I will say this for Trump and all his hyperbole he is right the US is not competitive with China. That's got more to do with greed (business and the consumers) offshoring manufacturing for cheap stuff and more profits. I think ESG has had unintended consequences too, as the old saying goes "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" 
I'd be happy to go back to a slower pace of change and pay more for quality items that lasted longer. It would save huge amounts of waste, less mining, transportation and shift the emphasis from churning out tiny incremental changes and selling more and more stuff to consumers. It would be the greenest thing we could do, buy half as much stuff for twice the price and have it last twice as long or ideally be repairable.

I don't want to have a world where huge numbers of people have miserable lives because we can't make the changes needed to arrest the worst of climate change. By that wisdom why even bother because we will just adapt to extreme weather and losing large amounts of land mass to rising sea levels.
They haven't set a date for anything. Are you expecting to wake up one day and the ice caps to have disappeared and for your ankles to be wet? Good to know there are people who couldn't care less about future generation if it affects their lives a little though. Exactly the sort of people that have got us into this mess because who cares about anyone else if i'm alright?
You really need to relax a bit. I get the feeling there are a lot of people who never got to read Chicken Licken as a child. Trust me it will be fine, if it isn't we'll all be dead anyway. Why trust the doom-mongers over the optimists? Far more likely to be done in by an asteroid strike or a huge volcanic eruption or actually just run over by a car or the stress worrying about a what if... There is no "mess", cheer up, life is short, enjoy it before it's too late

When the doom mongers are thousands of scientists and the optimists are people who are just burying their heads in the sand and the extent of their argument is "don't worry, be happy" I know which people I will put more faith in...
"Faith" says it all really. Go and read the IPCC report, most definitely not about impending doom. I know many people say the fossil fuel industry has a financial interest in the status quo but fail to mention the green lobby is a huge industry with estimates in the trillions of dollars, it's the new gold rush. Scientists can be bought too, even if it means people quite directly being injured as a result. Everyone is following the money, that's not to say what is really going on climate-wise because no-one knows, they haven't got the foggiest how it all works. If they did they'd be able to clearly explain it which they can't as it's too vast and complex/chaotic a system. I'm absolutely confident they will not be able to influence it one iota, those who adapt will be fine. I'd be far more worried about the geoengineers trying to play god ushering in a new ice age, that would very quickly finish us off.
Burying your head in the sand with an "What can I do about it?" attitude because you feel you have no control over it has to be one of the single dumbest excuses ever wielded.
You literally have an impact on climate change every time you drive somewhere, order take-out or any one of the multitude of others activities you engage in which add to pollution / "Greenhouse Gasses".
Instead of continuing with such a farcical argument why not just admit "you don't care because it won't affect you" or the classic "I'm alright Jack" as so many others seem to that share your opinion(s).

Now you are getting into conspiracy theories. The green sector is worth billions and the traditional money and oil money is pouring into that sector now because they see the writing is on the wall. They have spent decades knowing full well the damage they are doing but couldn't have cared less because they made so much money. Now the public have turned on fossil fuels they are moving quite sensibly into renewables and other sectors. They still don't care about the environment but they do care about money and thats where the money is going.
There are I imagine (tens of) thousands of independent or education based scientists who are not being bribed or bought in any way shape or form so I don't think that argument holds any weight. Anyone who has been in the environmental sector for decades will tell you that humans have ravaged the planet and that we are killing the oceans, driving climate change and wiping out species. A lot of these people have spent their lives trying to prevent it and are often very poor because it doesn't pay well. They aren't lying.

No but he does have a point. Being clean is not economical and doesn't help with growth. Dem are the facts. He knows that while the West go green. China will carry on and become the number 1 global super power.
