Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [29th December 2012 - 2nd January 2013]

bring back carl jenkinson. better RB IMO

He's miles and miles better than Sagna, he can defend for one thing, something Sagna flat out can't, but he's a better crosser, has a decent shot on him but simply links up with the right winger better and isn't a complete girl.

However Wenger is doing what he does best, picks a favourite, kills the progression of other players to let his favourites play despite every single performance being an embarrassment. Unless Sagna walks or breaks his leg again Jenks is screwed, Wenger WILL NOT make the decision to drop Sagna and back Jenks, he just won't, he's shown that he won't for 7-8 years.

What is even more embarrassing is Gibbs is probably even worse defensively than Sagna, and we won't even let Jenks play at left back :(

+1 for Jenkinson to start more, I can't believe Sagna walked back into the team on name alone. Jenks was performing to a decent standard and really improved his game when he had that extended run. Sagna should have had to prove himself on the training field but then he's French and Jenkinson isn't, so...

Just curious, was there ever a period in time when Arsenal had Henry, Bergkamp, Van Persie & Fabegas in the squad?

Yes, its really odd, it "feels" like Bergkamp left so long ago and that Henry must have left miles afterwards but Henry only left a year after Bergkamp, went to his testimonial which was the first real game at the emirates, got about 10 free t-shirts as there was one on every seat and it wasn't a sell out, we were near the back where the least people were :p

Fab/rvp joined in 2003 and 2004 respectively, Bergs/Henry left in 06 and 07 respectively.

Because of where they played I don't think we saw all 4 play together that much, RVP/Bergkamp often played the wing role or withdrawn striker and tended to be subs for each other rather than play together.

That is why the 2004/2005 era team was god damned awesome, and why the team now in comparison is embarrassing, though Berg's wasn't near his best for his last 2-3 season with us. I'd kill for one guy this year anywhere near the quality of any of those three strikers, let alone having 3 AND other good strikers/wingers/youngsters :(

EDIT:- I guess Henry's last few seasons were far more memerable than Bergkamp as he scored a buttload compared to bergkamps 2 in his final season, and the loan last year half makes you forget how long ago he left Arsenal.

Even though I manlove Titi I think Dennis has to be my favourite Arsenal player. I wish he'd come back and teach our players how to pass, instead of running down the wing, stopping, and playing it backward. :(

Oh look, Sagna almost scores an own goal but for good reaction by the keeper, he's such a blundering idiot.

As for Walcott, as with the last few games, he has no presense upfront, he so rarely closes down a keeper or defenders to rush them into a mistake, there was a short back pass and Walcott went for it but still a distance away slowed down and clearly pulled out, the keeper was under less pressure. If he'd just kept going maybe it rebounds off him, maybe the keeper tries to turn and makes a mistake, he's just such a lazy girl.

As a right winger he doesn't fight hard enough and doesn't get involved a lot, and upfront he's the same, he's always waiting for everyone else to do ALL the work and get him an uncontested chance on goal.

Drogba is a better finisher than Walcott and will turn a whole variety of situations into a chance to shoot, Walcott won't. He's such a waste of space, Drogba will bully a defence for 90 mins causing mistakes, chances, less pressure on his own defence. Walcott is involved for 2 mins every game. We need players who get involved for entire games and are consistent..... we also need fullbacks or to play the best fullbacks we have.

I couldn't begin to count how many points we've lost by playing a worse defender, midfielder or striker over significantly better players in the team purely because Wenger loves certain players even if they are completely crap.

Henry and RVP up front with Bergkamp just behind with Fabregas in Midfield would have been utterly awesome today.

Are you saying Gervinho, Giroud, Podolski and Walcott doesn't match up to those guys? :p

Seriously, "old" Wenger could spot out good RVP was, new Wenger thought Gervinho looked that good, it took me 45 minutes to spot EVERYTHING that was bad AND good about Gervinho, and he has not looked different in a single game for Arsenal, his short comings were plain as day yet Wenger can't see them anymore.

Seriously if Arsenal don't buy a fullback(or 3) in this window I'm going to plot the assassination of a frenchman.... probably two or three of them actually.

Linesman saves our bacon with a plainly wrong cool denying Southampton a great goal, assuming without a good replay that it was for offside wrongly and there wasn't a foul as it didn't look like one.

I finished night shifts on Monday morning and I still feel completely monged out. Arsenal seem to be doing a great job of interpreting this into a football performance.
