Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th - 31st August 2014]

Promising for United.

LvG is starting to get this squad together.

Burnley seem pretty solid defensively. Don't see them scoring many but good luck all the same.

di Maria was impressive.

Looking forward to the rest of the season.

Promising? Could not score against burnley. Did Rooney even get a shot off??

lol yeah would be good to see him out the dug out giving orders, don't think he's even done that once

Would be nice to see some passion. Just remember what Fergie was like if things weren't going right. he would be up and down that touch line like a mad dog. :D

Not a great performance.

I'm still not sold on the 3-5-2, I think United would be better with 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-3-2 but meh, i'm not the one with five league titles.

I'm also not sold on persisting with Anderson, Valencia, and to a lesser degree, Young. I'm also starting to panic that we might only get Blind in between now and Monday, which I think would be a bit of a disaster.

I don't blame LvG for this start really. We have plenty of injuries and the cover he has is just ****.

Valencia, Young, Blackett, Fletcher, Evans have all been less that bottom of the table standard. Every one of Burnleys players outplayed those guys in every way. Work ethic, passing, positivity, ability on the ball, composure, attacking flair, possession.

That was genuinely one of the most depressing games I have watched as a United fan.

I think Young is a useful squad player to have and Blackett doesn't look too shabby for someone so young/only making his first appearances in the 1st team..

Valencia, Anderson, Fletcher, Evans, and to a slightly lesser degree Welbeck have all got to go. Awful.

Last laugh at who?

Hey, we all support our teams no matter how bad they are.
And certainly won't give up after 3 games of LvG in charge.
We have to be optimistic - if we weren't we'd just shut off and forget about football.

I have noticed that our defenders/midfielders have a tendency to either back pass or side pass.

I am now assuming that LvG's system does involve lots of back/side passing. Our failure is that when we do pass forward, we have a tendency to pass to the opposition. If we can get the forward passes right, RvP/Rooney are will see more of the ball = more shots on goal = more chance of scoring.

The other problem is that many of our players are not comfortable in possession and end up panicking, when they have possession and an opposing player presses them.

If we can solve the following 2 issues:
1. be comfortable in possession (no panicking when an opponent is pressing them)
2. increase the successful (forward) pass completion percentage

...we'd definitely slice open teams like Swansea, Burnley, Sunderland and MK Dons.

We came 7th last season and since then we have lost:

Giggs
Vidic
Ferdinand
Evra

Couple that with our injuries and today we were playing with last seasons first team minus.

Giggs
Vidic
Ferdinand
Evra
Carrick

Thats pretty much all of our most experienced players / our entire midfield / defence. Their current replacements are **** and until we get our injured players back I don't expect things to get any better.

Just remember what Fergie was like if things weren't going right. he would be up and down that touch line like a mad dog. :D

LvG can also give the hair dryer treatment. However, because confidence is so low, perhaps his tactic is to focus on the positive things.

Like telling the players what they are doing right, rather than chastise them on their weaknesses.

If the manager tells his players that they are ****, what little confidence the players have, may go completely.

Think of low confidence as a contagious disease - if not treated/contained, it will spread to even those players who are confident.

I think LvG given time will come good.

I don't, I questioned his recent relevance for club football and especially for the EPL. If you can't motivate the squad for 3 points at Burnley then hes doing no better a job than Moyes. Yes it was right to get rid of moyes but the passion, energy, skill, technique, desire and entertainment is no better.

It will get better by continuing to throw 50+ million at players but does that make him a good manager. On the evidence so far no. I said before Moyes was signed he would be the fall guy from the Fergie era and then you would go through a period of managers spending hundreds of million on their own squad to be replaced by the next incoming manager. I still see that happening, until the fans get so used to 5th or 6th that a younger man can come in and start to rebuild properly. Youth team, coaching and scouts. Until then you are playing top trumps and hoping it gels.

He's targeting fourth this year and the PL next season. I think he will do well to get fourth next season.
