Noticed a few more on some of the other plants starting to grow :D Not the best picture I know but it was on my compact...

after my attack of green fly, which i think i have halted now, a few leaves have dropped off and a lot of the newer growth is wrinkled up from the greenfly.

will it be ok to trim these off?

heres a pic

I've been following this thread with interest for a little while now - here's my 3 chilli plants grown from seeds, they've been loving the wet and sunny weather recently and some of the chillis have put on a real spurt :)

Hi,
I have been reading this thread with interest and hope that you don't mind me asking a question.

I have for the first time grown a chili plant.;) It now has 5 chilis on and needs repotting. I have been to the garden centre to buy a growbag but the ones I have seen are huge and this is just one plant.

Can I use some of the houseplant growing soil that I have left over from repotting my houseplants?

Is it safe to use or will it make my chilis inedible?

Thank you;)

Any general soil would be ok i would have thought, multipurpose stuff.

Don't need a grow bag just grab a large pot from asda or somewhere and place it somewhere where it is sunny usually.

If it has been growing indoors, and you want it outside then u need to ween it out. What i mean by this is place it outside for 1 hour then next day 2 hrs, etc etc. For a week or two. To strength it up for the random weather.

Hi Skeeter,

Thanks for the reply. I have penty of experience growing houseplants but I have never grown veggies or fruit. I really have no idea about what goes into compost and thought that there could be something deadly in houseplant soil.

It won't be going outside as I haven't a garden but it seems happy on the windowsill. I have been pollinating it myself with a cotton bud and so far it has grown 5 chilis. Not many I know, but I am not a bee!

Will it produce flowers all year round?

One thing i have noticed is, on the bottom of the chilli there is like a little stigma thing, which was part of the flower, i have picked them off on many of them, now they are not turning red. and they are some of the oldest chillis on the plant

none of my chillies have them on and are still ripening. they took about 4 weeks from being fully grown to start ripening.

Don't forget each fruit ripens differently - some ripen from the inside out other top to bottom etc.

The stigma has done it's job once the fruit sets.

Basically a cellular tube breaks out of the pollen and quickly works it's way down a set of canals in the stigma. The tube then transfers the male cells from the pollen to the fruit. there's a multitude of these canals hence a good dusting of pollen is best if you want good fertile seeds from it.
Once fertilisation has started the flower sets fruit and the tubes, pollen and stigma are nolonger needed - hence a this stage if the stigma falls off it will have no impact on your ripening!

FishFingers, would enjoy some pics of ur stuff if you can. :)

Heres the red chilis that we have growing, have a few come through and still some to turn.

The red peppers seem to have clumped together, but still growing and turning though a little warped :)

The tomato plant is a little gangly to say the least it stretches up to the ceiling and there are a few bunches (is that the right term) of tomatoes, 8 - 10 strong still green so may turn any week now. The image is of our single red tom.

First time ive ever attempted to grow any veg so any feedback or tips is appreciated for how to do it better next time, remembering that we are in a flat and have no greenhouse or non-communial garden, basically we have window sills! :D

Lovely pics mate.

The toms u can cut the top off and should stop growing tho becareful of sneaky boogers lol that grow from sides if u dont inspect the plant all the time. I have trimmed most of the leaf branches off mine because there gone funny like urs seem to be doing a bit, its going ok but my prob now is root bound i think so thats why mine isnt doing as good as it was.

Chillis looking good too. Maybe trim a few leaves (better to turn the plant tho now and then) i duno so the sun can reach the fruit maybe i duno. Just an idea.

Btw mate im also in a flat, no garden etc so just windowcills too. :)

Doing good tho. Plants are enjoying the sun so far. :)
