Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th December 2014 - 1st January 2015]

Well i think were very lucky, Both pens were harsh on them the first one flat out wasn't one at all, 2nd one i can see why ref gave it but abit harsh.

We haven't been great, We seem slower this week too much hoofing it to sterling for me also.

Impressed with Sakho/Can again both doing very well.
 
Started the half slowly and I think we saw the difference in having Manquillo at RWB on Monday - Can got pulled out wide a couple of times early and struggled in one on one situations.

Fortunate with the first pen - I have to say watching the live TV angle it looked like he swept the ball with his arm but it clearly hits him in the face and from where the ref's looking I'm not sure how he's got it wrong. I'm not too sure why people are calling the 2nd pen harsh though - it's that sort of incident that led to the interpretation of handballs being changed. Simpson's arm is out to his side and whether he meant it or not, he gained an advantage by having it there as it blocked the pass. Unfortunate but not harsh imo.

After the 2nd goal we've started to play better and better and hopefully we can carry that into the 2nd half and improve our GD.

Poor performance and we should consider ourselves very lucky to be ahead rather than behind.

Coutinho, Lallana and Sterling have all looked lively again, Sakho looks better on the ball and Moreno has been excellent down the left again but we've got no pace or energy through the middle now that Gerrard's back in the team and Henderson's been moved out to the right. He and Lucas do not make and will never make a good pairing.

You and PK have mentioned Can getting caught out, Still i think he is doing well he isn't a natural CB but is playing better than the ones we have over all imo Sakho included

I just hope Rodgers doesn't play him there all year as in midfield i think he would be far better

I was thinking about this the other night. I've got a feeling it's a conscious decision to play Gerrard and Lucas together in games where the wingbacks are more attack minded (whether that be Henderson, Markovic or Moreno). If you had Henderson + 1 in midfield with Markovic and Moreno at wingback (for example) you could find yourself exposed as Henderson will naturally bomb forward. If Henderson does move into midfield then you've got to sacrifice something down one of the wings by playing at least 1 more defensive wingback.

I'm not criticising him because like you say, he's not a natural CB let alone natural playing CB in a 3. I think we've seen a lot of natural CB's struggle playing wide in a 3.

However he did clearly struggle early in the half. A couple of times Leicester attacked down that side when Henderson was caught forward and he got spud too easily. There was one incident in particular where he's tried to jump in and win the ball but he's gone the wrong way around the Leicester player and made it easy for them to spin in behind.
 
I'd be tempted to bring on Manquillo for Henderson because he's completely wasted out on the right. That or sub Gerrard or Lucas half way through the second half for Manquillo and move Henderson in to the middle then. Either way, Henderson offers us nothing at all where he currently is and keeps looking to cut inside which exposes Can.

Previous games I'd agree, he hasn't been able to get into the game from there. Today I don't think that's been the case though. 2 of 3 times we've very nearly got in behind them when Gerrard's switched the play quickly. Unfortunately every time Henderson's not had the confidence to take the pass first time, he's let it bounce and it ran away from him.
