Here's my crop, I don't know what type they are. The seeds came from Sainsbury's so nothing special.

Didn't read the whole thread, sorry if this is already posted.

Can you grow chillies all year?
How long will it take to grow some chillies?
Any links to good soil, chilli seeds?

thanks.

you can if you provide lighting and warmth

i started growing about april 1-3 and mine have just started flowering, prob 3 months or so from plant to chillies i would estimate(would guess it varies per type)

just get a bag of compost from b&q and get some pearlite for when you repot them in to single pots. for seeds, go to tesco buy a pack of chillies, eat them and keep the seeds :) is what i did.

thanks.

and if you have any more questions people are always happy to help :)

edit**

forgot to post what i came here to post :p

since its started being sunny and no chance of rain etc ive started putting my plants in the garden for a few hours and will start to do this more when they sprout more flowers(to help with polinating). our garden goes on the back of big fields for a few miles(see the bedroom view thread :) ) and can get a bit breazy which has caused one of the plants to fall over. so ive staked them all with kebab scewers but i was thinking that the pots might not be big enough now the plants are quite tall.

dont have a ruler so used a note for scale. are these pots big enough for a final pot? or will they need repotting again any time soon?

thanks.

Some may say the tubs they are in are overkill but hey thats what they are in.

They are much bigger than that now, i will get pictures to update when i get home. both have plenty flowers on them

Wow nice to see this thread still going, it inspired me to try and grow my own chillies when it was only two pages long. I have had some luck ;p In March I grew from seed - New Mexico Twilights, Ring of fire, Mixed Twilights, Chinese Pot and Bhut Jolakia. The only seeds which did not germinate were the Bhut Jolakias and I have read that these are harder to germinate so wasnt too surprised.
I started them all in one huge pot which sat in my computer room (nice and warm) then transfered them to individual pots when the plants reached about 3cm. All the plants then went on to windowsills until they reached about 8inches when I moved them outside. They have been outside for a good 7 weeks now.

Took some pictures:

This attempt at growing chillies was more of an experiment to see how successfull I would be with the germinating/growing outside without greenhouse etc... basically just plant them and stick them outside to see how well they would do. I will post some more pics in a few months when there are chillies on them.

For anyone growing chillies in the open garden get yourselves some slug pellets. It creates a good barrier between the pots and the slugs. After the first 2 nights of putting slug pellets out they managed to kill 12 snails/slugs.

Chilli Experts: I still have some Bhut Jolakia seeds left, is it too late in the year to have another attempt to grow them ??

no, not in this country. they would probably survive if you started them indoors and planted them out when they were bigger but they wouldnt grow much and you wouldnt get any fruit.

Thats not true, once you have germinated the seeds and started the plants most chillies will grow fine outside in this country and you should still get some fruit unless we get a particularly harsh summer. They won't however survive the winter so you will have to re-plant next year and you won't get as much fruit as you will growing them in more controlled conditions inside.

My chillies have been growing on a table in my bay window for a good few months now and the buds are just about ready to turn into flowers. I've only got three plants left from the four seeds I germinated as one died during it's initial pot transfer but they should still give me plenty of fruit.

You could try - they need 27-30 degC to germinate then you can reduce the temps. The problem is that Bhuts and Nagas take a while to get ripe fruit so you may find that you need them indoors in August or later to finish the fruit.

Only way to know - try it :D

you obviously dont live up north, nowt grows outside here:p

Get a growhouse and put them in there and when its sunny they shoot up, mine havd went mental since moving them out there. Temps up to 45 when its really hot seem to love it and it keeps the wind and rain off them. Now have about 8 plants plus 3 Big Jim chillis and around 4 pepper plants plus tomoatos and all sorts, its quite addictive!

Hi I don't know what type of plants I have got 6 plants but all have chillis coming about 1 inch in lenth and still green. When is the best time to pick them and can you pickle them And how? Cheers

As they ripen, they'll progressively have more taste and less sappy taste.
Probably worth leaving them until one or two start showing signs of ripening to red, then harvest the green ones.

Just use a pair of sharp scissors to cut the chilli off.

Well a guy was to collect the nagas but failed to. One thing I've noticed with experimenting with water and food - the nagas require more water when flowering to stop then dropping the flowers and allowing the flowers to mature to the point the stamen produce pollen.
