Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th - 31st August 2014]

Argh, someone tell Blackett to stop ****** giving the ball away by playing **** long balls.

Every time the ball comes forwards Van Persie is completely static. The ball came forward there, Rooney won the header flicked it on....and then Van Persie started his run. He's such a flipping passenger.

How Fergie actively gave him starts over other players I don't know, I can accept a player being pushed to right back in game due to injuries but one half of Valencia there and it was clearly something that should literally never happen again... then he gets started there IIRC in a champions league final where he was abysmal. Then Moyes did the same things, using him and then at right back some times.

Considering the lack of cover at right back in terms of reliably fit players(which Jones/smalling are not) how right back wasn't also done very early in the window I don't know.

Again you might not be able to get the best player ever but, even with Blind as a choice there, buy a cheap £3mil right back from a championship side if you have to, would still be a huge step up on having to revert back to Valencia.

Yep, agree with that, he's never looked comfortable, in any position actually. His positioning and decision making is nonexistent for him to play right back, and his final ball is too poor for him to play further up the pitch.

What's happened to Rafael? I know he's a bit rash in the tackle, but surely a better option at right back than Valencia surely?

Theo Walcott comes to mind as well

I'd have agreed a few years ago, but since Henry went in for that short stint, Theo has improved his finishing, unfortunately he's suffered a couple of injuries which has put him out for a fair while.

That's what happens when you have no midfield, defenders hoofing it up-field and strikers left doing nothing.

Front 3 look rubbish with that midfield behind them, defense equally so.

Really, he's moving loads but he was stood in the space where Rooney should have been trying to head it, you can't really know where someone is going to head it. Imagine if he had started running and Rooney did head it down into the space rather than directly at the Burnley player, the header would have ended up behind RVP and he'd have no chance to get to it.

It's not exactly Rooney/RVP's game to play little/large, they don't do it every game for years and there is no "I know where he'll head that" set up there. He stood in the space simple as that.

EDIT:- should also add that in certain striker combo's you can expect your strike partner to win the header, Rooney isn't known for winning headers against CB's, if the Burnley defender was 70% favourite to win the header RVP took up a position that both Rooney could head down into AND the defender might have a clearing header fall in to. Running on praying for a perfect header when Rooney isn't that likely to win the header is frankly silly.

Biggest issue for United is that they're so impatient. If they slowed the ball down and let their front four knock it around for two minutes they'd completely control this. They're forcing the match too much.

Burnley have so many players up near our defence when we are mucking about at the back and yet we still can't find the space behind them. We need to go to 4 - 3 - 3 after the break.

That would probably have been a penalty if it wasn't Sir Dives a Lot
