Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [4 - 8th May 2013]

Menotti? Sacchi? Cruyff? Herrera? Pozzo? Nicholson? Michels? Happel? Guttmann? Lobanovskiy? Trapattoni? Stein? Paisley? Shankley?

I don't think it's as easy as just saying that sir Alex is the best ever, I don't personally think he is.

You didn't answer the question though, who do you think is the best manager ever?

I'm not sure, I would have to think about it. I gave a list of managers who could all be named the best manager ever. It wouldn't be Fergie though.

Is that enough for you Tom?

Not really :/

You seem to be suggesting there could well be one who could be named the best ever, Fergie is without question one of the best ever but I dont think anyone can lay claim to being the out and out best of all time

Given that I've listed managers whom I consider to be at least equal to Fergie in my opinion, and given that I've been unable to name one and have said that I would need a lot of thinking time could, just seem to suggest I don't think there is one whom is best, but I've not thought about it more than in passing to name some of the best managers off the top of my head, or you know, make conclusions :).

Fergie is without doubt successful, but there is more to being a manager ;).

Michels for example gave the world a style of football, a footballing ethos, total football.

Who the best is, is utterly subjective, I hate people trying to name the best players, because its so completely pointless, if I tried I can't quantify who I think the best is, what film I like best, what food I like best, etc, etc.

What I'd say about Fergie is, he's been a great manager, I don't think he's currently anywhere near as good as he was 10 years ago, I think the team he's built now isn't even a patch on previous teams he's built. I think he's got incredibly motivational skills and can get more out of a particular group of players than most other managers could. I'm not convinced he's the best buyer of talent in the world based on the number of high cost flops and how many people were after certain other players like Ronaldo... its not like Fergie saw something there that no one else did.

He's one of the most successful managers around, but has had vast resources during his entire reign compared to the competition around them, it doesn't negate what he's done, but mistakes don't cost him as much as they'd cost other managers, and few teams can compete on size of squad or ability to attract top players, which are both huge advantages for any manager.

This to be honest.

Hes managing what is still one of the richest clubs in the world, a club that can still outspend all but 5 other clubs in Europe even now.

Yet you would be hard pressed to argue we have a squad that is anywhere near the best in Europe, he has retained a good deal of his ability over the years, but his or the clubs recruitment policy or scouting network what ever is not the best at this moment in time.

During the 90's nobody had our spending power domestically.

Did anyone else spot Crouch doing his impression of QWOP there, brilliant. Do love that with a man advantage, Stoke have had a massive, massive 12% possession in the past 5 minutes.

I didn't quite understand why Newcastle fans wanted Sunderland to "do them a favour" against Villa.... when Sunderland losing is what leads to Sunderland having a better chance of relegation than Newcastle.

Not really sure what Di Canio has changed, he hasn't dropped anyone, still playing Larsson out of position, and aside from swapping Mclean and Johnson a few times a game which I'm not even sure they didn't do before Di Canio, same team, same rubbishness, bit of belief and a couple lucky results and back to their usual selves.

What happened? I've only just switched the game on.

I'm really nervous watching this, Stoke winning could be huge for us :p

Came in from opposite direction, high(not hugely), late, studs up just above the ankle, really nasty tackle(expecting a Spurs fan to say he deserves it for getting Bale somewhat similarly). Coming in from the opposite direction studs in, high and catching the standing leg is just the worst way to catch someone, stupid stupid tackle, utterly not needed and was no where near favourite to get to the ball first, almost no chance of getting the ball, almost no chance of not smashing into the player, very obvious red.

Stoke look like they don't want to win!

No, thats just how Stoke play when they try to win :p

Like I said, they went a man up and the next 5 mins they had 12% possession, that is pathetic if the other team have an extra man.

Stike are pathetic, I would absolutely prefer Stoke to be the third team to go down this year, but after them my next choice would be Sunderland, considering the points totals at the start of this game, far better chance for Sunderland to go down so kinda hoping for a Stoke win.

Unless they make huge improvements I think next year might be Stoke's last in the prem for a while.
