Greenlizard0 Weekend (mid-week) Football Thread ** spoilers ** [29 - 30th January 2013]

Media? He's obviously got an incredible weak mentality but when his own manager was dropping him every other game last season what do you expect?

Not sure if there's a question there or not?

so you think there was no truth in the possibility that his team mates slaughtered him in the dressing room after the spurs game?

the media have played their part but they can't be blamed for his fragile frame and non commanding presence.

I think he probably did get a rollicking yes and I'm sure he wasn't alone, as for his physique that's rather irrelevant in regards to tonight's game (or the 'mistake' against Spurs)

The media have slaughtered him.

GKs have to be mad to take all the pressure of not ever making a mistake but De Gea has also had this huge transfer when he is still really young. He has also changed leagues at the same time.

All the GKs who I can think of as being exceptional when young stayed in the same league when starting out e.g. Casillas, Buffon, Neuer

I think De Gea is screwed because he hasn't adapted to the league yet and he is incredibly erratic in his performance and behaviour game to game. The pressure is on him because a lot of money has been spent on him but more than any other position, GK's cannot be carried while their potential develops.

Now Fergie has to think about dropping him for a few seasons to help him develop more and risk destroying his confidence or he keeps him in the team and risk losing points and still losing the lad's confidence during this process. How do you manage this situation successfully? I have NFI

Today's goal was not his fault and even his lack of attempt at a save is not the end of the world. The way he failed to catch that free kick though was more worrying. Little Things like that will cost points over a season.

Lol I know really, just think people seem to slate keeps for the oddest reasons. Schezney seems to be just lacking proper competition so he can get away with pretending to be an out field player when he should be crucified for it. De Gea is just under too much focus even though he's playing fine, couple of drops (that Boruc also made so I blame conditions a bit) but nothing mental that makes no sense.

it's highly relevant. if he had a few more kg's to him, players wouldn't go into challenges with him with such encouragement.

Right and what challenges did you see him fail to deal with in tonight's game or against Spurs?

The reason why De Gea is put under so much scrutiny is because a shed load was spent on him to bring him in as first choice and he is clearly not living up to his price tag.

Schezny, Boruc, Al Habsi et Al make mistakes but cost next to nothing.

This might sound mental but which first team GKs would you NOT choose over De Gea at the moment and only for the rest of the season? Mignolet, Frederick and Jaaskelainen for me.

they both led to goals. that may give you a clue.

Against Spurs De Gea's frame had nothing to do with the goal, he punched it exactly where he wanted to punch it and that was where the mistake was, just watch the replay's/Neville analysis of it if you disagree.

As for the goal tonight I can only assume you think if De Gea weighed a few more stone Rodriguez would have pulled out of trying to score? I disagree.

That and the fact he plays for Man Utd, if he played for Arsenal the witch hunt would be nowhere near as bad

Gomes got slaughtered for us. He was quality but made some silly errors that cost us point. He also made many unbelievable octopus arm saves. The got so destroyed in the press he was replaced by Friedel who was an utterly exceptional improvement.
