GT86/GR86/BRZ

I've just test driven an S3 yesterday (Going from 86 to this come August time because I need a bigger car).

Can say that the 86 is definitely a completely different car and feels better on the country roads by far, but overall an S3 is comfier, quicker and more spacious.

Ideal world I'd love to keep the 86 as a weekend car but the S3 makes a better daily so I'm gonna have to sell up and go for one. But all in all, I can say I'll be buying another 86 after a year or two and the S3 will be gone.

Enjoy the understeer :D

When you get back in a gt86 it will feel so agile and precise in comparison. Also you'll miss the tight turning circle and the ability to do 1 point turns :p

I'll try! :D

Could already tell how much higher the centre of gravity is compared to the 86! Didn't want to push it too much on the test drive so wonder what the understeer will be like :P

I think if I was gonna have a hatchback it would be the Merc a45. I looked at a Golf R but the staff at the dealership were very unfriendly, and never called back to arrange a test-drive.

I looked at both the A45 AMG & Golf R however I feel like the S3's interior is built nicer than the Golf R and I've never been a fan of Merc interiors so that one went quickly out the window :p

Had to use my 86 like a van today and lug 12 rolls of turf in the back of it. Needless to say it as very full and very muddy but nothing an old duvet cover didn't sort! Quick hover out and it's cleaner than before! :) Suspension felt very soft, I kinda liked it!

Enjoy it while you can mate! Still getting an S3 next?

Will definitely be enjoying the last few weeks with it! Planning on taking it for a loong drive out in the country

And S3 is still the plan :) Spotted a nice one that's come up but the seats have a disgusting half-red-leather design and put me off completely. Still plenty of time to find a decent one!

Nah not yet, will probably get them done around the same time as the engine recall on the 22nd of next month. They aren't scraping or squeeking so I should be ok for a while yet.

I like the PS4 tires. I've now gone on some b roads and a dual carrigeway and they feel really good. And it now grips on a few of the corners near my house where I would normally lose the back end. So that's a definate improvement on the stock ones.

Will be fairly noticeable with new ones on I'd imagine! And tyres I couldn't believe the change when I put some PS4's on mine, night and day difference, really transforms the handling :)

Dropped off my car and picked up my Corolla Courtesy Car today. I must say it's a great car to drive. Very different style of driving needed but once you get used to it (only took me around 10 minutes) it's so comfy and quiet.

Averaging 66mpg, not too shabby. It's the 1.8 Hybrid. It's nippy when you floor it but very dosile when you're <50% throttle, my only peeve with this thing is the fact the throttle above 40mph feels like it's on or off, with very little inbetween.

The Corolla looks quite nice, can they be driven in just electric mode?

Can initiate "EV" Mode through a button just next to the Driving Mode switch (Sport, Normal or Eco). Up to about 35 it's fully electric then it forces the petrol engine to kick in to get any faster. You can only enter this mode if the battery is more than 60% charged from what I can tell.

Overall it's a pretty well designed system, engine only kicking in when the battery is low or if throttle is more than ~50%

I feel like a sporty version of the car would have to be completely revamped as it feels very high up and boat-like. It seems to grip pretty well but it gives you a bit of a sense of it being like a barge.

Ugh... hybrid/electric cars..
Someone wake me up when they are 500kilo lighter, the weight kills any notion of them becoming "fun"

To be fair, the Corolla is only 25kg heavier than the 86. Only with a lot more of a spongey suspension. Can tell the battery is in the back, it feels like it has a pretty 50:50 weight distribution.

Yea it's a shame you can't make the EV side more aggressive and have it stack on more performance instead of be an eco thing. It's probably why they locked down the ECU or everyone would be doing it :/

Definitely, it has a lot of "go" up til 30 mph then it struggles... a lot. :P

Recall done. Overall time 2.5 days.

Picking my 86 back up tomorrow. Fingers, legs, toes, arms and everything else crossed whilst touching wood that there's no issues. Can't wait to get rid of this Corolla now. Good car but utterly lifeless and soul draining to drive.

Was advised that the run in period is just about a minute of idle for the valve springs to settle and then that's that.

Picked up my car only to find it had no coolant to be seen in the bottle... A quick boot-off in the dealership and it's been filled. Whether this was an airlock as they tried to pin it to or not I don't know, because going from Full to the bottle being bone dry seems a damn lot to me. They've now topped it up to 3" over full so going to have to find a way to get some of that out..

Other than that, it seems to have a bit of a lifter tick noise which I'm going to keep an eye on. But no knocking or anything so far. £335 cost for the 6 Year service. £91 for spark plugs, however much for rear diff oil and £171 labour...

Day 1 Summary time:

So, the issues/annoyances I have experienced so far are listed below:
  1. Coolant was nowhere to be seen, supposedly due to an airlock. Which absolutely should have been checked by themselves before handing the car back to me.
  2. Once I brought this up, they took the car in to "have a look" and dropped it off outside the door for me. Not being absolutely satisfied I decided to give it another check. It was now 3-4" above the "FULL" marker.
  3. Underside of the bonnet covered in oil/dirt with some scratching where paint has been removed. Presuming they have put this on the floor somewhere whilst they worked on the car.
  4. Increased noise from injectors or valves, sounds like tappets.
  5. Throttle Body/Inlet Manifold making loud electrical whine and scraping noise when actuating the throttle. May be there from usual but definitely comes across as being louder.
  6. Airbox no longer seems fully connected to the front scoop under the bumper.
  7. Air Filter has not been changed in the £335 service. Still dirty and remains in the car, this is in the service guidelines as due replacement every 3 Years/30k. This is the 6 Year service so should have been replaced.
  8. Car has been "Washed" and came out a lot dirtier than when I brought it in.
  9. Charged £171 labour for Rear Differential Oil which should be changed every 20k/4 Year. It's on 42k so should have been changed, but this is not on the description of "Goods / Services", rather just an Oil Filter, Spark Plugs and Screenwash that I didn't ask for.
Not happy at all and need to think about writing a complaint asking for a portion, if not all of my money back. Will be going straight to head office should I receive nothing that satisfies me. Considering these are things I have found on day one I dread to think if there's anything else that may have been missed. Especially given the amount of engines that have gone bang after this.

Overall, if anyones near Newcastle/Sunderland area. Do not take your car to Toyota Wearside.

The year 6 service should include air filter, brake fluid, rear diff oil, oil and filter change and spark plugs for £400, so really you've only saved £65.

Invoice shows:
£9.52 Oil Filter
£1.20 Screenwash (Which hasn't even been topped up, still remains on the "LOW" marker on the dipstick)
£91.20 4x Spark Plugs
£171.23 Labour for "Full Service" (More like 1/3 Service)

No sign of Diff Oil which should have been included.

Currently writing up a complaint and asking for a refund.

Probably skipped the dif oil thinking no one will notice. But it's an LSD so you can't really get away with ignoring it.

Definitely. I've sent off my rather long worded email to the service manager I was dealing with, the guy who signed off my recall letter and the branches general manager. Hopefully that gets me somewhere, if not, it's going to head office.

Not sure if I'd trust them to change the diff oil should they request I bring the car in for it to be done. I feel like should I annoy them they may not take kindly if my engine goes bang.

Received a very sympathetic call this morning from the Aftersales Manager of the dealership.

Car is going back in on Tuesday morning for me to have a chat with the mechanic and manager where I can discuss what I want sorting. They are then going to give me a courtesy car and completely re-do the 6 Year Service (apart from spark plugs).

Interested to see how this goes, may restore a bit of faith in them. Time will tell

Just dreading being stuck with the Corolla again :( Just want to take my car for a drive knowing it's not going to go pop!

Ok according to demon tweeks its the FCP1639H I need.

Ferodo DS2500 Brake Pads
Front Pad Set - Sumitomo Caliper
£159.85

If someone can confirm that's correct I can order them tomorrow.

I believe that's right yeah. You can also get them from ebay for £140 I believe off WG Motorparts :)

My car's been listed for sale today. Found a lovely S3, just hoping I can be the first to nab it as the dealership selling has a first come first serve policy in which there's no reserving a vehicle :)
