Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [7th - 11th February 2015]

Amazing talent? I'm not so sure. Our only true world class player of late is Di Maria (based on what he did last season). Overall the squad is good, but getting on a bit in some respects, and needs further freshening up.

.

Surely De Gea has to be included as a world class player from what he has done this season (rather than last season)?

I wanted Januzaj subbed today because it wasn't working for him vs WHU (unfortunately) - he just looked a little tired in the 2nd half. Still needs experience but should become a great player

I just saw the Piers Morgan tweet about Kane not getting on the Arsenal bench and I laughed.... Because it is probably true! Wenger wouldn't give him a sniff.

Everyone has a different definition of world class but for me De Gea isn't... That doesn't mean he can't be but not yet. He's played consistently well this season for probably the first time in his United career, he needs to keep that up for longer to be classed as world class imo.

What has Januzaj ever done or shown that makes anyone think he will be a good player nevermind great? I think I've seen him have one good game in his whole career...

Oh, of course I'd include De Gea in that, but I was thinking more outfield players, as that's where the problems are.

De Gea has been very good this season, even if the media have gone a little overboard at times with the praise.

Besides De Gea, I cannot think of any Manchester United players in a good vein of form. The defence has improved, but in reality it was difficult for it to get much worse.

Midfield is directionless, without bite, slow, and often bypassed.

Forwards are too slow and woefully out of form. Very little width in the team aside from Valencia who is incapable of crossing.

Also; Manchester United are a long ball team this season, it is not a 'plan B' at all in my opinion.

The club itself, I feel, is without a footballing identity at the minute and is totally directionless on the pitch (aside from long ball and/or 'give the ball too Rooney or Di Maria'). Tactically poor, slow, predictable.

While Van Gaal's record is excellent, that does not get him an automatic free pass forever, nor does it make him immune to criticism. I'm still very much unconvinced.

There is still a lot of deadwood on the books at the club, there is no footballing identity or ethos at the club, and the entire squad look directionless. Tactically a mess, slow, predictable and teams are no longer afraid of Manchester United, they are not intimidating anymore and nor is the manager.

You don't think he was one of the better united players last year? Ok some might say that's not a great achievement last year, but it's not like anyone has stepped up this year except the goal keeper, but then he's getting lot's to do.

Last year loads on here where raving about him or begging for him to be brought on. Saying he was carrying the side, only player who looked a threat and so on. Sell him or loan him to us! We gave you our last world class Belgian, it's the least you could do in return! :D

We've been playing awful since the start. Who didn't see that?

Niw even sam allerdyce is accusing us of rubbish football.

No, runningman just makes up everyones opinions for them. We say that we are getting better and we are overconfident in his eyes. We whinge about a game or a few games where we have been poor and suddenly we are all saying that United are crap again.

He is just the worst kind of supporter. If you actually read what all the United fans on here say its not that hard to follow yet runningman reads it in a way that fits his own narrative which is pretty much always "United are rubbish and you are all fickle and wrong"

Cool story Bro.

fez still bang on there.

I disagree. I think the worst kind of fan is one who thinks we are playing well after not losing for a couple of flukey matches. Overlooking our deficiencies to the point of ignoring them is not a goid idea. What a difference a month makes eh? It was only in January you guys and the press were fawning over our run of results, ignoring how we actually performed.

The guy has played like 2 games since November? Maybe give him a bit more of a chance. Can't be expected to perform when he is left out for so long. I thought he did some good stuff, a nice interchange with RvP set him up for a chance and his play with Shaw was the highlight of of a lot of our moves.

That's because he clearly hasn't impressed enough to start? I don't seem him as a great player, seems to be over hyped. Just an opinion. Shaw worked his butt off yesterday and was just a little rash resulting in the red card. The one player who seemed like he wanted to be there.

I think this is slightly in-accurate in as much that United want /need to save their spending until the summer, when they can clear out the likes of Jones/ Smalling/ Valencia?/Rafael? and possibly a few others.

They could / should have bought a centre half (and therefore possibly sold one of the above) in Jan, but doenst look like LvG was seriously trying to get a player in - just registering interest for the summer.

It doesnt help that the club dont have the players LvG wants to use / for the system he wants to use (and SAF let a lot of ineffective players stay on the books who shouldnt have, and of course Moyes only made this worse - by wasting a year if nothing else).

The amount of change LvG had to cope with for a top team was always going to take several summer windows to resolve (and possibly one or two more to evolve the whole squad).

Januzzaj is still very young, and has very little experience. I like Shaw a lot but he had a huge advantage starting at a smaller club and getting regular starts for 2 seasons or so before moving to United , and even then he is struggling to regularly start. Maybe Januzaj should be given a year on loan to another EPL team to see how he can blossom with regular starts (depending on how the rest of the season for him goes of course).

United are a shambles at the moment. Aside from the league position the team has not progressed under van Gaal. Personally I think he is leading a charmed life and I am amazed he isn't getting some more serious stick.

The only area where I feel our performances are more creditable is in defence. given that they conceded 5 in one match earlier in the season the GA tally at 23 is competitive with the other top 3 sides. Yes De Gea has been influential on that but you cannot argue with the figures. I would venture that we are harder to beat under van Gall than we were with Moyes. HOWEVER.

Beyond that it is hard to identify any progress. the teams play in an attacking sense is a joke. LvG has looked to prefer playing

Rooney - Di Maria - Janzuzaj - Blind
Falcao - van Persie

This clearly is pure folly and does not work. Blind is tidy enough defensively but that is the best you can say. In an attacking sense we create very little and are very easy to counter.

I have wondered in the past whether or not Rooney could transition the way Scholes did. For those of you who have been watching for a few years you may recall that Scholes was a striker but one that wasnt quite good enough in the company of Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Solskjaer. His place in the team was often from the bench until Keane's demise. Sadly I don't think that Rooney's ability to ping a crossfield pass 60 yards is enough to convince as a midfield player. For sure you will get a performance out of Rooney in almost any position as his endeavour is not in doubt but in my opinion there are some fundamental flaws in his skill set that will prevent him developing a'la Scholes in CM.
ie - his short range passing is inaccurate
- he cannot turn play without touching the ball just by twisting his body.
- he receives the ball too often when not in an offensive position
- his first touch is not good enough

I'd much prefer to see Herrera play in that position. I quite like him. He looks to make forward passes unlike Carrick who has become very slow and static in his play. great defensively but not exactly Pirlo esque in his ability to launch attacks. Carrick also has never liked to play under pressure. I'll never forget seeing him hustled out of matches versus the better side. Yes he is classy player but for me his time is approaching over. Really he is a silkier and older version of Blind.

That I guess leaves Mata. I think we need to remember who let him go and where Chelsea now sit in the pecking order. Mourinho is smart, very, very tactically astute. He recognised that in the Premier League you need speed, power, strength and skill. He prefers athletes and work ethic over ability on the ball. Willian, Matic, Fabregas, Hazard.

Regardless of how effective Fellaini's appearance was on Sunday. He is nowhere near the class required for a top 6 side. He has to be moved on.

Having decimated the midfield. Attacking options leave you scratching your head. How can Di Maria (last seasons top assister in La Liga), Januzaj, Rvp and Falcao create so little. for me its simple. Their movement is predictable and the front two are too slow. It pains just how few shots we can even get. Watching spurs vs Arsenal sees the likes of Welbeck and boy wonder Kane creating chances on their own aswell as converting those made for them. granted Arsenal did not play well without Sanchez.

All in all its depressing watching Man United. With seemingly so much individual talent their effectiveness as a coherent team is pitiful. Its not that they arent trying but patently they don't yet understand what the coach is asking them to do. Liverpool, Soton, Arsenal, Tottenham and on yesterdays evidence Wham play a more expansive and effective style of play. we look like a club thta has lost its sense of identity and doesn't yet know what a new one should look like. It may be that a further clear out is required and that might include the manager.

Some valid points there. I would much rather see a side where midfield is stacked full of midfield players. Valencia for example, not a bloody right back. The guy has some serious pace and the work effort to go with it. Whack him on the wing and he will go up and down all day. Herrera and Mata need to feature. Rooney is not a midfielder. He is a striker and needs to be up there. Holding the ball, making runs, scoring goals.

Van Gaal has lost it a little bit I think. I swear, in fact I know I have put better teams together on FIFA. There are a number of players in that team that have no right to be there.

Fellanli, janujaz, Phil Jones to name a few.

If I was in charge, which to be honest I think I should be from my armchair, it would be a team similar to this.

Keeper: De Gea
Def: Rafael (RB), Smalling and Rojo (CB), Shaw (LB)
Mid: Blind (CDM), Valencia (RW), Herrera (LW, well left side of a diamond), Mata (CAM)
For: Rooney and Van Persie or Falcao. Depends who wants to turn up and play.

That guy was straight up ****. Ferguson definitely made some weird choices through in tenure. Where is BEBE nowadays :D

Did not stop posters on here (and other Manchester United forums, general footballing forums) think he was going to be the next big thing.

Why are you playing Valencia (a winger) in the centre of midfield?

RW stands for central midfield? You can have a wid-ish diamond ;).. Considering in my post I mentioned how he should be on the wing running up and down and I wouldn't then stick him in CM. Come on man, wake up.

Then it is not really a diamond? The formation becomes a back four, a midfielder, two wingers, a player behind two forwards. Playing a central midfielder out on the wing in Herrera then?.
