Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [25th - 27th August 2017]

Early days, but United have made quite a convincing start this season. I hope they can keep the momentum up.

Madness if this is true. It's clear that Klopp wants Karius to be his number 1 but he tried this last season and it backfired then, hope it doesn't again.

If only you could give Mignolet a brain, then he'd be brilliant. He's such a good shot stopper, but his decision making is on Moreno level.

Mignolet's biggest problem is that people still judge him on performances 2 years ago. He started last season perfectly well but it was clear that Klopp made the decision that summer to replace him with Karius and it was only Karius getting injured that meant he started the season in goal. Karius struggled and Klopp was forced to pick Mignolet again and Mignolet's form when he came back into the side was outstanding - it wasn't just the best he's ever performed for us but by any keepers standards he played incredibly well. I wouldn't say he's started this season as well as he ended last season but he's certainly not been poor and done nothing to warrant being dropped.

As above, if this is true and there's not more to it that meets the eye then the only explanation is that Klopp still believes Karius is the better keeper, which is completely fine as long as Karius proves it this time. The decision last season cost us at least 5 points.

edit: it's being reported that Mignolet isn't even in the squad. Surely it can't be as straight forward as him being dropped or rested. You don't go from first choice to not even on the bench.

I dunno about that, his performance against Watford was pretty bad and he could've prevented two of those goals had he not been so limp wristed. Hopefully it's just another kick up the backside after a dodgy start to the season or something unrelated to football.

Edit: I wouldn't mind if he was just dropped from being a keeper and played as CB ahead of Lovren :p

You've got to be kidding when you say he could have prevented two of their goals. One was a point black bullet header and the other was drilled at him from a few yards out, which he only instinctively sticks his arm out at. His only mistakes vs Watford were a poor pass out from the back and when he tried to start a counter attack with a quick throw and threw it to nobody. There's no way he's done enough to be dropped under normal circumstances - if he's been dropped it's because Klopp just believes Karius is the better keeper.

I understand they have to give tv time to every side but surely they could have found more interesting games to show Stoke or West Brom in and not at the expense of a reasonably big game.

The PL only sell a certain number of games so Sky and BT are somewhat limited in what they can do. By Sky's calculations they've decided that if they show the Chelsea - Everton game then they wouldn't be able to meet the requirements of how many times each side is shown without sacrificing a bigger or more important game.

edit: I imagine Sky have decided to get some of the required quota of West Brom/Stoke games out of the way asap to give themselves more leeway later in the season. The last thing they want is to have to show a West Brom game in the closing stages of the season at the expense of somebody going for the title because West Brom haven't been given their minimum amount of TV games.

Yeah, I get that, which is why there's the option of letting them air games for free/on top of the allocation. I mean, if both were aired almost everyone would be watching Chelsea/Everton... so why not just let them air Stoke/WBA as a Brucey bonus? It doesn't negatively affect anyone in a meaningful sense.
Easier said than done. Sky/BT can't show these games as they don't own the rights to them and the PL won't allow them to show them without paying for them. Equally the PL can't or won't show these games themselves because it will diminish the value of the games they sell to Sky/BT.

The only way this can or will happen is if the PL sold all 380 games and I can only imagine they've decided that selling the extra x amount of games won't bring any more money or at least not enough to make it worth while.

Mignolet just 'rested' ahead on the International break.

Not sure I believe that tbh :o

Karius in goal with Moreno, Lovren and Gomez ahead of him. He needs to be on top form tbh.

I'm not going to blame the European football and traveling for Everton's inept performance today.

It's all on the manager. He's gone with 3 at the back that got them mauled at Stamford Bridge last season and they've been well beaten again.

3 at the back works for Chelsea because it accomodates David Luiz, Everton just don't have those players, but Koeman has gone with it again for the inevitable away defeat.

It clearly doesn't work because Everton's defenders haven't got the pace to cover the wide positions. The wing backs either leave the slow back 3 exposed or they drop back and then the 3 defenders start falling over each other.

He should go with a flat back 4 if he wants to defend and use proper wingers to provide an attacking outlet

I will always give Liverpool their dues. They will have a go at the big teams and take the game to them. They inevitably win as many as they lose rather than pack the defense and try to avoid a heavy defeat.

Liverpool - Arsenal should be a good game, dodgy defences against potentially good attacks.

Arsenal seem to be in a bad place and could end up getting a hammering if things don't go well.
