Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 7th December 2011]

good shot. if any liverpool fan says that the red wasn't justified after that close up then, well, i don't know what to say.

There's no question really, I'm just surprised the ref saw it tbh, I have to admit when I saw it in real time I didn't see anything like that sort of connection

Baz do you have a link to the rule or anything? He seems quite adament he's right, I haven't read the rule I'm only repeating what I've heard commentators say, who could all have been telling us lies for years

was it a second yellow or a straight red? all i remember was that there was less than 25 minutes gone and it was wreckless.

It was a 2nd yellow. The ref walked past Adam and stood ready to step out the 10 yards for your free-kick, the Spurs players (led by Bale) surrounded him and he then decided to give Adam the 2nd yellow.

and rightly so. the blokes only got himself to blame. already on a yellow, less than 25 minutes gone? ''i know, i'll do something stupid just outside my own penalty area''.
i don't remember the ref walking past adam and preparing to mark the distance, selective memory there from you perhaps? i could be wrong though...

Not official (:p) but point 12b here:

edit: and I wouldn't even say Suarez's arm is ahead of Hangeland's right foot anyway.

I'm not defending Adam. I was just pointing out to a Spurs fan that we're not the only side that has surrounded officials.

About the offside, discussing it with a ref and Liverpool fan elsewhere, he said Suarez is offside (his arm), I posted back saying isn't it any part of your body you can score with (i.e. his arm can't be offside), he posted back saying the rule doesn't state this and it's any part of your body, making Suarez's arm offside, does anybody else know the rule?

You are offside if any part of your body which can be used to score a goal is ahead of the last defender

Only 1 Spurs player in the shot.

lol, that's after he's shown him the 2nd yellow and he's walking off. Go watch the incident again and see Bale and a couple of others surrounding him.

edit: As I said, the ref went back to give Adam the 2nd booking after the Spurs players surrounded him.

I was responding to somebody criticising players surrounding officials. What does it matter whether Spearing (or Adam) deserved to be carded?

i thought you were implying that the spurs players essentially got adam (rightfully) sent off and thus proving that not only liverpool players surround the ref. the difference is that liverpool players were trying to save their player getting sent off for a correct red card decision ie their team was in the wrong. the adam and bale incident was liverpool in the wrong again.

i know i''m bashing liverpool and i'll stop now. roll on the weekend so we can do it all again.

Turns out that ref was wrong,

In the context of Law 11 – Offside, the following definitions apply:
“nearer to his opponents’ goal line” means that any part of a player’s head,
body or feet is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the
second-last opponent. The arms are not included in this definition

From the FIFA site

Oh, I was saying Bale got Adam sent off, you're right there. He did deserved the 2nd yellow though but for 1 reason or another the ref wasn't going to give it.

Whether players are appealing because the decision should go in their favour or not, makes no difference. The whole point of the discent/respect stuff is that you respect the officials decision and you don't surround them.

The referee was only going on what is assistant said though. Annoyed me somewhat as had Suarez to score 1st.

and i really wish the players would. compare it to rugby and it's embarassing.

Right sat at work now thoughts on the match.

I think a draw would have been a fair result, both teams had good chances and it was a good game to watch, unlike some others I have stayed up for.

Suarez goal should have stood, even Paul Walsh said so!

No pen though, was outside the area.

Still don't think it was a red card, you can zoom in as much as you want but that's after the tackle and not deliberate.

I'm now tired and annoyed and have a full days work to get through :(
