Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [29th December 2012 - 2nd January 2013]

:)

Just back from a game everyone watched on tv (and cannot wait to read DM's comments).

We should have won! Such a great feeling we have actually sorted things out slowly and can compete :)

Arsenal were just tired and really looked clueless, good CB pairing but everything else is just a bit clueless at times.

It's quite alright, if you look carefully you will find the reply where I laughed at your comical flip flopping and misguided beliefs that Wenger is brilliant at improving players, and the idea that Walcott would become great if he stays.

I can't find that post in this thread at all

I posted that here...

And I'm worried you are confusing my posts with your own :D

What post number did you laugh at his comical flip flopping :D

 ROBBED!

I sit at the other end of the ground to Gaston's second goal so couldn't see why it was not given. Not a foul on the CB at all. :(

Great performance but should have been all 3 for that.

Saw a better(ie not stream quality :p ) replay of the "shove" to deny you guys the second goal, rubbish. Two hands != push, effectively all Ramirez was doing was stopping Kos shoving him out of the way.

Look at the Green own goal in the last round of games, two players pushing against each other to hold their own ground is very different to actively shoving a player away from where they are. We got insanely lucky that was given as a foul, harsh on Southampton as 3 points could well decide if they stay up, for us the point won't make a difference.... we won't get promoted and I couldn't care less about champs league football, it won't change the team for the better just being in it next year and we now really don't have anyone good enough to leave under the pretense of demanding champs league football so we're finally safe :p

Walcott upfront has been insanely poor for several games, him on the wing is insanely poor, it should be pointed out that against Newcastle we became FAR more fluid once Giroud was on. Walcott, he doesn't ever score goals anyone else can't score, they are bog standard forwards play, running in behind and scoring.... any striker can do that, Walcott uses pace where other better players use inteligence and timing and don't ignore the rest of their game.

Gervinho or Walcott upfront and we look significantly worse than with Giroud upfront, he's not brilliant but you can pass to him and have him find a team mate, hold up the ball, turn and shoot, he's not great at anything but he isn't so utterly limited, and that free's up other players.

Arsenal will improve if we get/play guys who perform for 80+ mins a game rather than 2, its pretty simple. Fullbacks, seriously, every player bar none has bad games and every single player will be directly responsible for goals conceded.... but Sagna and Gibbs its EVERY damn game, one or both of them, they are utterly inept and both pretty poor going forwards.

RVP, what can I say, I've been saying for years and years he's one of the best players in the league, a top notch striker, and wouldn't have any trouble being one of if not the best players instantly at Utd(or anywhere else). You can see in his touch and movement how good he is, he's mostly shooting rather than playing creatively because thats the job he has right now, he'd score less but be equally good on either wing or playing deeper and more creatively.

He's been involved in loads of goals where he is involved deeper, exchanges passes with multiple people before setting up or scoring a goal.

Second or third time this season we have been robbed by mad ref decisions like this (Punch a few weeks ago scored near a falling over keeper which was ruled out for some joke of a reason too).

3 points would have been a dream :p but I said in the car on the way down anything from the game is more than enough so a point will do. As things are going we should stay up, just have to thrash Villa in a week or so and this wont come back to bite too much.

Walcott was troublingly bad, offside, dreadful touch and his only threat of the whole game was the ball in that Guly smashed home for the og. Bit silly that was his entire contribution to the 90 mins.

Giroud on the other hand was really good, genuinely had me worried, no idea why Podolski was out wide though, really really ineffective out there, 17 year old Luke Shaw had him under the thumb after 5 mins which is just silly.

If it makes you feel better everyone has a Gervinho, we have a white guy that is probably worse in Steve De Ridder! Came on, ran for a min, fell over and then basically became useless left back 2... At least Gervinho got a shot off....

Both your full backs were naff, Gibbs being on a par with Puncheon is silly (as he is a one trick pony) and I was amazed how useless Sagna was. So much went to him with a resulting mistake. Made Cork look great filling in the same role for us.

Love watching Arsenal though, so hit or miss, for a fan of another team it makes for proper entertainment. Just glad we have sorted some reasonable playing and less mental mistakes (apart from the goal keeper problem)

Gervinho cost 14mil though, and probably gets near enough 60k a week, and most awfully..... Wenger started him for ages ahead of everyone else for no reason what so ever.

I'm absolutely fine with buying duds, I'm not okay with being unable to recognise a mistake and rectify it, Wenger's blind arrogance that Gervinho is great and should start when fit cost us point after point after point.

Also I wouldn't care if you buy 10 players and get a couple bad, when it starts being buying 10 and only a couple are good.... I get angry.

Walcott is like that EVERY game, I think I can name maybe 3 games in his Arsenal career where he has genuinely been a threat over the course of the game. He's scored hattricks while being utter utter turd for 85mins of a game. That is football, its why Heskey(probably) got a hattrick, or several games with a couple goals despite being woeful. A 90 min very good performance is something a crap player can do 5 times a career, and a fantastic player can do every game, a player who struggles to be good for more than 5 mins of almost every game is worthless.

To be fair to Podolski, both Luke Shaw is looking really quite a prospect(I don't go in for this age crap, a player is good, or bad, you can get a bit better, or worse, but a terrible player even at 17 rarely becomes good let alone great, and great players are usually very good at a young age. But aside from that its the way Podolski plays, he's not a natural winger, he's not a crosser(he can cross very well but its not his game style). he likes to come infield, play one-two's with people, when there is someone on the field upfront he can play WITH rather than TO, he can be fantastic. When there is a dead weight upfront and the seemingly many games Santi is not very good in midfield and not getting into dangerous positions in/around the box then Podolski can't play off anyone, and becomes crap.

He's pass and move, not move with the ball, and you can't do that with Gervinho/Walcott upfront. He looks HUGELY better with Giroud upfront, and when Santi and/or whoever upfront is having a good game, his interplay links great with everyone.

We spend over 140mil a year on wages, we have no need to throw money and a contract at Gibbs, he's just spent what is likely minimum 40k a week on a 4 year contract on giving Gibbs a new deal, thats 8mil on a defender WHO CAN'T DEFEND and has cost us points multiple times this year... and thats on a player who can't defend AND is very injury prone, its INSANE. Baines at 15mil, for a guy who is fit, rarely injured, and top notch defensive and going forward would be hugely better value, AND we can afford it, and we could and should have got him cheaper than that a couple years ago.

If you buy Gibbs and it turns out he's crap, again I don't care, but when you hand someone proven to be awful a new contract.... its ridiculous.

I think there is a new and old Wenger, but both Wenger's never learned from their mistakes, we just had a great squad to hide them. For 8 years, its the same stupid lack of ability to see how good a player is, same handing repeat contracts to terrible players, same boxing out of our real young talent till they get crap for never playing. A kid who is great at 17 will stagnate and be rubbish by 20-22 if he's never played real football. They end up with this "i'm being paid anyway, I tried and got nowhere" attitude and never really try hard again. SO many times we've got rid of the wrong player and rewarded the wrong players and ended up where we are now.

Man for man, the team is now laughable in quality vs 2000-2005, not because we haven't had top quality players, but because Wenger keeps spending on crap players, and letting great players leave or forcing them out.
