Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th April - 2nd May 2012]

"We started off quite well for maybe 10 to 15 minutes and looked as if we were on top in terms of possession and creating opportunities around their box"

Is he senile? How exactly did we create opportunities when we didn't have a single shot on target! I can only recall the half chance from the corner at the very beginning.

Not really he's 19, he's got at least 2 or 3 years before he's ready to play consistently in his preferred position.

I couldn't disagree more. All Jones's problems are down to positioning imo and he's crying out for a settled position (even if that means not playing every week).

So many talented youngsters have wasted far too many years searching for their best position.
It pains me to say it, but between the two teams I find it hard to like city with Mancini*in charge. So yes, I'm sure.

I don't get what the problem is people have with Mancini and regardless of who was in charge of City, I'd want them to win the League over Utd.

I think he needs to be our Vidic replacement long term if possible, the future John Terry of sorts, just not a ****. :p

I can't see him as a midfielder or a right back personally, and they need to sort out his 'creative' streak. Anyone can go on a storming run down the pitch and then lose the ball, but it's just pointless really.

I can't see him ever becoming that sort of CB. I think he'll end up as a CB but he'll be more of a CB that looks to bring the ball out of defence (probably not as gracefully as most cb's of that type do though).

Long term he's a CB, he's not going to be ready to play as a CB week in week out for another 2 or 3 years, what are you suggesting he sits on the bench till the odd Carling Cup tie comes around just so he only plays that one position?

I think it would do him and the team more good than shifting him about all over the place, yes. He's shown that he's potentially far better than Smalling and certainly Evans so maybe it's best that Jones is first choice to fill in alongside Vidic (when he's back) when Ferdinand's out.

I think Evans and Smalling are both much better at the min. Maybe he'll come on in future, but for the time being he's nowhere near first XI.

I like city, and I like Mancini. I wanted ballotelli to come in tonight too. Sheer entertainment :D

I've liked city since the playoffs against gillingham. Possibly the best non Leeds/England game ive watched.

I rate Jones but did wonder if the move came a year early for him, another season playing regularly at CB probably would have done him some good. Can't think of many CBs MU have bought as teenagers and gone on to be a massive success, even Rio was 23 when he signed having served his time at WHU and Leeds.

I think it's well documented that Taggart wanted to wait another season before going for Jones but with Liverpool and Arsenal making bids, they were forced into going for him last summer.

I wouldn't say there was a noticeable difference between him and either Smalling or Evans in terms of current ability. In fact, I'd say that Jones was better than both 95% of the time but (possibly) crucially he's got a mistake or 2 more in him right now. He needs to be playing but I think shunting him about is doing him more harm than good.

is it just me who thinks phil jones was £15m too much?

Yep just you.

A really good Prospect If he is going to be the foundation of the United and England defence as so many current and ex-pro's suggest then he needs to be played at Centre Half

You didn't see us in the Kleberson/Bellion years then.

That was only part of the team, the rest of the team was better overall and irrespective of the quality of said players, they played better. Even when Utd were losing the title to Arsenal or Chelsea for two seasons, they were just a better team. Was Kleberson any less utterly worthless than Park is now? What about the fightless Carrick, Macheda vs Bellion.

I still don't like Rooney, he's in a non position, I don't think he's at all effective deep, a huge number of his goals this year are tap ins, he's scored one 30yard screamer type goal this season IIRC. He's not a playmaker, he's not even close to good enough for that role, he'd probably make a very decent long term up front striker, same as RVP. It's no surprise that in Rooney's best season he played way upfront and scored way more than normal, RVP is playing far more upfront in the past 18 months and goals galore. Tevez left Utd where he was more in the current Rooney role, running around trying to kick everyone as he chases them. As Hughes turned him into the "upfront" striker again his goal scoring went through the roof.

RVP, Tevez, and even Rooney as your furthest man forward give you between good and fantastic goal scorers, who can also cross, pass, drop deep now and then, etc, etc.

Utd, and England to a degree have been building teams over the past 5 years with Rooney more in that role than not, and he's just not good enough for that role. Welbeck is just rubbish, and no one single game(which you drew) doesn't make a player all of a sudden great. Tevez could have come on and bullied players, RVP could scare players ****-less if he came on with 15-20 mins to go, Aguero, Rooney, etc, etc. Welbeck came on and did absolutely nothing, not even the customary "hey lads, I'm on now, you're in trouble" random foul to let them know they are in trouble. Scholes comes on in games Utd are in trouble and he'll foul the most important player on the other team to unsettle them. Welbeck is a big girl.

Wow, didn't realise Park had gotten this pointless, from 365

* The collective 'what the ***?' as Manchester United's team was revealed almost broke Twitter. United had lost eight of the last ten games Ji-Sung Park had started, and all of the last four in which he had started in tandem with Ryan Giggs. It felt like Manchester City had been given half a goal start even before kick-off. Park had not begun a Premier League game since January and his 57 minutes were both an explanation and a consequence of that fact.

Seriously, 3-4 years ago Park was almost half decent as a Fletcher style "go irritate the opposition" as opposed to actually being, you know, good at football. I'm sure there was a time where dropping an offensive player for Park in a difficult game worked, but if it hadn't worked all season, and really for at least two seasons, surely that makes it one of the single most ridiculous decisions Fergie had ever made.
