Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [3rd - 7th February 2017]

And I got shouted at when I said Cech wasn't going to be the game changing signing everybody made out.

He's been dramatically better than any keeper we've had since Lehman, he may not be at his best, but he's still been great for Arsenal and got us many points. The problem is personnel (directly) wasn't the reason we lose, it's Wenger. I never thought Cech would change our ability to win anything(beyond Fa cup the big teams no longer care about) because Wenger is an idiot, keeps around the likes of AOC/Walcott and hasn't fixed multiple problems with the way we play in the past decade.

No players will change the fundamental issues present because Wenger is our manager, but Cech was still a great(but short term) signing.

He made a huge error, every year every brilliant keeper makes huge mistakes that cost goals... that doesn't change anything about how good he's been for Arsenal overall.

why are u laughing?

chelsea have wrapped up the title today. U and everyone else got no chance of catching them now!

If you've payed(is it paid?) any attention to Liverpool since November you'd realise that winning the league is hugely improbable and getting top four is going to be a real push.

Also what isn't funny about someone out bottling Liverpool, got to enjoy something in football :D

It's not that, he's an excellent keeper, his distribution is shocking sometimes.

My post wasn't purely relating to that one mistake. When Cech signed all the talk was how he'd make such a big difference to Arsenal and they'd be serious challengers again. Two years down the line and we're seeing the same Arsenal. A group of talented players but they're spineless and gutless.

Neville still banging on about costs and defending Wenger, for him as a Utd fan Wenger is brilliant now.

It was Neville who like 3-4 years ago decided to state that Arsenal's stadium debt had gone and that is why they were now spending then said Wenger had no money to spend this whole time because of the stadium.

The guy is an idiot, the debt is around till ~2030, the debt repayments haven't really changed from 2006 through to today and through to 2030. We've at every single second since the move had more money than we've would have had if we stayed. It's such simple maths, 50mil extra income, 18mil or so payments on debt a year... we've never not been 30+ mil better off since the move, it has never once hurt us financially, ever.

Thing is after stating that nonsense on Sky, a huge number of fans decided it was true, you had Arsenal fans on here and everywhere else banging on about the debt being gone because of it. The numbers are easily available to be seen, Arsenal publish their books, they told the fans how the debt would be structured before, during and after the move... but we live in an age with alternative facts, people believe whatever they want to even if the truth is printed in black and white directly from the source.

Neville really is a special case. The stupid **** somehow managed to swing the job at one of the biggest clubs in Spain with zero experience but he has an issue with an Arsenal fan being fed up of the same **** year in year out. What a creep.

As DM has pointed out, he's been Arsenal's best keeper for a long long time, they are hard to come by, decent keepers, he would play over Mig's for example. Bit harsh to say they spineless and gutless, whatever you wanna think i suppose.

Leicester is a special case, no doubt, but to still have this **** 'be careful what you wish for' mentality is for losers, especially at a club like Arsenal. 'Be happy with 4th' is basically the crux of his argument.

Constantly contradicts himself also.

Said Costa wasn't involved at 2-0 too. Aye 2 assists is nothing I suppose :D (Okay the second one was kinda the Arsenal defence but still)

It isn't harsh, it's true. The team crumbled again, Chelsea were better, we were almost as bad as they were in the first match this season. The difference is that was an extreme one off for Chelsea and have been phenomenal since. We had that one fluke great game, and have been frequently poor since then dropping too many points.

Every team is bad now and then, the regularity with which we crumble against the biggest teams isn't just random, we constantly have a bad record against the top 6, sure there is a year here or there where luck plays into it. On average our record is weak as hell and how predictable it is that we'll be this bad on such occasions goes beyond questioning if there is a mentality problem at Arsenal. There IS a mentality problem with Arsenal, we've got a bunch of spineless players, Walcott, Ozil, Wenger, Coquelin.

Again I was pointing out, we were 3rd, but that was having played less games against the top third than any other team(by a few games) and more against the bottom 3rd(or maybe middle 3rd, I forget tbh). We also had one of the worst records of top teams against the top 6. That meant like a 80%+ chance that over the rest of the season as the records even up(we play more top 3rd games and Chelsea/others play more bottom/middle 3rd games) that we'd drop back by a good 6-9 points more at least and it's literally happened the very next game.

I didn't say he wasn't a good keeper. He is but he's far from the keeper he was and has made zero difference to this Arsenal side. And of course it's not harsh - look at Hazard's goal. Your defensive midfielder getting shrugged off the ball by Hazard of all people. If that's Sanchez picking the ball up in that position then Kante or Matic are brining him down 50 yards from goal.

The thing is, 4th means nothing. I'd prefer to come 15th while trying to improve than watch the exact same 4th place every year, playing the same football, for ever increasing money.

Two important things to remember, no club in europe, or the world for that matter, spends as much as Arsenal do and win as little, none. We are BY FAR the biggest spending failures. Arsenal fans pay through the teeth to constantly watch failure and if it means not paying the likes of Walcott 120k a week, I'd happily come 15th. It winds me up more than anything watching this team fail to improve, watch the fans pay ever more and watch Walcott get pay rise after pay rise for failing, same goes for Wenger. If Ozil stays because we throw 250k+ a week at him, for being the guy who can't show up in the big games, I give up. Wenger rewards players for failing and spends our money to do it, he also likes to have a pop at the fans lately for asking him to spend... when it's their money, they have every damn right to ask him to spend it.
