Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [6th - 11th April 2012]

You mean they don't operate in a realistic business world and will spend 100mill each to catch up with a team who barely spends 20? :D:p:D

you've spent more than spurs have this season but then it's only really re-investment, which is commendable. i honestly thought ashley would've shoved that £35m up his jumper.

Thats what I mean, after the top "5" we are next.

And the start of this season definitely people put us at being mid table at best but I knew we are better than that.. there is a lot of rubbish in this league

i think a lot of people (me included) felt hughton had been treated unfairly and didn't want you to have any success because of that.

there is an awful lot of rubbish in the league right now. spurs haven't been brilliant over the weekend but look at the likes of sunderland, blackburn, wolves, stoke, villa etc and it's serious *meh* can't wait for some fresh teams in the pl. norwich and swansea have been a breath of fresh air.

We haven't used that 35 million though.

That's the point, we sold the likes of Enrique, Nolan, Barton and used the money to buy better, younger, cheaper replacements. Most of that £35 million will still be in the club.

Tottenham have under achieved with 'Arry, I've said this for a while, that first eleven is really good. It's such a massive shame if they don't get a Champions League spot this season as I very much enjoyed them in Europe and think they're better this time round.

The whole England / media love affair with 'Arry has been disgusting for a number of reasons.

I couldn't agree more. Spurs should have built a stronger squad in both windows but something has obviusoly been at the back of Levy's mind all season. I feel quite let down be the whole affair.

We have done well on the wage structure too I think, we got rid of high earning players.

We are better off financially, better off with players and in the league. Things couldnt be any better...

Other than the fact the stadium name which is a joke, St James park only! :) but football is all about money...

Whether we make it to the champions league I cant see us changing our financial ways and going out to sign some "big" players.

I must admit when they sacked Hughton I was like here we go again, but credit to Mike Ashley he has done good, glad to see Hughton doing well still too. Pardew didnt have a bad record coming to us though, I guess its how some people think, I guess there are some fans that still want the names but most fans have been very realistic since our last decent run almost 10year ago.

Newcastle being relegated was the best thing to happen to us since Sir Bobby turned up

well, we bought pienaar and then loaned him back. he wouldn't have gotten much game time anyway but he's performing well at everton.

other than lennon, spurs have actually been quite consistent in our line up.

in all honesty, BAE has to go if we want to progress. kaboul needs a consitent, experienced partner (wouldn't have minded samba)

we should stick with walker and bring corluka back from loan as he's a better option at times and could maybe teach walker some basics.

king needs to retire and go into coaching.

Yeh Krul, Cabaye, Tiote, Ba, Cisse, Ben Arfa will all be looked at Im sure.

I just hope they dont leave, but you can't force anyone to stay.

It will need big money to get some of them though

Ermm, yes you can force a player to stay. They are under contract for a set amount of time, unless they buy themselves out.

Ashley is no clown when it comes to finances and to progress so well on so little money to then throw it all away buy suddenly changing the entire squad because some of the 'big boys' think they have rights to every other teams players?? Not a chance.

We don't need the money, our players are incredibly happy, they are all on long term contracts, we will have more money to give to those that deserve improved contracts as we are getting shot of Loverman, Smith etc, they are part of something big and all know the plan moving forward, they will more than likely play in Europe next season too.

You are naive to think Newcastle will just sell stars willy nilly.

What about the achievements of the managers in charge of Norwich and Swansea respectively? Remember Norwich have had back to back promotions.

Absolutely for me it's between Pardew, Lambert, Rodgers and Fergie. If Newcastle fail to make top 4 though remove him entirely as harsh as it may be

I think Pardew should be manager of the year whether its top4 or top6.

Him Lambert/Rodgers/Moyes and Wenger ...

Lambert and Rodgers obviously coming into the league first time and both potentially being top10.

Moyes for possibly finishing above Liverpool and we all know how he has gone about being at Everton for years always doing well with nowt.

Wenger for turning it around big time, looking like they will finish 3rd when they were wrote off constantly earlier on

Sorry Moyes or Wenger? Neither should be praised for turning anything around instead both should be judged on why yet again both teams had horrific starts to the season (more so in Evertons case tbf as Arsenal generally fall away after March not get better)

Neither of those should be ahead of SAF

Wenger has done well, everything was in crisis, lost our two best players, Wilshere hasn't kicked a ball, in 7th at around x-mas, what he's done since then is miracle work. Not the best in the league but he deserves credit.

Yes, bitter or clueless :D

Arfa’s goal was very special yesterday. The cheeky back heel turn to dumbfound the opposing player leaving him on his ****, avoiding his last ditch foot stab at the ball, in turn creating loads of space, the turn of pace straight after, staying on his feet after having his heels clipped, more pace, then a sublime perfectly weighted pass/nudge and another turn of pace to take him past the remaining defenders before finishing calmly and confidently into the bottom left…amazing goal. So pleased I seen it in the flesh.

All done with pace, precision and pure technical ability...and it's not the first time he has done that either.

It was a very good turn, he then ran into 30-40 yards of space unopposed, when a defender came at him, the tackle was so bad that Ben Arfa just ran past it before toe poking it into the bottom corner.

Technical ability? You mean he made a good turn than ran into open space before tapping the ball in? If Bolton hadn't defended like a Sunday league side, he wouldn't have got anywhere near the goal. The fact that the only bit of skill he needed to do was when he first got the ball shows just how poor the defending was..

But don't let facts get in the way of your dreaming..

I really don't think Tottenham have that much to worry about, maybe a few new defensive signings but they aren't desperately needed. What the Norwich game did show is their reliance on Parker, they had no workhorse in the middle which allowed Holt to link up with the midfield and put the Spurs defence under constant pressure. If Parker had of been there, he would have moped the ball up before any move could really get going and Spurs most likely would have won..

Big money talks.

If someone offered 30m+ for one of those players they will be gone

More so to clubs that need it, we don't. And only if suitable replacements are lined up.

Ashley is now obviously using us has his main advertising platform for SD. The more exposure the clubs gets the better for SD. Europe is what his long term ambition is and I now thoroughly believe he has his head screwed on correctly and seen that sustained success in football will come from stability both on and off the field.

Ashley turned down offers of £30 million for Carroll before selling at £35 million and demanding all the money up front and it has now also been said he along with Pardew were the only ones who didn't actually want to sell him!

You're naive to think that Newcastle can hold onto a player who wants to leave! If x big team comes in with a serious bid for Cabaye, and he wants to sign for them, he will go. You'll get a very good price, but he will go.

Which of our players want to leave? Please enlighten me.

I never once said we could hold onto a player that wanted out...Carroll for example.

Nope not dreaming, I was there is actually happened and it happened the way I have just described.

utterly, utterly ridiculous thing to say, beyond comprehension at how stupid a statement that is. Ashley taking over is the best thing that happened, the worst thing that happened in his time in charge is relegation and caused 10's of mils in losses in that season due to wages and lack of income in that season.

Fat Sam almost brought financial ruin to the club, loading on heavy wages on past it players who offered next to nothing. You did get rid of some of them via relegation but you could likely have offloaded some of them for more money had you stayed in the prem league, and you didn't manage to offload Nolan/Barton on huge wages till you were top half of the table anyway.

Good ownership was the best thing to happen to Newcastle, relegation wasted millions thrown down the toilet in debt, nothing less. Had you not been relegated you'd have every chance of being in the same position, with 50mil more money to spend by now. Getting rid of Fat Sam early before another transfer window disaster from him was both a bold move, one disliked massively by the media and everyone talking about Ashley being a moron, and was 100% the correct, and most important decision really. Had you not gone down you'd have built from the next season, very possibly with Houghton as well, getting rid of some of the utter tosh like Viduka, and have simply have made far smaller losses that season.

Yeh Krul, Cabaye, Tiote, Ba, Cisse, Ben Arfa will all be looked at Im sure.

Why would most of them WANT to leave? They are at a club that while not considered big in terms of success in recent years, have a very big stadium, huge support and are all first team. Apart from Tiote, in which case every current top 6 club has room for him easily, most clubs have the positions filled so aren't desperate to pay big prices for top players right now.

Likewise, at Newcastle they have a chance to be part of a growing team that is moving up the table, they will likely get euro football this season and get to play in all the big games the club face. I can't see many if any instantly wanting out this season at all, in a couple years, if Newcastle get noticeably worse, and a big club comes calling offering 150k, I can see a few leaving but if I was any of those players I don't think I'd take a move this season unless, Real/Barca came calling which again I don't think is likely for a year or two.
