Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th October - 3rd November 2015]

The flat out refusal to drop Rooney, or even take him off, is astonishing. That's really a bigger issue than anything else at the moment.

true - that is the biggest problem - but who would you replace him with?

Martial out up top and young on the left? Possibly Perriera I guess

absolutely no pace in the side (apart from Marial, who is marginalised on the wing) passing for passing sake rather than anything effective and we still allow teams to create chances against us

completely dire

Yea, Depay hasn't been amazing but there's obviously potential. I don't understand why LVG doesn't experiment with a proper attacking team for one game, the fans would understand if he lost. He would be at least showing some flair. Put Mata, Rooney, Martial and Depay up top with Herrara and Morgan/Bastian/Carrick next to him. I reckon you'd score some goals that way.

The tide is starting to turn among the fans, yes it's not been a total disaster by any means, but I'd swap him for Ancelotti right now.

Oh look the united fans are no longer moaning about missing out on Jose they are moving onto Ancelotti. :D

;)

Yea, he still needs to be given time. He does seem a bit odd though at times..

People talk about Moyes being defensive, i see this UTD team being more so, the 2 Sch's in the middle of the park is a bad idea.

Give him time, it's 3 months before you see benefit. Oh wait it's now three years. Perfect for retirement. On the other hand the standard throughout the league is abysmal. Look at Liverpool fans crowing like they won the league, they are still terrible to watch. Hopefully he sorts that out because there are few teams if my own wasn't playing I'd pay to watch.

I'm forgiving our manager his sins because everyone is crap :D

Both the Sch's can play offensively, they aren't primarily defensive players but if the main guy ahead of them keeps dropping deep, offering nothing and being in the way there isn't much they can do. We saw the game where Bastian was running into and closing down the CBs, he can play well offensively.

You just can't play offensively when your main striker destroys literally every attack. When the focal point of the attack ruins everything, doesn't work the defence at all and slows everything down if he manages to keep possession. Rooney drops 15 yards deep asks for the pass then immediately passes it 15-40 yards backwards rather than turn and run forwards. He shouldn't be dropping deep in the first place and when he does he then passes backwards which he also shouldn't do.

The few times Rooney either hasn't played or has gone off Utd have instantly improved dramatically.

Martial up top, Young on one wing, Depay(for lack of anyone else yet) on the other, Mata behind Martial and Herrera and Bastian in central mid with Darmian/Blind as fullbacks(till broke leg dude whose name I can't remember right now is back).

15mil a year, 300k a week, over double what 98% of the rest of the squad makes, Rooney can't be dropped I would say by the decision of the board. The worst thing Moyes did wasn't 7th, but being involved in giving that idiot 300k a week and for 5 freaking years.

Ultimately there are two possibilities, LVG is choosing to play Rooney, in which case he deserves to be fired, or the board have made playing Rooney something he's not allowed to mess with and it's the boards fault. I would still lean towards it being the boards decision, people say LVG is stubborn but he seems perfectly capable of turning on a player and being a relatively good judge of talent. The people it would hurt the worst for Rooney to not play is the board, commercially he's worth so much more playing that not and he certainly isn't worth anything on the pitch in football terms. LVG has no reason to play him, the board have every reason not to play him.

you realise its only been just over a year since LvG arrived - so nowhere near 3 years you mentioned (he cant be held accountable for the season before he arrived )

Literally anyone. :p

Something like:

--------Schneiderlin
----Herrera - Schweinsteiger
--Mata -------------------- Depay
------------Martial-------------

Both Herrera and Schweinsteiger can push forward and occupy any position.

Seems pretty sensible to me, but LvG will never do it.

Yea, whichever, just take one of the more defensive players out from infront of the back 2. Bastian is 31, theres a reason Bayern sold him, becuase they thought that his legs werent what they used. Which is true. You have 2 deep lying playmakers basically that arent clicking at all..

Your overestimating how much Moyes had to do with that. You think Moyes sat down with Rooney's agent and said this is how much we will pay you. Do me a favour. Managers just say whether they want the player or not, its then up to the club. Blame the board not Moyes.

Depay hasn't shown anything in the EPL (and hardly anything in the CL outside the qualifiers) , happy for him to be on the bench but should only be a sub at this point (even without Rooney in the team)

 I'm not talking about the years before he joined. He said it's a three year task.

"We are improving a lot but it takes three years."

Even Scholes is getting stuck in, Giggs must be losing patience.

Yes - it looks like Fergie was right to show him the door. He generally knew when a player was finished and it didn't matter who they were either.

Rooney has to play, has to.

Why? He's been utterly gash for 95% of the time he's been on the pitch and seems to think he will always play no matter how bad he's playing. Ferguson wouldn't have stood for it, captain or not. He needs a few games on the bench or being subbed to see his work rate and work ethic is nowhere near what it should be.

Rooney is without a doubt Man United's greatest ever player. This poor run of form is a mere blip. He'll come good, just be patient. Give it another 10-15 games.

Bull **** football from Stoke today, was like watching them 5 years ago. Cynical fouls, niggling kicks, dirty play, they should have had 3 more yellows and a red.

Another good performance, we battered but Butland was unreal, without him it could easily have been 6/7-0.

Disappointed we didn't win, we needed it, but another decent performance.

Probably got something in his contract that he has to play, wouldn't suprise me.

Personally thought it was down to poor finishing. He did make 2 decent saves, though. We're truly ****ed if we don't win next week, and we probably won't. McClaren has won, what, 5 games this year? Including a 9% win rate during his time here. Our starting XI is nowhere near perfect, especially our midfield, but it's honestly not relegation bad.

Watch Villa get Garde in now and glide to safety. It'd honestly be great to witness just how incompetent Charnley is, the absolute nonce.
