Greta Thunberg

In her own words, “...I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean....”

She should be in school, not having to be shouting about climate change. No one is forcing her, it is an exaggerated statement, but the point she has tried to make has been successful, because people are talking about her and climate change.
If she is having her childhood stolen, it’s not by climate change, big corporations or Donald Trump, it’s by those closest to her, who are complicit in her being used as a pawn in their game.

There’s nothing wrong with protesting, but she should be doing it in a way that doesn’t compromise her childhood or her education, and doesn’t promote such a sense of bitterness to the world around her, that she seems to carry everywhere she goes.

I mean fair enough there's work to do on the environmental front but it's not as if we don't have a large modern relatively safe society catering for everyone's needs to show for it. She could have been born 500 years ago and her child hood would have been stolen by starvation, murder, rape, or the ******* plague

Or born 50 years ago and seen a really bad environment.

Smoke pollution. Smog so thick you could not see you hand in front of your face.

Snowfall 5 feet up your front door.

Her generation have the most stable, safest world to live in. Don't know they're born.

Do you honestly not understand the message?
The more I read this thread the more mentally backwards I start to think people are?
Maybe it's all the Brexit over the past 2 years?

I really CBA to defend her, cos I don't agree with the way the climate issue is being hijacked by left wing political groups. One she's clearly been manipulated to be a useful idiot for.

Sounds like a stuck record of a parrot.

I'd like to see her face in about 50 years time when the west has declined due to decades of schools teaching children how to be ideologues/political activists rather than to be focussed on an education and we will have less brilliant minds to actually invent greener technologies.

The biggest and 'lowest hanging fruit' for tackling climate change is to reverse global population growth. You can argues the toss about western countries having a per capita larger carbon footprint but ultimately the carbon capture and green technologies that are developed to reduce atmospheric CO2 will come from western universities and corporations... So, why doesn't Grerta go on a tour of the developing world with a "How DARE you breed like rabbits!!!" slogan. I wonder why?

100 years ago, yes, with the smog but 50 years ago in 1969 with various clean air acts and smokeless zones it was very rare.

Of the few bad winters I remember 1962/63 was the worst and that was not due to environmental issues, just a freak winter snowing from end of December to March.

Yes, cars and lorries were more polluting but there were fewer around. Yes people were more self reliant, they had to be. However all in all it was still good times.

Around here 1978 was the last year with 5 foot snow - but it happened a few times between ~1946 and 1978 and before that 1937-1940. I've never experienced smog type pollution around here (Somerset) aside from isolated extreme cases but I remember as a kid in the 80s a few times in London when the smog was bad though not like it was 50-100+ years ago and even on the better days photos would often come out with yellow murky skies even when it didn't look that bad in person (not due to camera tech).

100% and I come from Smoke on Trent and I've never known smog in the last 61 years.
I remember that winter, my Dad opened the door and had to dig through a massive snowdrift to get into the street.

I'm sure Greta agrees, considering she said endless growth is a fairytale.
She could say "the grass is green" and it would be heralded by her fans as some kind of divine revelation.

She's doing nothing but being angry, publicly, with a well-oiled marketing machine behind her.

This is why I don't get how much people seem to idolise her. She not finding solutions, she's not saying anything new, she just famous for being young and angry. And having a marketing teams pouring who knows how much money into pushing her as some kind of ambassador for the young. She's famous now basically for having epic tantrums. Great.

We want our economy to grow, which means more people, more food, more deforestation, more land, more waste, more power, more transport, etc.
We want to reduce the damage we do to the environment, which means wanting less of the above.
These are 2 of the biggest concerns we hear about on a daily basis through the news. Surely these 2 positions are contradictory to each other?
