Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 7th December 2011]

Why somebody from France? Did he have a history of signing players from France while at Spurs?

I seem to remember him signing a lot of young British players and a couple of fairly well known and fairly well established players from Europe (Berbatov & Modric for example).

Just that he'd just come from working in France for a few years (I thought, could be wrong) and I'd have thought he'd have known the league well, especially with decent players being available from Ligue 1 in the summer, not an outlandish suggestion

e.g. Gervinho available but you went for Downing for £18m?, Cabaye available but you went for Henderson for £16m

Why would Hodgson be offered the Spurs job?

Why would it be a bad thing if he took it?

Or are you saying he'd do well there?

I don't understand anything any more. Wake me up when Arsenal kick off.

Find it amusing that so many Spurs and Arsenal supporters have been having digs tonight. One club haven't won a trophy for how many years and the other won't have a manager in the summer because he'll either be banged up or moving on to the England job. Great futures for both clubs.

Whilst in the same timeframe Liverpool have seen a rich vein of form winning countless Trophies. Or was it just 1 in that same period.

Cue Suarez ban after Frimpong doing and Meireles doing the exact same thing in one game ;D

When did Frimpong swear at the crowd? (Genuinely interested as I've not seen it mentioned)

No, he spent £16m on Jordan Henderson, £16m!

 Guardian says £20m..

Is Gervinho a good example? Not only are they different styles of player but Gervinho's pretty useless too.

And it's not an outlandish suggestion, just a pretty lazy assumption. Comolli is said to particularly favour local players (where possible) because it reduces the risk of the player failing to settle etc.

The Guardian is wrong.

And I'm not sure whether it was aimed at the crowd or not but Frimpong gave somebody the finger after being sent off vs Liverpool. Meireles incident was the same game too.

I also remember Babel giving the linesman the finger once too after being given offside.

The Guardian says he was £16m here :p

Gervinho is good, better than Downing for less money anyway, much, much more productive

Anyway, I don't really mind, hopefully he'll stick about and you'll waste more money as it makes our job easier!

Gervinho is good

I disagree.

And while Downing has been far from a success, his biggest problem has been the standard of our finishing. Even in games where he's not played well, he's put in a few decent deliveries which we should have been scoring from.

And how does us spending money make your job easier? When City replace Tevez with Van Persie in January you'll be *****ed :p

I think Gervinho will change your mind in time, he drifts past defenders like they're school kids, once he sorts out his decisions in the box he will be awesome! Very direct and entertaining to watch, I can see why people don't rate him yet though

I doubt RvP would go to City, I think he'll get offers from some great clubs, he'd ruin Italy imo

I've not based my opinion on him because of bad decisions. I've based it on the quality (or lack of) of his final pass or shot. I mentioned not that long ago, he seems to be having his very own miss of the season competition.

He's still managed to make a lot of chances/mayhem though. As I say, bit harsh to write him off after a few months here. If he's still not sorted out those parts of his game in a few months then fair enough. He has really contributed to our direct attacking and is a big asset for us imo

Gervinho has 3 goals and 7 assists (5 in the League).

Downing has none

We've scored 17 goals in 14 games. As before, Downing's biggest problem has been the players on the end of his crosses.

He's hit the woodwork more than any other player in the league and we've failed to finish off nearly every chance we've created.

That's not a defense of him though, he's been poor. I don't see how Gervinho would have been a better option for us though.

Also Liverpool fans won't like this and I'm not wum'ing but I think Suarez almost rivals Gervinho for wastefulness (please be a word), he is struggling with the same thing but I bet you have a very different opinion of him ;)

C'mon Suarez has missed his share of sitters this season. I can admit Gervinho has

He missed the 1 great chance vs Stoke that I'd put alongside some of the Gervinho misses but other than that, he's not missed many absolute sitters that I can think of.

He's missed a lot of 'chances' because he's looking to shoot all the time.

Yeah, I've said it before about Suarez, not sure if it was on here or not, but his enthusiasm is his downfall sometimes, one of his best qualities is sometimes his worst weirdly
