GT200 GTX280/260 "official specs"

Ive seen a price drop already :p cant say where but the Point of View GTX280 was £418 yesterday and is now £399 today!!

Tempting at sub-£400...

But I will wait for the 55nm version anyway. Don't really have enough time to play with the beast to justify dropping £400 on it at a time when money is tight :(

Doubt it, but then you're bound to have some kind of CrossFire-enabled motherboard (Intel or AMD) unless you know you specifically bought an nVidia chipset just so you can do SLi.

I have a Intel P35 mobo so if I would want a Xfire setup that would mean a different mobo as well so it is not cheaper for everyone.

What TweakTown has said regarding HD 4850.

See, I’m probably not allowed to say this, but it helps me put my point across a bit better. The GTX 280 is slower than a pair of CrossFired 4850s for the most part; it’s also $250 AUD dearer. The price on the HD 4850 in AUD is around $250, so $500 for a pair while the GTX 280 is starting at $750. So, a pair of 4850s isn’t enough to drag me away from my consoles, but the 4870s should if the 4850 is anything to go by. The best thing about them however is that the value these cards will offer is nothing short of astonishing.

As frustrated at NVIDIA as I am, who has really annoyed me is ATI. The fact that the NDA has been pushed back is just killing me. Knowing the results on the HD 4850 has completely changed my outlook on the GTX 280. At the moment, a lot of review websites have compared the GTX 280 to the 9800 GX2 and they see the performance being similar with a single core, then they see the new technology that’s implemented into the card and find it all to be pretty amazing. Performance talks though, and if these people had seen the HD 4850 run in CrossFire, I don’t doubt that their opinion on the cards would have likely changed.

Does the 'cheaper' quote also include the cost of the mobo?

Yes.

4850 predicted cost ~£130

2 x 4850 = £260

So that gives you £140 to play with for a mobo, so even if you went with a X48 you could still do it cheaper than a GTX 280.

If you went with a basic P45 mobo for ~£85 you have a total cost of:

£260+£85 = £345

A good £55 saving over the cheapest GTX 280...

And a nice overclocking motherboard as well in the bargain. ;)

Wonder when the price drops kick in as already you can get a 280 for £399 and Fudzilla say it should be dropping again shortly.

OCUK do their this week only later today so hopefully the 280 is part of those reductions.

This Week Only! GTX 280 £20 cheaper, just you wait

EDIT: TWO already updated today, no GTX 280s on there, what a surprise :D

Just conjecturing here, but my m/b has one 16x PCI-E slot and one 8x PCI-E slot, I think, heres the information from the site, I'm not sure how to quite read it,

Expansion Capabilities Two PCI Conventional bus add-in card connectors (SMBus routed to both PCI Conventional bus add-in card connectors)
One Primary PCI Express* x16 (electrical x16 or x8) bus add-in card connector
One Secondary PCI Express* x16 (electrical x8) bus add-in card connector
One PCI Express* x16 (electrical x4) bus add-in card connector

But basically could I run CF 4850's on my board ?, it says it's CF compatible but it's an old board and these new cards my require more bandwidth.
