Greta Thunberg

Got to say I agree and that's my problem with her. She comes across as though she is an authority on climate

Not sure where you get that impression, she said something along the lines of: "Don't listen to me, I'm a girl that should be in school. Listen to what your scientists are telling you"

Also a report in the sun saying crew are flying out to pilot the boat back, is in their own words "unconfirmed" so making stupid memes that aren't even accurate seems a bit weird.

I'm going to just sit back and wait until environmental campaigners actually do address the population issue and how they plan to curb the worlds obsession with continual growth.

I think i'll listen then, because it will be interesting to see how they deal with it without suggesting humans must die for climate change to be reversed/halted.

I remember doomsdayer Al Gore saying by 2014 the ice caps would melt and now look, even Greenlands glaciers are growing

Take a look at all the evidence, the trend is for melting. Summer minimums of arctic sea ice are way down on 1980s levels even, 1980s average on this date = 7,552,106 KM2, current extent = 4,234,869KM2

Greenland has seen massive ice loss around the coastal areas, with some gain inland but overall the trend is for increasing ice loss. One year it could increase, but the long term trend is for decline.

There is a clear linear trend with regards to polar ice cap melting and CO2 emissions, with three square metres of Arctic sea ice lost for every tonne of carbon dioxide emissions so if that trend continues a ice free summer arctic will happen in many of our lifetimes.

You may not like this girl but cherry picking one big of information and applying that to the entire world is stupid and wrong, the long term trend is for melting and rapid warming. 2019 arctic minimum has just passed and it was the second lowest in the satellite record and only the second time we have recorded less than 4,000,000 KM2 in extent.

Haha, that's great.

What amazes me is the people in this thread who think that the kids taking a day off school are fighting climate change.

Question to those people: how many kids taking a day off school would it take to fix the environment? :p

Perhaps they are trying to get the attention of world leaders who have actual power to change things.

But things are changing, you can't remove fossil fuels overnight otherwise civilisation would collapse, many millions would die.

Soros has too much money and is always funding groups to try and destroy America, it's his ultimate goal.

Things arent changing quickly enough, CO2 emissions are still rising year on year. Pretty much everywhere you look we are trashing the environment as well and we are already in the midst of a mass extinction event. Given how things are going, I see little hope anything even approaching the sort of changes needed will happen anytime soon. She is right, chasing endless growth is not sustainable.

I think the progress we are making already, always increasing renewable energy, electric cars, super efficient lighting / smart everything.

I don't think we need to do anything drastic, by the time it would be a problem I think the curve we are making already will counter it.

I hate people like her. They ignore what's being done and focus on the negatives - and provide no solutions.

It's like all the festivals where everyone is chirping up about saving the environment, yet happily throwing their plastic bottles and crap all over the fields.

Things are been done but we are not even close to taking proper measures especially as a number of special interests spend time and money saying it's all hooey. Little will be done whilst we still argue what's causing it.

I am not sure what solutions you expect a 16 year old to do, she's been on the scene for a few months. Can always rely on the internet to go straight to attack mode.

It's good, but remember that approximately 1/3rd of that is from burning stuff, though. CO2 is still an issue.

And without pressure, it won't keep improving at that rate. The Tory party cancelling all onshore wind projects as soon as they got a majority, for example. We also have the issue of declining Nuclear capacity, with planned power plants failing completely under the government's mismanagement - that will leave us relying on coal and gas much longer than planned.

Teenage angst. Sigh.

I'm not sure convincing a generation of school children they have absolutely no future is going to end well.

Yes, I'm aware that climate change is real, but I've never seen any realistic studies suggesting our civilisation is going to end because of it.

Further on this...

If we're to rely more on zero emission clean energy, then we need to build the infrastructure. Part of this is facilities like we have at Dinorwig - a pumped storage hydro power station - these allow storage of electricity from high output times (daylight, or favourable wind conditions etc) and release at times of high demand or low output.

All the "what about China" nonsense here and elsewhere in US Republican echo chambers ignores that China has a per-head CO2 output of about 2/5ths of USA and about the same as the UK. And they're investing in renewables at a rate the rest of the world should take notice of. Have a look at the list of pumped storage hydro plants under construction:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pumped-storage_hydroelectric_power_stations#Under_construction

They're doing something about it, but the rest of the world isn't. That's why we need Greta and people like her, and why the muppets with all the "what about China" bull-crap should be a little more reflective.

Worth remembering that much of China's CO2 is because it exports to the world - really, we're exporting our C)2 to them by producing our consumables there.

What about the 90% of plastic waste that ends up in the oceans coming from 5 countries in asia? CO2 isnt the only problem asia is causing.

Or it may be people just shrug there shoulders and think why bother when there are countries like India and China polluting the hell out of the planet and we dont see any real change taking place there.

Excuse me, but I've beeen putting all my cornflakes boxes in the recycling for years. The planet must be better off for it by now. Well.....my local council gets funny if I don't so it must be.

Some millennial saying that they won't have children until the environmental issue is resolved. Good luck with them. Darwin's evolution at it's best.
But it wont' take much some lunatic persuade the morons that need to mass suicide. Has happened numerous times in history. Let alone call for killing "the enemies".

The issue is that nobody is looking that she is funded by Soros. Yet she and her parents and close circle are running around with t-shirts promoting Antifa.
