've invented a whole new word to describe this state of affairs. :D

Make your mind up! (Not you personally cm.)

When it suits we're a small club because we haven't won anything for x years, then when your argument requires it, we ARE a big club that hasn't met expectations.

I'd go with the second of those two personally but you can't have it both ways. :p

I think it's normally different people arguing that Newcastle are a big/small club and I suppose it just depends on your viewpoint which it is.

Personally if I was a Newcastle fan I'd not be taking any negative comments too much to heart, you've had a pretty fantastic season so far and certainly in comparison to most of the past decade or so and I'd be enjoying that far more than worrying about what other people think. Looking to the future you've got some good players so if you can keep it together there's no reason why you shouldn't have a decent season again next year although whether 4th will be a realistic option again might be in slightly more doubt.

Because your revenues are 185% of what Newcastle's are. Then your wages are 170% of what Newcastle's are. You can't seriously expect Newcastle to do better than Tottenham, when there's such a disparity in finances...

where have i said i expect newcastle to do better than tottenham?

and by that argument, am i not expected to think tottenham can do better than liverpool?

how can you not class yourself as a big club?

who's your closest other prem club, sunderland?

big capacity, and a history of decent success.

i remember the days of cole, fox and asprilla, shearer etc and i'm sure you have had other periods like that in previous decades you've just been underachieving for a long time, this was proven when you got relegated.

Of course I class Newcastle as a big club – it's everyone else that suggests we're not. Just look at Tom84's comments in this thread.

It's nice to hear from someone who isn't a Newcastle fan that they consider us a big club that's underachieved, rather than a small club. :)

Not feeling at all confident about today for some reason, but we should beat Everton.

I can't see City losing to Wolves either. Fingers crossed though!

As for this whole Newcastle discussion, I think they've done fantastically well and totally deserve their position.

You seem to be equating historic 'size' with how they should perform in the now, which is just crazy.

Well, Liverpool's wages are higher than Tottenham's (in 2009/10 they were £114m). If all three of the clubs were run the same, I'd expect it to be Liverpool > Tottenham > Tottenham. However, Liverpool have obviously been run atrociously, Tottenham have been run poorly, an Newcastle have been run fantastically well.

How would you order your expectations?

i'm a spurs fan, i have no expectations

it's gone **** up as i knew it would, infact, it lasted a little longer than i thought it would but it's still there to be had and is not totally out of our reach. with the players we have, we should be top 4 but with the way they've performed over the past 2 months, we quite frankly don't deserve it.

we should've invested seriously in january if we thought we could go the distance and we didn't. couple that with the ridiculous capello situation and it's easy to see why it's gone wrong.

What a grim looking line up! :(

Man Utd: De Gea, Rafael Da Silva, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Valencia, Scholes, Carrick, Nani, Rooney, Welbeck.

Subs: Amos, Jones, Giggs, Smalling, Park, Hernandez, Young.

Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Neville, Osman, Heitinga, Gibson, Pienaar, Fellaini, Jelavic.

Subs: Mucha, Stracqualursi, McFadden, Cahill, Gueye, Barkley, Anichebe.

Floppy chops Harry on bbc this morning
Running the marathon, sprinted the first few miles then pulled up completely ****ed and couldn't finish it off

I'm sure he'll give himself a motivational speech and transfer in a second hand, but still in half decent nick, hip to help him finish :p

Lol.

We could play at our best and beat either team without them under performing, perhaps Pool have been rubbish this season but we haven't ;)

They are tough games where they are the favourites but it's still the sadly typical attitude that we are lucky and don't deserve to be where we are, neither are true.

No one same thinks we will "boss" anything. But we will go in with a good team and a good attitude able to beat anyone. We won't go in like the Manchester teams this year who thought by turning up they would automatically qualify for the later rounds.

Nothing to do with luck, you deserve to be where you are at the moment, but many if the teams around you have better players and should be finishing above you but you've performed well and consistently, they haven't.

In a one off match both teams playing at their best, Chelsea/Arsenal /United/City and us IMO would beat you.

I'd rather you get fourth than the others, just pray Chelsea lose in CL :p

Are you joking?

Exhibit A - I'm demonstrated you spend far more per year on wages. Your wages being 170% of what Newcastle's are.

Exhibit B - from 2006-2011, Tottenham have had a net transfer spend, per year, of £13.34m (so, in total, a £66.7m LOSS). In the same period Newcastle have had a net transfer profit, per year, of £3.87m (so, in total, a £19.35m PROFIT).

I rest my case.

just what is your obsession with this?

who have spurs signed this season and who have newcastle signed this season? you can't go on about me comparing the newcastle of old and then not concentrate purely on this season as this season is all that matters right now?

newcastle have invested well, spurs have not when we should have done.

I'm not obsessed, you're just in denial!

I'm not comparing new and old :o. You can't sign £1bn of players in one year, then complain about a team outspending you the next, when they spend £5 and you spend nothing...

Five years is a completely reasonable time window to look at, in terms of transfers. The wages issue is certainly absolutely in the now, though.

*sigh*

when was the last time newcastle finished above spurs in the league?

And you're attributing the difference, this season, to a lack of investment... which is laughable.

I understand what you are saying there but also disagree about the lack of investment not being a factor, the reason is under sir bobby in 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 we finished 4th and 3rd respectively at the end of the2003 season we only signed lee bowyer on a free transfer and didn't invest any more money in players where as other teams did and closed the gap and in 2003/2004 we finished 5th because of that and sir bobby was sacked and that's when our downward spiral stated
