GTA IV ads pulled down in US

I have to agree with Zefan here, it's marketing to an audience far younger than it's rated for, and it's bang out of order. People wonder we have so many issues with games and rating systems, and ignorant parents and such, yet here we are, complaining about adverts for GTA4 that are being targeted towards children being removed.

Crazy world.

Assumption is the mother of all **** ups. You are assuming gamers are kids. The average X360 owner is 22, average PS3 owner is 23 and average PC gamer is 25. Last I checked GTA wasn't available on Leapfrog.

So I'm 17 and I wouldn't be allowed to buy GTA IV? What kind of ******** is that ?
I've played GTA III when I was 11 or 12, I see no remote reason why a kid aged 10 or 11 can't play gta.

The game itself isn't that much of an issue (at least for me), advertising the game is much more risky. Some people have the naive opinion that advertising merely advertises the product, I can understand why with the title advertising, but it isn't as simple as that. Without ever playing the game (or using the product in question) advertising creates a warped image of our society. Models for instance project an unrealistic image of the perfect woman. Dove tried to step in and do the honorable thing on this issue as you might remember (click). It's the same deal here, at a glance the advertising looks pretty much fine. I wasn't initially stunned by anything I saw in that video, but GTA is a well known brand. It continues to glamorise violence and sex. It DOES impact children, therefor it cannot be left to us as individuals (parents) to censor. There is a very good reason why there are restrictions beyond our control for these issues.

I would like to state I'm not necessarily for the ban, but I am not so naive to think that everything is fine as long as you are a good parent.

Yes but this one markets to children, didn't you listen to what the man in the video said? Children are playing this and thinking it's ok to steal cars and beat people up.

show me how it markets to children  Thought it was an 18 rating?

Its the fault of the parents if they cant be a responsible parent (like the woman in the sunglasses said).

I'm thinking zefan is being sarcastic here...

just a tad...

gta should be banned.....it corrupts young minds....you see the 18 certificate on the box ?
yup no kid could have bought it legally...they STOLE it or MUGGED/MURDERED someone for the money...
see ? no gta and those people would have lived or not been robbed.

whilst we at it ...i also want a ban on toy soldiers....you see all these wars that have taken place all across the world ? yup you guessed it...caused by kids playing with toy soldiers.

. It DOES impact children

Proof please.

I don't believe a word of people who say this.

Why on earth 18 though ?

To be honest Take Two have been a bit naughty with this one. They did the same sorts of adverts (on the sides of buses) with GTA3:SA and they were pulled, presumably because it is non specific advertising and so could be aimed at kids. So with GTA4 they do the same and low and behold the adverts get pulled again. Now rather than a bunch of people in Chigaco ignoring the adverts on the side of a bus we have a news story that goes out to many thousands. Much more publicity for minimal cost.

Thats what i personally beleive, but parents should warn their kids and make sure that they knew the differance between right and wrong.

There are plenty of ad campaigns that teach bad values to kids. Most adverts promoting size zero for example are criticized but rarely taken down. The term "Violent Games" is a great example of uninformed people jumping on the bandwagon of a zeitgeist topic. Its a lot easier to place the blame for your failings on someone else, I for example watched Rambo 4 a few days ago. How brutal is that film? Did anyone bat an Eyelid? This is a film that parents will probably show their kids, just as they may let them play a GTA game.

Sorry but imo thats just plain stupid.

I've been legally allowed to buy & drink alcohol for 13 months but I can't relax and shoot a few people in GTA ?

You're saying 17 year olds, wich in the UK can control true weapons ( cars), can't control virtual ones ?

Just watched that video. What a bunch of massive idiots, you can tell as soon as the reporter starts speaking that he is a Benedict of massive proportions. "I tried to call the president of the company and his actions spoke louder than words", am I wrong but I didn't seem to hear him quoting anyone or was that the implied message? This reporters just taken an incident in Chicago and attempted to blow it completely out of proportion, and its worked.

You slipped from the effects of advertising to the actual product there. There is a difference. I could censor my children from playing any game or seeing any movie, but I do not have control over what bill boards teach them. Size zero ads are widely critisied, but this isn't a case of "fashion adverts get away with it, why can't video games?". We shouldn't take this as another "video games make children kill" argument, this is about advertising in general for the protection of our children.

Proof please.

The effects are studied, I can't give you proof, just as you cannot give me proof that video games and violent movies have no effect on children. I can point you to studies if you wish (this is the first result that I got on google, there are billions far more in depth articles). I keep using the size zero/fashion debate because I have studied it myself and therefor know more about it than I do video games, but the principle is the same. All advertising reflects an accepted way of life.

I would just like to ask everyone who has said "I played violent games, I don't murder" to please stop being so narrow minded. Of course you don't murder, but whether you like it video games and movie have molded you on some level. I am not here to say it has made you a lesser person, but if you're not willing to see the debate from any other point of view then you don't deserve to voice your opinion.
