Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [21st - 26th October 2011]

Surely the defence is your biggest problem? You're leaking goals left, right and centre and a solid defence is what you've built your title winning teams around in the past. Ferdinand and Evra need replacing before any midfielders imo.

Defensively Evra is the elephant in the room all of a sudden. In terms of players we have a lot of top quality guys to choose from in defence but the blend isnt right yet. With every one fit Evans shouldnt be a first choice player. I say that regardless of todays red card and i actually rate him higher than some do.

I agree that the defence has been poor this season, but I think that's due to Vidic being injured and Fergie constantly changing the defence. The problem with the central midfield is that the quality doesn't exist in the squad, which is why I think it's crucial we sign a midfielder or two soon. Evra has proven he's good enough, particularly when the rest of the team are playing well, he's just going through a poor run of form. I agree that Ferdinand needs to go though.

Hope Chelsea can win this.

Oh right, you only lost Scholes this season and won EPL and was in CL final and bought in some new players and now need another player?

Your team is amazing, you should be happy you have those players, typical Man U fan, lose a game and season is over, need a new player.

There is nothing wrong with someone giving their opinion. We shouldnt be losing 6-1 at home to anyone. Its not a knee-jerk reaction to talk about the midfield as it has been a topic for discussion for 2 years.

There are a breed of Utd fans (not talking about the guy you quoted, just in general) who dont know who Ron Atkinson is and dont remember losing 3-0 at home to QPR and wouldnt know Dennis Bailey if they fell over him. Thats not actually their fault though.

Strange that Man Utd fans seem more obsessed with getting some creativity in the side than stopping their dire defensive record.

You are aware you've been giving away shots on goal like raffle tickets this season, aren't you?

We've had 2/3 of our first choice defence out for a lot of the season and we've lost 3 experienced defenders in the summer. Perhaps Fergie should have signed another right back but we were always going to struggle with Vidic and Rafael out and 2 new players to settle in.

The thing is, as I said to pigeon, I think we've got the quality in defence present in the squad, it's just that we've been hobbled by injuries at the back which have made it difficult to field a consistent back four. When you compare United's defence to the other big teams in the prem and in Europe, I think ours matches up well when at full strength. Plus, we have several youngsters coming through who look very promising (Smalling, Jones, the Da Silva twins).

However, when you compare our midfield to say, City, Barca, or Real Madrid, it's clear we're missing the quality. It was something United fans were concerned about in the summer and it's just been amplified by today's game.

Newcastle wont be in the mix for the top four come the end of the season, not by a long way. Well in my opinion anyway :p

I know you can only beat whats infront of you, but the only teams of any note they have played are a very poor Arsenal at the start of the season, and Spurs at home. Yet to play the other big four teams.

I'm a Newcastle fan and I agree.

I don't think we have had half the credit we deserve as being touted to go down but being 4th after 9 games and unbeaten is an amazing achievement, we have been fantastic and deserved the results we have earned.

However there is no chance we will be top 4 end of season. Any sane Newcastle fan is targetting survival first, top ten second and we have wet dreams about a Europa league league spot after a few brown ales :D

It's been known for ages we need to strengthen the midfield, and please show me where I said the season was over.

Zamora just cost himself the win, his england spot and probably his first team spot in the next game. Good effort.

Didn't deserve to lose that game, two stupid mistakes and it's cost us dearly. Long season ahead :/
