Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [5 - 6th October 2013]

Apparently Januzaj has refused a call-up to the Belgium squad. Maybe the FA going after him isn't as desperate and futile as I had though. Or not as futile, at least.

I heard that he'd be 23 by the time he's eligible to play for England. If he becomes a player good enough to play for England, he's not going to wait until he's 23 to play international football.

Honestly.. I'd play him now! Walcott plays any time he's fit, so I think he must be good enough. :p That is of course if he was English.

Fellaini must have a dirty secret on every ref in the country. It's the only possible explanation as to how he gets away with elbowing every opposition player at least twice per game.

Twice per game? Twice per half.

I like Fellani, I know I'm in the minority, but I don't think he's a bad player. I just don't think he's a first team player for a team of Manchester United's calibre, don't get me wrong, in a poor midfield a player of Fellani is welcome, but Manchester United need to strengthen (quite a lot in my opinion) but Fellani is a welcome option and back up to the first team.

Fans need to show patience, this is a transitional period for the players, club and fans and expectations need to be adjusted.

He's turned them down a few times so I've heard.

Anyway, the Belgium manager has confirmed he's concentrating on his United career first :)

If he's good enough to play for England.... that doesn't mean he'd be good enough to play for a decent international team ;)

It's hilarious and usual footie fan daftness though, one start.... one very good performance.... straight to "can we get him to play for england?"

He could break both legs in a week and never play football again, or simply turn down Utd for a new contract and go off and play in Spain/Italy/Germany/anywhere, it's a little early to talk about how he'll help England win a world cup yet.

Sounds like a very sensible kid, so obviously he won't be playing for England.

Both Wenger and Rambo aka Ramsey have been named as Barclays premier manager of the month and player of the month.

Both well and fully deserved.

I thought it was five years... and I think he came over when he was sixteen... so another few years. Wiki says he signed for Manyoo in March 2011, so he'd be eligible in March 2016 (assuming he applied for naturalisation, etc, etc). At which time he'd be twenty-one.

I think eligibility is based on 5 years within the country after they turn 18 or 5 years of schooling within the country.

There is always the home nation's agreement which England would have to break to get him to play for England.

Either way, I don't think he will play for England.

FIFA statute 17 "he has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant association."

The "home nations" voluntarily agreed to opt out of the residency rule in 1993. FIFA's statutes state that "associations sharing a common nationality", as is the case with the four nations, can make an agreement to remove the residency clause. Said agreement exists between the four associations.

As an alternative, the four nations can make a claim to naturalise a player if he received a minimum of five years education on the association's "territory" before his 18th birthday.

I don't really understand the fuss and I'm sure Manchester United fans would prefer him to concentrate on the club for now and just develop.

I thought he only rejected Belgium as he was determined to play for Kosovo?...sure I read that somewhere

According to the article I read, he's eligible for Belgium, Albania, Kosovo, Serbia, and potentially England. Apparently his dad is Albanian and wants him to play for them.

EDIT: Oh, and Turkey. International kid.

I also remember hearing that his preference was Kosovo but they don't have a national team yet, they play along with Serbia I think? something like that anyway...

Kosovo isn't recognised by FIFA and I don't think they will be for for the foreseeable future wither. His chance of plying for England is almost zero as well, since all the home FAs have opted out of the 5 year residency qualification. They have choose to only apply it, if he has been schooled he for five years.
