GTR Evolution

Just tried this game out a little while ago and I'm not too impressed yet. The graphics are poor for a 2008 game and it runs pretty bad too in my opinion. I've only raced with a BMW and Mini so far, so I'll give it a few more tries.

Maybe it's more fun online with a few mates in Vent/TS?

it's on nogripracing.com under the race 07 section. Quite a few good tracks on there - suzuka, spa, laguna etc

Thanks

Try having a nice looking games whilst running 24 cars on the track :p

GRID does manage 20 ;)

still it doesn't look that bad with everything on max. I was running it with all the environment details on medium without realising before changing. Road textures etc. look a lot better on max and framerate is still perfect for me.

I was having some weird issues with frame rate though - for some reason if I don't have any network connection at-all, the game starts stuttering a lot. So when my router is down I have to turn the xbox on (which is connected via ethernet) or my framerate dies :s

The graphics performance with this game does seem weird. I get really choppy framerates even on low settings. Actually I get the same amount of chop on high or low settings. Fortunately, from the cockpit view (which I always use) it seems OK. Watch a replay tho.....yuk....chop-chop-chop :(

Loving the game, but the performance is a worry considering it's hardly cutting edge in the graphics dept.

EDIT: Fixed. Turns out my nVidia drivers had messed up. Re-installed them and now it's as smooth as silk.

RE: looks......
A little bit of HDR lighting might have been nice (but not the full on "overexposed" look you get in GRID). And motion blur would seem to be beneficial in any racing game, it's a shame that only mario-kart-style games like Project Torque and GRID possess it as of now. Apart from that, I think GTRe looks very nice indeed, the nordschleife is the best I've seen, as is the "retouched" Monza.

Re:Performance........
Firstly, comparing it to GRID is silly, because GTRe has to run physics models for 20+ cars and GRID doesn't (be interesting to see how much NVphysix might help racing games). But on my machine, it runs very well indeed, 60fps (and steady enough to leave Vsync on....without all those jittery 55fps moments), GRID ran less well (before I crashed at le mans because I was lost, clocked 186mph in an f3 car, and deleted the waste of discspace), but that's almost certainly because motion blur and HRD + my stupidly high AA settings=too much work. Those reporting AWFUL performance.....do you have NV chipsets? there is an issue with the NV network access manager, it fscks some games completely (HL2ep2 stops for half a second every 4 seconds, and EA Rail Simulator just wont run, for two examples). It's a weird and random problem, and it only occurred to me because someone mentioned net connectivity having an effect.
Other than that, all I can suggest is to disable vsync unless you can hold 60fps flawlessly. In racing games, tearing is nothing like as annoying as it is in something like a shooter, but the jumping caused by frame holding with vsync on is much more distracting in them.....as I said above, 55FPS is terrible when turning a corner, to the human eye it looks almost like FIVE FPS, because there are five changes in the motion each second.

All in all, I would say it looks good, runs well, and has really good (tho *slightly* arcadified) physics and feel. My only criticism is the lack of a few more new circuits and more REAL cars, the formula fakes are a daft idea considering the lineage of both Race and GTR. Also some of the fake cars have NO feel on the brakes. I found this a problem in the original Race too....the only way to tell if you are locking up is to look in the mirror for smoke.

Annoyingly, I got an invite to test drive Iracing, the very weekend I downloaded this off steam, so it's been put very much on the back burner while I pursue my "carreer" in "virtual motorsport". It's a testament to GTRe that I can jump out of a Skippy in Iracing or my Eagle in GPL and into a GTR F3000 without thinking "what IS this nonsense????".

Formula fake? Like what? Pretty sure there is real racing based on all the cars in the game. Although I do agree about the lack of feel in some of those cars.

Some of those down in the lower rows, the GTP serieses is it? And obviously the WTCC Extremes (but they're fun).

Still, at least you don't have the F BMW's doing 200+MPH like they would if it was Grid ;)

I'll say one thing for GRID; the car damage has really spoiled me. It just seems totally rubbish in driving games (GTR:Evo included) now when you lose control, slam into something, and you just bounce off with barely a scratch :( If only they could combine GTR:Evo's gameplay with GRID's graphics and damage model...

Must be an American series, I've never even heard of it.

They run in many series all over the world, FIA GT, Le Mans Series, American Le Mans Series and the Le Mans 24hrs, plus many others throughout europe, asia and america.

Ahhh, I think I see the root of the confusion.
I thought that because the Series and Team names were made up, the cars were in some way non-authentic too. Obviously I know many cars of simillar model run in all those series.
