Growing Vegetables

Me and the Mrs have just started this weekend. First time i have ever done it but it looks good. :D

We have got Potatoes, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Carrots, Parsnip, Onions, Spring onions, lettuce, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Mint, Rubarb and strawberrys, basically all the stuff we use on a regular basis but pay Tesco for :)

i have a question if anyone knows. .

raspberry, blackberry, blackcurrant

do they need to be planted in the ground or is large pots ok ?

do they need to go out doors or in the greenhouse ?

thanks

Pending the pot is large enough and you have Kanes to keep them upright you should be ok, Key factor is always warm and moist, I know thats going to get slaughtered but its true

Wow, only just found this thread!

I "converted" a bed in our garden last year, by that I mean I spent a week weeding and fencing it off so the dog can't **** in it!

Last year I grew radishs - french variety, not the tiny round things that pass for radishes in this country - and beans, was a great success. Haven't planted anything this year yet, although I noticed the supermarket has started selling seeds. Is it safe to buy seeds from the supermarket? or is it better to buy them over the net from a decent gardening centre?

I need to find a decent website/book that can tell me what to plant and when, from what I've read it's too late to start potatos now?

I have an awesome book which sounds like being exactly what you need.

Will dig it out tonight as I can't remember it's name.

im wanting to grow some veg like carrots, potatoes, onions, is it to late to start now?

To start from seed yes, From plant no. You will be surprised if you go to the likes of Homebase you can get plants from 99p

I started just recently and notice a difference between my seeded plants and pregrown ones.

You can only give it a try, im on a learning curve as i have never done it before.

Next year i intend on growing a lot of stuff, i want to extend veg plot from 10ft x 8ft to about 20ft x 8ft

Oh also, im trying to grow 3 Goosberry bushes from cuttings, heres hoping they work.

Probably too late for potatoes now unless you can find some pre-chitted ones. Carrots are fine though and just about enough time for onions. You should be able to find some trays of seedlings in your garden centre or get them sown yourself under glass.

My onions were sown last week but haven't come up yet. Mind you, I did the toms nearly two weeks ago and I haven't seen a thing of them yet. I'm beginning to think they've failed :( Broccoli and cabbages are starting to sprout though :D.

I've got and can reccomend these:
The Allotment Book - AM Clevely
Allotment Gardening: An organic guide for beginners - Susan Berger
Plus a couple of other general veg growing books & guides.

I am growing sweetcorns again this year. Started on the window sill, put them in last saturday and they are already poking through. Hoping for 18 this year, take up a lot of space though. Probably runner beans as well if I get time.

One of my cucumber plants appear to have comited suicide, both germinated same couple of days, watered same times and same amounts, left in same temps and light but one has gone lip and started to wilt. Hope it doesnt die.

My girlfriend and I have 5 raised beds and a polytunnel, We keep the tomatoes, chillis, strawberries and salad leaves in it. We have radish, carrots, beets, potatoes, french beans, runner beans, garlic and onions planted in the beds so far. We've got courgette's, rhubarb, gooseberries and raspberries outside the beds. We'll fill the last beds with herbs mostly.

Last year was a big experiment for us and we're really pushing the boat out this year.

What has everyone been up to this week end on the ole plots?

We went and turned ours over again and got a lot of the finer roots out, soil was realy realy fine even after all the rain we had, put a 3 foot fence round it to give general outline, and cut down an imposing coniferus tree that blocked light, used the tree to make the posts for the corners and branches for the stakes to keep wire up.

So far on the plot i have spent no moneys and its ready for planting, with i being so late in the year i have decided to leave it untill next year and work in thisyears old grow bags so the soil is even better.

All the plants i have in the house have realy come on so far and are all looking realy healthy,

Spuds in the Jardin seam to be slowly getting there.

Have also considered the old fartaholicks favourite and plant some brussel sprouts but looking at it i would only need one plant as they have loads on them

Courgettes have started to come up in my mini-greenhouse, as have onions, cucumber, sprouts, cabbage & leeks. Only 2 of the 24 tomatoes have germinated yet though and it's been nearly three weeks :(. No sign of the sunflowers either.

Potatoes are up on the allotment & I cut the grass & tidies up round the fruit bushes. No more groundwork done on the lottie this weekend as I've been digging tree stumps out of the garden. I should be up there all day Wed as long as work & the weather play ball and that should see the big veg plot completely dug over, deweeded and fed with last years compost. Got to get that done before anything else can go ahead.

Plenty going on down your way, i had to give up yesterday as the rain came on and i was soaked through, would have carried on but was hiking up in the highlands on saturday and got caught in a snow storm n frozen, was knee deep in snow at one point.
Hope weather holds out for you.

I might give the sun flowers a bash i love roasted sunflower seeds,

We are eagerly trying to grow monkey puzzle trees for the garden but dont seam to be germinating.

Also had to go change a pane on the green house as it cracked and was letting in cold and weet, needless to say highest temp was still 41 degrees in direct sun inside the green house.

most of our grow bags have started to germinate quite well :D

we have 4 bags (and dont know wtf is in what, good old students aye!), cucumbers, jalapenos, cabbage, tomatos, spring onions etc are all growing above soil now! very exciting :D haha. The mustard seeds are going crazy too, taken over one part of the garden.

We have some sunflowers too :) They kind of died off when we planted them from a pot inside to the ground, but the stems are hardening and growning again now slowly :) A good 5 or so inches

Got plenty more done in the garden again this weekend. Looking forward to a good crop of vegetables come summer :).

I really want an allotment. I'm on a waiting list but desperately want to get one before autumn so I can dig it over, and prepare it for next spring.

I can sympathise with you i moved into a house with my gf and her dad and he has it all concrete so just lucky my uncle said we can grow stuff up his aslong as we give him a few Vegies.

dont know wtf is in what

If they have leaves on them get pics on ehre try name what you have lol

We havent planted anything this year and fear it may be too late for some stuff.
Garden isnt really sorted yet - used to be a 6 foot high load of brambles, but now has frsprouting grass seeds and an an actual layout! :D

Wanted raised beds at the far end, with "pretty" flowers down the right hand side, a lawn that looks like the letter "P" on the left, with a "?" shaped path leading down the garden, and finally a waist level herb garden opposite the kitchen window :)

We do however have a horrible problem with slugs and snails where we are, though we do have the benefit of a south facing garden.

Next door might be getting rid of their greenhouse... so I might grab it if they don't want it.

This might be userful for some: http://www.bbc.co.uk/digin/
