Growing Vegetables

At the mo we have got spuds, onion, lettuce, beetroot, beans, peas and carrots on the go.
If we can stop the chickens getting in the patch and eating as much as they can we shold have a decent crop :)

Apart from that we have a large grape vine (of which, if it gives a normal crop, half will be used to make wine for the first time this year), gooseberry bush and blackberry bushes in the garden.

We don't have a garden but we've got a few bits on the balcony in pots. Mainly herbs this year. Several types of mint, flat leaf and curly leaf parsley, lavendar, rosemary, sage, chives, camomile and rocket. Then we've got a red chilli plant, two tumbler cherry tomatoes in a hanging basket and strawberries which are doing well this year. With all the plants and flowers there's not much space to walk, but it's good to be able to eat most of the garden :D

Last year we had more cherry toms and courgette in a planter outside and tried an aubergine, green chilli and red pepper indoors but they got destroyed by spider mite which we couldn't get rid of. The strawbs didn't do too well last year either. We transferred them from big pots into a tiered strawberry pot and with the bad weather they all died. Swapped that pot to herbs this year and the strawbs back in pots and it works much better.

Do [aubergines] need a greenhouse? or do they just grow.

Ideally a greenhouse but I had them under a glass cloche, which was just panes from the old greenhouse propped together. We're right down on the Sussex coast which helps. You could probably do them in a mini greenhouse or under a polytunnel. The smaller varieties don't need that much height and are quite compact, the fruit is much smaller but very tasty.

When I moved into my house last year there was a bit of waste land so I grew some veggies while I worked out what to do with the land - it is now bigger and has/will have even more veggies. 200 onions in so far (not all will grow and they will go in my house, lasagne, bolignase, curry, cottage pie...) plus will be leeks, runner beans and sweetcorn in the next week or so...yum!

i have applied for an allotment in southampton
prices range from £3-8 per 'rod' for the two I am on the waiting list for (from £33 for an average plot)

with a wait that looks like it will be at least 2 years (some say up to 5!!) i may well be in a house with a veg friendly garden before i get it!!

dont think ill bother with an alotment, ive heared its abotu 15quid for the ones i can see out my window. But its a bit later into it all now, and i finish uni this time next year.

If/when i get a flat though i will defo put my name down.

Have also heared that waiting times are getting sillystupid also, some places not taking names due to a 10 yr wait :/

Im glad someone else started tis thread, i was to much of a sissy.

Ive currently got 6 tomatoe plants 2 cucumber plants and a rake of carrots, Got potatoes growing in nice deep buckets as the Vegitable plot is going to take a lot of work to prepair so got untill next year to prep it now,

Im currently using my Uncles gren house which is 20ft by 10 ft long its geat, go so much planed for next year.

His garden has Cherry trees apple trees, goosbery bushes and a few raspberry Kanes.

He has just under 3 acres of land that cant be built on but has some of the best soil i have seen.

Im begining to think i should start a thread about my project of becoming self sufficient in growing veg and fruit

tip: Label all your seeds!

We have like 4 grow bags and a window sill plastic box with around 20 clumps of pete in.

Got so much stuff starting to grow and we forgot to put name tabs on them. Haha

Get your name down now then. By the time you get a flat you'll have moved up the list a bit. They've closed the waiting list here as there were already too many people on it. We were luck though & only had to wait about 5 months, though that was 3 years ago.

Get pics and put on here, a lot of them are realy simple to identify with the leaves

No one keeping this thread going? Today me and the missus went and cleared out plot at my uncles so we can get it realy prepaired for next year, soil is realy realy good uop there.

I bought a whack of crops on saturday for in the green house so all is looking good

i have a question if anyone knows. .

raspberry, blackberry, blackcurrant

do they need to be planted in the ground or is large pots ok ?

do they need to go out doors or in the greenhouse ?

thanks

I've got loads on the go - sweetcorn, chillies, runner beans, climbing beans, aubergines, yellow courgettes, patty pans, butternut squash, tomatoes, garlic, cucumber and the old dear has a load of peas, broad beans, strabberries and potatoes.

You won't get fresher than home grown. :D

Last year I grew the seasons potatos in some big pots, as I knew I was going to move house during the growing. Came out perfect :D Also did some beans in a similar way, but the bugs got to them a bit more. I also had some lettuce varieties in little trays, and each salad I could just pick a bit, and the next time it would have grown back. Brilliant!

Hopefully I can have a house soon with a decent garden, and actually get some good food growing! My grandfather sadly gave up his allotment last month as he can no longer manage it. I would have loved to have taken it on if I still lived up that way.

You can grow raspberries in containers outdoors so I'd imagine you can do blackberries too as they're the same family. They'll probably need more training than the raspberries though as they grow a lot wilder. My blackcurrant bushes are pretty compact so they'd almost certainly be fine in pots. Just make sure you get the right compost & a good sunny location & you should be ok for all three.

Blueberries do well in pots too.

This year we're trying from seed:

Butternut squash
Courgettes
Tomatoes
Spring onions
Potatoes

Currently have 4 (count em!) figs on our fig plant, which will be out first crop. Blueberry doesn't look like it's doing much. Herb garden and rhubarb is going well.

Would love to have more space for onions and other veggies. Have managed to squeeze in 4 grow bags in this year.
