GT200 GTX280/260 "official specs"

I thought the conversion from dollars to pounds was pretty good for a change. Everybody forget import duty and VAT?

Normally you just change the dollar signs to pounds :p

Anyway we have all been spoilt by cheap gfx prices in the last year.

I paid £400 for a x800xt pe 4 years ago so with inflation/cost of living that is about £450-£470 in todays money.

I paid £250 for 1 Tsueng Labs 1mb gfx card in 1993 which is about £600 in todays money

Also weren't 8800GTX cards over £400 when they came out? And weren't people still buying Ultras for £400+ up to about 6 months ago?

However, since I bought a 8800GTS G92 for £120 I am not prepared to pay £450 for a card again unless it is going to give me at minimum 2-3 times the performance of my G92 which I beleive this won't??????

Realistically, I think the age of £400 graphics cards is coming to an end. I don't think NV can get away with it much longer if ATi keeps to its policy of not selling any graphics card for over $500. People won;t buy NV basically on principal if they keep their prices sky high.

when ever a new card which is top end come out, ITS ALWAYS near the £500 mark.

I dont see it being different this time round.

TBH the only ones worth those prices were the 9800pro and the 8800GTX

Do you mean for NV specifically? Because when the 3870X2 came out, it topped the GTX and ultra, yet could be found for £250 almost from release.

Hope so, since the 3870/gt prices have drops quite a bit on most cards

Definitely. Even though the last year has been pretty stale technology wise, a benchmark for performance/cost has been set. The 3870s/8800GTs are the best graphics cards we've ever had purely on a cost/performance ratio. So even though we've had no new tech, a good few standards have been set where people won't expect any less in the future.

I think so too, where the 3850 and above can give you quite good gameplay for the money unless you got a large screen then even a gts is coming down in pricel

I think it is current AMD/ATI strategy to capture those who will simply be interested in better performance than what they have already got- leaving those who can afford it to go better-not the majority (I'm afraid). Makes sense.

I agree and that what i am hoping to do, if i was using a higher res screen then maybe i get a 260/280/4870x2 but i am not if the 4870 is cheaper than the 260 and about as fast as a gx2 then i get one.

And me, I think Nvidia will take a pounding in the reviews if the 4870 manages descent performance. I doubt they plan on shifting that many 280 GTX cards though, atleast in the begining. Even on enthusiast sites like this one, how many of us actually own a 9800GX2? Relativly few. Therefor they will need to rely on there 260 GTX, and from my understanding that card is quite unremarkable :\ Things I have read suggest the 4870 could beat that in performance and undercut it in price. If that is the case can there brand name really stand up to that kind of thrashing?

Infact that brings me to my other point. I think Nvidia are taking somewhat of a risk in that they want to see if there reputation thats been in overdrive since G80 can nab them sales from those of us who either arent that concerned about price and, more likely, the fanboys :).

Is the 9800GT yet another Nvidia renaming job? If it is, there taking a massive risk in that there leaving the mid/high end to ATi, ASSUMING the 4850/70 live up to what we believe to be true of them.

I gotta disagree there :D, I've got a 24 inch screen, and I've had a 2900 and 3870X2, they were both more than capable at 1920x1200 even with some AA.
