Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [27th - 28th August 2011]

B&W - agree Friedel is a great shot stopper but completely unwilling to leave his line!

I'm delighted we've got Shay in instead now :)

definitely mate, given is a brilliant keeper, really will save us 9-12 points a season, brilliant shot stopper and quite good at commanding his area.

btw dont know about you but im very impressed with how Mcleish is keeping our defense so solid and organised at the back, early days but im pretty impressed so far, we've had a good start to the season.

I'm pretty sure he had an opinion on Young which people took to heart.

Actually he specifically made one claim about how he's been since at Utd, and when people called him on it, he decided he said something different and has generally been arsey about it.

he's had a go constantly at Young since the beginning of summer IIRC when it became clear he was leaving, he has not stopped calling Young arrogant and petulant, yet can never once come up with an example.

Diving git wouldn't be a bad thing to call him, though he started diving REALLY badly, what 2-3 seasons ago literally right after his first England call up, was awful for a season and has stopped doing it, not completely but he's no worse than most. For one season he was one of the worst 2-3 divers in the league. Thankfully I do think he's stopped doing that, and I do think someone told him thats the way forward, and has since decided or been told not to do it anymore.

Aside from the diving, never seen an issue with him, at Villa he was the main man, because there wasn't anyone else. Gabby shows good form in spurts, but not enough, Heskey, lol, Carew had one good season then was useless, by and large the team has completely relied on Young since he joined, and so he takes more shots, takes more responsibility and keeps more of the ball, so what, thats bog standard for the best player at most clubs.

I suppose you can have the playing well part :p

We've got Gary Megson managing us, he likes his physical long ball football. To give him credit, I've never seen Wednesday so organised, they look confident and seem to work much harder as a team.

Then again, we've been "trying" to play through midfield, but the Megson "way" does show through at times :p

I actually don't really doubt Leeds will struggle, I think they'll be fine, the major problem is Mr Bates, who's a royal ass hat (imho) it's like you say, finish more games with 11 men and you'll pick up points :)

Yes,

We're organised and look disciplined considering it's effectively the same personnel as last season.

We are lacking a little bit of spark and need to ensure we keep feeding Benty at the expense of being too rigid.

No, I was asking who the hell are Villa bigger than?

And thats right, nobody of Ronaldo's class ever played for Villa.

But thanks for Young, quality player ...... now at a team where talented players can win trophies.

villa are a massive club mate.

1 European Cup (one of the few english clubs to win as arsenal/chelski aint won it etc)
European Super Cup
7 League Titles
7 FA CUPS
5 League Cups (first time winners also)

Dear me! you've really just typed all that nonsense just because I made a comment - how very very petty.

If you knew anything about VIlla, you'd know Young's contribution fell away over the past couple of seasons and last year in particular, Downing outshone him considerably.

Barry was effectivlely out "main man" who we relied on when Young joined.

Ill informed and very petty!

Im amazed you've turned a comment on one played into a critique of Aston Villa - ridiculous! I don't recall sounding us out as title pretenders!

I think you're getting confused between "massive" or "big" and "historically successful" :)

I think Villa like a lot of the old guard (Leeds are a good example) are still big sides, just not successful as they used to be, you've also got sides like Liverpool and Manchester United who are both historically successful and massive clubs :)

I'd argue that Villa are more successful then Arsenal and Chelsea in terms of Europe and certainly have a history that competes with either, but currently are a long long way behind them.

I also think a club in Villa's situation is in a hard place, they've sold their best players over recent years (Young and Downing, don't rate Milner)

Villa really are a mid table side and have been for quite some time now.

Over what period of time?

Last 4 seasons:

6th, 6th, 6th, 9th

We are in a hard place but did spend £24m on a striker who is consistently the top scoring English player so not too hard done by.

What are you talking about? I'm amazed I took the chance to talk about Young, who is a very very good player, and you've made it about you, one-two lines were about you, and being a wind up merchant, which you are.

You still haven't, after being asked repeatedly, come up with a single reason behind calling Young petulant/arrogant, as for Villa, I appear to know more about them than you do. As for a critique of Aston Villa, I fail to be able to see that anywhere in what I wrote, nor any mention of titles, pretenders, or, errm, anything but Young frankly.

@sandy10, please go away.

I don't mind regulars bitching about DM but when people come in here looking for a reaction then pick on DM, just go away :)

Unfortunately people have blown a flippant comment out of all proportion.

Earlier in the summer I stated in the other post that whoever finishes above Man City will win the league and was lambasted!.,..I feel that's a sound statement!

As you're insistent on incidences, in what way do you appear to know more about Villa than me?
