Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th Dec 2011 - 4th Jan 2012]

just trying to work out who utd fans feel is to blame? i mean, i know jones has great potential but you conceded 3 tonight, he gave away the free kick that lead to the second and we all know about the 3rd. united conceding 3 on the bounce is not a regular occurance is it? why's it happening, you tried a different keeper tonight, it happened again. i know your squad is depleted but your core was pretty solid.

I think we all feel that its a general thing.

Valencia at right back
Carrick, giggs and park and not at the races any more and simply not good enough
Ferdinand and Jones partnership which isn't helped by valencia attacking so much
Nani on the right wing instead of left
General tactics and effort tonight were really poor.

Newcastle outplayed us in every area of the pitch and just watching the game was painful to see how many players supported newcastle as they went forward and how easily our attacks were broken down.

No one individual is to blame, it was a weakened back four (and out of the 9 central defence partnerships its one that has worked very badly for us as Tom pointed out) and the first two goals were just stunning, not much that could be done about them from either a defensive or goalkeeping perspective. The last was just an unfortunate mix up, who knows whether Lindegaard called for it and Jones didn't hear it or if there was no call, it was irrelevant anyway as the game was long over by then.

Both Manchester teams beaten by the North East teams. Doubt we will see that happening again in the near future :p

Who cares about sunderland!!

We have took 4 points off UTD this season by god it feels sweet!!!

Don't think no one has more goal line clearances than Danny this season.

Is that a serious statement?

lol felt like saying it at the time due to the og but i know he has potential. read my other posts after though, i am honestly trying to find out from utd supporters why they feel you conceded 3 on the bounce. i've read your post btw

lindegaard not at fault for any goals. He looks so assured most of the time a bit like a young friedel. De gea makes a mistake every time I see him play and he looks petrified, a but like Gomes. [I do still love Gomes though]

I think thats just his 'look'. Jay Spearing always looks a little odd when I see him regardless of how he plays. Some people just have that deer in a headlights look.

Both united and arsenal are flunking big time. tides are turning in both cities with spurs and city now the number one clubs in their respected cities :(

City have teh funds to buy teh title out of united and Spurs are keeping there best players(what arsenal should have done with fabregas).

United and arsenal cant compete financialy with city and arsenal dont have the balls to say "no" to a 30m offer for our star players

Stop talking crap...for a couple of seasons before Fab left us we did say no to Barca but in the end, Fab wanted out and i dont blame him for going. There was no point keeping Fab if he didnt want to play for us...geez anyone with half a brain cell could figure that out:p...if we forcibly kept him, he probably wouldnt have played with any sort of passion, passion that he gave Arsenal many yrs of. Not his fault that we couldnt win FA when he played for us, Wenger and the current crap we have is to blame for that.

Europa league for us next season...cant see Arsenal getting 3rd or 4th in all honesty.

Whilst I agree in principle it's not 1 thing that's the problem it's certainly not Carrick in midfield, or Nani not playing on the left and the Ferdinand/Jones partnership isn't flaky because of Valencia attacking either

I don't think Nani playing on the right is a problem, however only playing one winger is a problem. It makes our attacking predictable and easy to defend against. Park tonight and Welbeck last weak offered absolutely zero from the left.

Carrick wasn't great tonight, he never looks good against teams that press because he just panics when he isn't given space.

absolutely, but Gomes was condemned on that look as being flakey and his Tottenham career eroded over time by every mistake being highlighted by the press. Sad but true dat :-)

Really?

Carrick is simply not quick enough, good enough or dynamic enough. Nani looks much better on the left and Valencia left us short at the back a number of times tonight. He should have been there when Jones brought down Ba but he was 20 yards (or so) further back up the pitch.

You can take these frailties in your stride if there are not 5 or 6 of them at any one time. Put them all together though and you have a recipe for tonights performance.

Modric could force his way out, if he wanted - surely you'll concede that? You're just lucky he's a decent bloke (or maybe he made an arrangement with Levy, similar to the Ronaldo move being agreed a while before he left, iirc?).

Players do have the power, imo.

Yes, and Tottenham have proved that they do not need to bow to that power. They are also proving that they can provide a platform for these players to acheive all that they want to. If Modric, or anyone else for that matter, decides they want to sulk, I'm pretty sure Levy will let them - in the reserves. I don't think we have any player who would behave like that however.

Modric is 26, and I think if Tottenham fail to qualify for the champions league again then yes he will leave. Probably the same will happen with Bale. But if they do leave, it will be for a premium.

VdV however is a different kettle of fish, he seems to fit in better at this sort of club and I honestly don't think he'd move to a "bigger" club at this stage of his career. He'll probably go back to Holland when his contract is up and retire there.

I don't really understand why you are attacking Spurs like this though!

Valencia should not be blamed for this at all, he is 100% a right winger through and through, why he is being forced to play at right back is beyond me. It was even more of a bewildering decision from Fergie to put Nani and him on the same side.

Disagree, he may not have been great as you say but he still managed to create space for himself and I can only remember 1 or 2 occasions when he lost possession through being pressed. I'd really like to see his passing stats because again I can only remember 1 or 2 times he misplaced a pass tonight.

Nani looks much better on the left

For want of a better term, tosh! Nani is infinity better on the right than he is on the left. The problem though that against Blackburn and tonight he's just been poor full stop and our best attacking player in recent weeks Valencia was stuck at RB.

no doubt the press will try to spin it so they lost because united played poorly

simple fact is you played them off the park

it happens so often that 'lesser' teams playing the top 4 never get any credit

*******s.

If they beat the top 4, the papers go mad, and if they somehow scrape a flukey draw (see Newcastle at OT), they have always showed a lot of "grit and determination", despite being outclassed and scoring with their only shot on target.
