Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th - 31st August 2015]

Mata's not going to be providing any I'm afraid, therefore get Young on the wing and Mata or Herrera behind Rooney.

You want Mata and Herrera on the bench? Because that is the only place Rooney should be ;)

Seriously, Rooney is dire, his movement is awful, his touch is poor. I now can't remember which Swansea goal it was where the midfield got the ball broke forward, passed to Rooney, a brain dead 80 year old woman would have passed it forward to the onrushing players... instead he passed it sideways, badly, straight into a Swansea player. Woeful pass and led to Swansea breaking with a missing midfield and they went straight up the field and scored.

I said it before, Utd might be good enough with Rooney, but they'll NEVER be a great team with him in there.

Kagawa is tearing **** up in Germany now, he's epic, brilliant cross to set up one goal today, scored a hat-trick midweek was it, scoring and assisting like a mad man. Why, because the front line and the team has epic movement creating space for him and his passing. With Rooney in the team you do not get this movement. He kills attack after attack with terrible passing. He wasn't working with Utd as they play crap football with Rooney limiting them. he's either playing as an actual striker in which case his movemen/finishing isn't good enough or even worse he's dropping deep thinking he's a playmaker where his woeful passing makes him an even bigger liability.

How many great players will be stunted by having to play with Rooney, how much turn over in players will there be before Utd finally just dump Rooney. At least a younger Rooney put in a lot more effort, the older lazier Rooney is now judged solely on talent of which he doesn't have enough.

Even the basic fundamental rules, when through on goal the one thing you do is keep yourself between the ball and the defender, instead he ignored the defender let the ball drift out a bit a gave Williams the chance to get back between Rooney and the ball. Took way too long too shoot, slowed down and effectively lost control of the ball.

The sooner Utd manage to sucker an MLS or Chinese team into offering Rooney a huge wage the better it will be for them.

I'm pretty sure Rooney is there just for commercial reasons now, both with United and England. No other footballer would've been given the chances he's had during poor spells.

Kalou is having a ball in Germany too, that should tell you everything you need to know about using any other league to gauge how good a player is.

Peaked early, gone to **** the past few years.

They gave him a fat contract and made him the captain, doubt he'll ever be dropped. Gerrard syndrome in full effect, hurts the team more than he helps.

With United maybe, he just isn't good enough anymore for a top 4 side. Yet that's still plenty good enough to play for England. I think he's ready to resume his Everton career tbh. Although he won't because his wage demands will have him in the states.

United cannot continue to carry him for 5-10 good games per year.

WTF was Lovren doing for the third goal? Ran straight out of defense to make a tackle he wasn't ever going to be able to make, left a gap in defense (again) and they scored.

Good lord, if I looked like him I'd shave my arse and walk backwards

Unless something magically clicks with the players the longer he stays the better, unfortunately it doesn't seem we have any intention of taking advantage of it. Seems strange he gets such an easy time compared to Moyes, spent a **** load compared to very little and you'd struggle to say there has been much of an improvement

One failed to meet his target, the other didn't. Hence why he has been given time. Now if there is no improvement this season then he will start to get some heat.

What's the target this year? Fourth in a garbage league again?

For me at least, play better, more attractive football (this is not going well), and finish 2nd or 3rd, ideally challenge.

At the moment things feel like a mess, which given our finances and the time we've had to plan everything, isn't good news.

Yeah I'd expect Top 3 this season ideally but I'd be happy with fourth depending on the circumstances. For us at the moment it feels like two steps forward, one step back a lot of the time. We made some good signings this summer but we have taken too long sorting out the attack issue.

Yes, quite, except Kalou was pretty good for Chelsea, he just wasn't actually used much.

Stats from first year
1. 19 starts, 7 goals/44 shots, 5 assists.
2. 24 starts 7 goals/42 shots, 9 assists.
3. 17 starts 6 goals/47 shots, 4 assists.
4. 11 starts, 5 goals/37 shots, 3 assists.
5. 16 starts, 10 goals/65 shots, 3 assists.
6. 7 starts, 1 goal/13 shots, 1 assist.

He was a very effective rotation player. At Lille he scored more but not drastically more considering afaik he played more as a striker not a wide attacker, he also played consistently in both years. At Herta last year he made 21 starts with 6 goals/49 shots, arguably worse than his average year at Chelsea. SO by having a ball you mean... playing almost exactly the same as he did here?

How exactly is this proof the German league is 'easier' than the EPL? Or is this the general "EPL is the bestest league in the world, players only do better in other leagues because they are worse" nonsense that English people consistently kid themselves with.

German clubs doing better year after year in the champs league, more of the worlds best players coming from the German league and currently playing in that league than come from or are playing in the EPL.

If anything stats in the German league are far more relevant to top players and how well they'll do in europe when comparing the best players in the German league to those in the best teams like Bayern and Dortmund again. The teams capable of beating Barca, Real, Atletico, something English teams currently can't.

Kagawa was always going to do better when he left Utd considering he had a series of stupid managers who thought they could just stick him on the wing.

I really can't see Man Utd making the top 4 this season. This will in turn make it harder for them to attract players.

LVG was a bad appointment (I said it at the time).
