Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [9th - 13th April 2016]

As an outsider I find myself looking at the United team (and the last sub) thinking who??

It's just not what you expect looking at a United team.

It's like you see mata and think, maybe if we had a good footballer who drove the team forward instead with some end product, then perhaps it would be best part of 40 million spent.

Mata is not the problem at all, i'm not sure why you keep focusing on him, he's a good footballer, you just don't have a Kane or Vardy up front anymore. If you had Mata behind Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez back in the day. He'd have assists coming out his arse.

RedCafe servers are in flames.

Lol, its impressive that people can still get so infuriated by us after all the conditioning we have had these past 3 years. Its a broken record.

Why are we playing player x
Why are we playing player y in that position
Why hasn't LvG been sacked
What sort of retarded tactics are we employing

To be honest, Mata is often AWOL, I like him and wish he was better, but he's not been great for us.

Indeed. I've been expecting us to probably lose and be rubbish every game since at least November. Season has been a write off for a long time.

No if mata was able to create something on his own without relying on Ronaldo to bulldoze teams then we'd be better surely?

Tell me out of this team where do assists come from?

He's never going to drive forward with pace like Ronaldo, he's not that type of player. Much like Deco when he had Ronaldinho, Etoo and Messi infront of him. Different players have different styles of play. Its basic football psychology.

Not as much as our performances would suggest. Look at Liverpool. With a decent manager you are actually not a bad side and are playing good football.

Tottenham are the same. Good manager and suddenly they are doing well. Its stupid to suggest that because we have an awful manager that we need to replace the whole squad.

For one thing Spurs moved out a bunch of first team and squad players and have brought in key players. Kane, Aldy, Dele, Dier is effectively a new spine in use since Poch has taken over all of whom have made a huge difference this season.

Liverpool are better utilising players like Firm/Origi and have Sturridge back.

I think a different manager can improve Utd, but they still need drastic changes to the squad. Valencia is a joke, Carrick has been poor for 4 years, Rooney has been hurting the team for a few years, Mata is poor overall, a couple great games alongside 20 useless ones. CBs who can't stay fit. Utd need a new spine to the team as well which is by no means an insignificant change.

United's problems start at the back and permeate forward. Blind has played almost all season at CB. He's done ok but he's not really a centre back. Its a position that has needed addressed since Vidic and Ferdinand got past it. It still needs addressing.
Because of its relative wekness you end up with a player like Carrick as almost a centre back.He is totally spent now and never really had the grit for that position. compare the energy of players like Drinkwater, Alli, Kante, Dier to what United have typically in midfield - Carrick and Mata and Schneiderlin (Schweinstiger) - No pace whatsoever. No breaking into the box to support the attack. As a result there is a complete paucity of attacking force. Its shocking really.

Mata is another player who is a bit of a luxury when you need to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Against a team who leaves space and doesn't close players down, Carrick and Mata are great. Against anyone half decent they are ponderous and anonymous for the most part.

Our biggest issue is and has been all season a complete lack of shape or tactics. Every decent team in the league and in the world has a style of play. They attack a certain way, they defend well. We just hope the opposition don't turn up and that we outplay them man for man.

Leicester have done so well this season because they defend really well and play to their strengths. They don't try to be something they are not and they know exactly what to do all game long. Everyone knows their role and does it.

But we bought him having neither Ronaldo messy Ronaldinho or etoo. It's not his fault I blame whoever bought him in or plays him irrespective of those facts. He's the ultimate luxury player. We didn't need him. We needed someone with quality who could take the ball forward.

Same with limdgard he's probably good in the championship but champs league winner potential? His output is so low, I don't even know what he does every match.

Serious question, what happened to Darmian? A month or so into the season he was the best RB in the league according to some on here and well, he looks complete dog **** whenever he plays now.

Yea well this is the thing isn't. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Moyes signed both Felliani and Mata. He obviously didn't want Fell, he was far down the pecking order in terms of players that were on his transfer list, but Woodward messed things up a lot. When Mata was signed, it was with the obvious intention he could get some use out of him when a few forwards were signed in the summer. Moyes never got to the summer so we'll never know who he intended on bringing in. You have Martial who has played well in the forward position but isn't being played there. Nani, Hernandez, Welbeck....all these players sold when they could have played a vital role in this side. I doubt Moyes would ever of got rid of these guys, maybe Nani though. But Welbeck and Hernandez were rookie errors of judgement.
