GTA V Multiplayer thread (360, XBOX ONE, PS3 and PS4)

You can't. I don't think there is any way they can simulate the stress levels that millions of users trying to access online at the same time will put on their servers. The only way is to do what they're doing - apologise in advance and try to iron out the problems as soon as humanly possible.

It's just a shame many others can't see it that way and think it's as simple as adding a few more servers.

It is disappointing if it's server load, RockStar should have been able to adjust serves and prepare for online by using their sales figures to go on.

Well, you can plan and test this sort of thing, but on the other hand having done a fair amount of OLTP capacity planning and testing myself, I do sympathise with Rockstar- it's not easy.

I'd have expected them to overprovision resources for the launch and ramp back as necessary, rather than underprovision. Given that both the iFruit and multiplayer systems struggled, I wonder if they resourced for the initial sales forecast, and sales simply exceeded that forecast. Or deadlines slipped and testing for the online aspects was given a lower priority. Or whoever they outsourced hosting to has stuffed up. Who knows.

The problem is the massive numbers of playing straight away and the traffic is going to fall 20-30% in the first day or two then an additional 10-20% in the first week or so. That won't be due to a lack of players but the usual day 1 buzz of I must play this right now!!! Often kills the servers only for the traffic to drop dramatically over the course of a few days.

I just don't think it is feasible to have enough equipment prepared to cope with that initial influx of everyone trying to be "first" just for it to be redundant a few days/week later. Plus the whole real-world testing of this just isn't possible, I've bet they have even messed around with a couple of thousand of users in their friends and family betas but you can't simulate a few million people try to connect from all over the globe at the exact same time.

Then you have consider everyone continually trying to access the server effectively DDOS the stuff you are trying to fix.

Exactly this, they would be wasting a large amount of money putting equipment in place that would only really benefit the first week or so of launch after that most of it would be redundant and serve no purpose.

Saying oh well they earned 1 billion so it doesn't matter is daft, they also spent hundreds of millions making and marketing the game and want to maximize profits.

Not raging, but very disappointed.

DM = 1 bullet dead, I don't find that fun personally also auto-aim has a mind of it's own it seems would rather the option to have it either on or off not half way between and it not work properly

Races = fun until the what can only be described as crazed drifters (npc) come sliding into you at 1000000mph ruining your entire race :p

Can't mod stolen cars, kinda lame but gives you something to work toward earning your own.

Guns are glitchy as hell, mods and paint disapear every time you die.

There's not much to do really until the missions are fixed.

Also another thing that is annoying is the properties are not on the map, only when you go near them so you will need to either know where they are already or stop at every single one and read the description and place a marker down (or use internet to check i guess)

Well if you think it's poor then it must be pretty bad, the world seems pretty empty from the few streams I've watched. I realise though that it's going to be an ongoing thing and Rockstar said it wouldn't be great at the start.

Yes very disappointed by the lack of peds and cars

Also from watching streams, there is a lobby system for doing missions. I was hoping that this would be a bit more seamless than this.

I tried this morning, created my character, watched the intro, and then it froze, by which time I had to leave for work.

Quick question, the character name, is that unique? So, no one else can have mine? I just called him Nick (my name), so wondered if I'd manage to get in there before any other Nick did!!

My character looks like a bit of a weasel though, I might create a new one tonight when I have more time.

Does anyone have a link to a good stream so I can see what it's like?

Well, yes it is absolutely possible to resource for and test this sort of load. Plenty of testing tools available off the shelf, and if you're using entirely proprietary protocols, it's not rocket science to build your own, as I imagine Rockstar would have done.

And I doubt very much that Rockstar have rack of steaming servers, this will all be outsourced, and spinning hosting resources up and down is, again, absolutely possible and an established science.

I'm not knocking Rockstar- this is a computer game, and as such it's high-profile but not exactly important in the scheme of things, but there are plenty of industries where this sort of resource planning is tackled, and where failure really isn't an option- think banking and financial trading for a start.
