Greenlizard0 Weekend (mid-week) Football Thread ** spoilers ** [29 - 30th January 2013]

The way I see the goal tonight, these are the choices De Gea had

1) Do as he did = goal
2) Go in and try to challenge for the ball, Rodriguez would have probably nipped the ball out of the way leading to a collision = Pen+Red+Goal
3) Go in and make himself big but not going in for the challenge. Could get knocked past him, but could also break up the move = Goal or Nothing happens.
4) Run and dive for the ball and try and punch it, or catch it = Misses it and goal/clears it or concedes a free-kick.

He should never have been put in that position in the first place anyway. Smalling stopped instead of continuing back as well, which could have stopped the goal.

It was a backpass he cant play it with his hands really, well catching anyway.

He could have got there first, but he stopped and jumped. But its all hypothetical.

Either way he wasn't very positive, he was waiting to react instead of going in there and clearing ball and man.

Yes so it was a decision making/judgement call that went wrong, nothing to do with his physique, unless of course you think he was scared?

Unsurprisingly Fergie's public stance on the goal is that the blame is with the back pass

Just woke up the house screaming at that goal.

I like that one.

He Baled us out of an embarrassing result.

If he goes in there takes the ball and the player, no ref gives it as a penalty.

What planet are you on at times. Deary Me. Of course if he clears out 'ball and man' as you so eloquently put it, the ref could have awarded a pen and at worse a pen and a red card. Given the pressure in the second half not only would we have been down to ten men then Citys point last night might have actually brought them closer to us.

In most cases Goalkeepers get coached to go in big and to jump so to avoid them being chipped. Why because most forwards get coached to try and chip it. Good goal and the forward used his brains to score the goal.

As has been said both by fans pundits and the manager he should never have been put in that position due to the back pass but hey why should that make one iota of difference when you constantly whine on about his physique and frame  Blinkered people are always going to be blinkered

99/100 if the keeper plays the ball he gets away with it. A large portion of the time he gets the free kick too. If he doesn't play the ball yes its a penalty but as long as he gets on the ball he's fine.

For me he was too stand offish and they scored because of it.

lot of talk of de gea getting blamed for carricks mistake but no talk of the great save he made for the southampton free kick later on.

united concede = de gea fault it seems.

Carrick was dreadful the whole game, starting with that back pass.

His composure was shot for the rest of the game.

He needed so much time on the ball the whole game, he was embarrassing at times.

Can't belive we almost lost to that Liverpool side, only 4 good players in their team and we basicaly handed them chance after chance to score. Sagna yet again completey cocking up to gift a goal (how many times has that happened?). What does Jenkinson have to do to get a game? Their other goal was very lucky deflected off Santos' nuts right into Hendersons path.

We need a left back, right back and a defensive midfielder today or we are going to miss out on 4th.

There were shades of when we played Athletic Bilbao in the second half last night. As soon as a team presses us hard we're all over the place. :(

The pitch didn't help.

Normally Ando is quite quick with his pass and move but for some reason both him and Carrick last night were dropping so deep there was hardly any forward penetration at all.
