Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [5th - 6th November 2011]

It's not just AVB that's done it though, I'm thinking back to the Avram Grant days, Arsenal looked favourites for the title for much of that season but come the end it was Chelsea that was pushing us all the way

Up till now at least it doesn't matter who's in charge Chelsea are always there. They've also got the ability to spend £££'s in January if things aren't going according to plan as well

In the Avram Grant days you could have put a strategically shaved monkey in the dug-out and Chelsea would have challenged. He had no effect on the team whatsoever. They had a spine of Terry, Lampard and Drogba running the side and they were uber powerful. These days are gone as far as i can see. These players are past their best for a week in - week out campaign. Chelsea now DO need leadership from the dugout, im not sure ive seen much of it yet.

A centre back to cover Kompany is a cert from what I saw of Savic today :p
I must say that he didn't do well today but in the other games he has played he has looked comfortable. I think the battling of Hegulson etc shocked him. He is only 20 and so has plenty of time to learn.

We had Kolo on the bench but i think he will be gone in Jan. PSG apparently interested and we don't really need him now with Savic and also Boyata. We also have a fantastic prospect in Rekik.

Dzeko after the game..

“It was perhaps the hardest away game of the season so far,” said Dzeko
:p

I had QPR pegged to go down on recent form but if they keep performing like they did today they might stay up, City did look absolutely shocking in defense without Kompany though.

Watching the chelsea game today nearly gave me a heart attack. The defence is woeful and its not because they are getting too old, its because they are all too slow in pace and reactions. The number of times Blackburn had decent breaks at 3 on 3 etcs should have allowed them a decent go on goal. Torres miss was terrible but then he still looked pretty amazing on the ball just not in front of the goal.

It is like Chelsea have gone to a hardcore American drugs clinic and are purging all signs of JM and his defensive sense

Its probably symptomatic of having a manager who feels he can take chances defensively because he is used to running over most teams.

The tactical aspect of the games doesnt have to matter as much if you simply have better players. AVB has had that so far in his career.

Any Coventry fans here?

No? There weren't any at the game either :p one of the worst teams in the football league for attendance! 3000 saints fans sour sang 10k of coventry fans (apparently 12k but it was more empty than wigan... @_@)

But yeah top of the league and really can't complain :D

Who's was that goal at the end of the football league preview show?

And was the Olly Murs just after it as well?

That's exactly my point though, for 3/4's of the season Chelsea weren't challenging under Grant but come May and Arsenal had slipped out of contention Chelsea ended up being the nearest threat. At the moment only us and Chelsea know how to win the Premiership this is all new to a lot of the City players so like you said it'll be interesting to see if they can keep it up all season

He already thinks he is billy big spuds :p never mind on double the wages.

As Mancini says every game he scores etc he needs to improve. He was at fault for the 2nd goal today imo, he was fresh off the bench and just had to make a little effort to block the cross instead he didn't do anything and the cross goes in and is scored.

This season where every player is setting such a high standard he is being found wanting for large periods of games he starts or comes on, if it wasn't for the fact he has scored some sublime goals and some excellent assists he would likely be sold this Jan.

Unless the contract inspires him to push himself further. It could go either way. We gave Richards one after he exploded on the scene and it made him go backwards until Mancini came in and has now got him firing again.

Ok Johnson is criminally over rated, but he won't be on a silly deal, and if at any point Mancini doesn't think his pet project is working Liverpool will happily give us about 40 million for him. It's win win :D I do admit though it's the very last thing I saw coming. Still, Mancini wouldn't pay him so much attention if he didn't think he could get something out of him. He'd just get rid of him like he has everyone else he doesn't want. Johnson should recognise this and get his head down rather than shaking it sideways. If Roberto manages to pull a Micah Richards with Johnson we'll have one hell of a player.

To me this season is going the exact same way as last season in that Chelsea were battering teams left right and centre with no one taking into account the fixtures they've played. Dont get me wrong winning at Spurs and OT were big results for them but would City score 5 at WHL if they played the game tomorrow? No, they caught Spurs at a good time. Would they have scored 6 against us if it had stayed XI a side? of course they wouldn't, in fact something that is often overlooked in the derby is that City scored their first against the run of play and MOTM Richards was given the right run around by Young in the first half

Am I missing something, Chelsea had a epic 5-6 opening games, then went crap when Lampard was injured, why are you comparing that to City? Surely the direct comparison is infact Utd, who started this season with a fantastic 5-6 game run in the league, only to get an injury and have the team fall apart and even when getting results, really not looking very good?

How are last years Chelsea comparable to City, in any way, at all? City have a MUCH stronger squad than Chelsea have ever had, they haven't had their single best player, most consistent scorer over the years nor their play maker injured, nor have they dropped off like Chelsea did that quickly.

Chelsea also didn't particularly get worse because of who they played, they got worse because their talisman got injured and they had no alternative at all. After Lampard came back into that Chelsea side they had great form, amongst the best in the league and looked in with a shout at the title till quite late in the season.

Brilliant goal from Silva today, what a player :(

Surely he's got Barca DNA ;)

While I like Silva, and have done for a long time, the automatic love fest because he's Spanish is doing my head in. The commentator going on and on and on, and on about a non existent dummy creating that goal and the genius that is Silva. The pass was a little behind him, so he had to stretch a little behind him to get the ball. It was a fairly simple, but excellently executed first touch and a relatively simple finish. It was good, it wasn't world class, it wasn't a dummy or some magical bit of creative unseen before skill.

Silva more than anyone else is being massively overhyped this season purely because he's Spanish. Jesus, they were banging on in this game, before this game and all week about the pass of the season to Dzeko. Again, well executed but, one defender who was facing the opposition, flat footed and stranded, and all Silva had to do was knock it anywhere in behind that defender, he had a 30x30 box to aim for, it wasn't anywhere near the top 50 passes in that game, let alone the season, but because its Silva everyone has to talk up every single little pass he did.

In the build up to the game they showed a few of his assists/chances created this season, every last one they showed was significantly harder and better than that Dzeko pass last week.

Anyway, time for sleep, football from 11am to 11pm tomorrow with almost no break ........... I think I'm going to skip a few games tomorrow :p Real Madrid in the morning, Spurs and Barca are thankfully the only "big" games tomorrow. If it was a proper super sunday with a few decent derbies or the top 4 playing it would be a painfully tiring day of footie tomorrow.
