GTX 1070 - any takers?

I was sure I was going to get a 1070... but now want to keep a very close eye on the 480 and how much slower it really is over the Nvidia card... and conversely how much faster is it is than my current 970!

I'd say for basic blowers and cheapo small pcb KFA, Zotac, Palit, Inno it's very likely to start from 325'ish. Neat - £200 difference from cheapest 1080.

I don't think we're going to see dirt cheap retail 980's and ti's although I do think second hand prices are going to take a huge bath, especially if today's news from AMD and the RX480 comes to pass.

I've been waiting for a 980ti used, but unwilling to pay over £200, but, I'm not going to bother now though if I can get a new card with warranty for more or less the same cash.

I hope AMD pull this off, the graphics card market - read Nvidia - needs serious competition, the pricing recently is becoming a joke.

:D good luck with that.

my wallet keeps bouncing off the screen and no 1070 has arrived yet!

cant wait for the after market coolers to go up after the founders editions are released.

do we know if they will be available on release day or are we gonna have a few weeks wait?

LOL, yeah, won't happen. No one is going to sell for that. The only people selling 980Ti's are going to be those looking at the 1080, and when you see the performance difference, no sane person would even dream of spending an extra £350-400 for what they'd get over a 980Ti. So keep dreaming.

I'm not so sure that a 1070 is a sensible upgrade for a 970 either - as the 1080 seems to me to have twice the increase in performance over the 970 that the 1070 has, and price wise can be had for £550 whereas the 1070 may well be £350. Before when the 970 was £260 and closer to 980 performance things were clearer.

If you have a much earlier or no GPU then the 1070 is very interesting but I do wonder whether many people will be quite happy with a 480 for 1080p gaming if its around £200.

The 1070 provides 60FPS (at least) at 1440p on max settings, something the GTX 970 definitely can't do. For that reason it may be worth it, especially if you don't want to spend another £200 for the 1080.

The 480 is probably the best option for 1080p gaming though. Until we have more benchmarks for it at least

The 1070 will get very good reviews but when it comes to people spending their own money the retail price of £350+ could be too much for 1080p users but it's not good enough for 4K.

The 970 was popular because it was reasonably priced, great for 1080p, and had no competition (until DX12 came along!)- then the 980 wasn't needed. This time round enthusiasts will go for the 1080 and mainstream 1080p users might well just settle for the 480 or 1060.

Where does that leave 1440p gamers who don't want to spend £200+ for the performance gain of a 1080 over the 1070?

I have doubts that a 480 will be a good card for 1440p max settings.

I just mean that there aren't enough 1440p gamers to make the 1070 the popular card the 970 is - and if you have a 4K TV you're going to wish you had gone for the 1080.

Think you might want to take a look at the resolution thread/poll :p

1920x1080 is the most dominant resolution for PC gamers so GTX1070 is going to sell a lot of GPU's & the 980 Ti market is going to drop to around 50% of what the new prices were at launch until channel stock runs out. Expect some deals on those though as the vendors find some unsold stock like last year when OCUK got a great deal on GTX 780 Ti's for £199.99!!

History has shown this massive depreciation to be the case on almost every high end GPU released in the last 10 years! If anyone thinks their existing GTX980 Ti is going to hold its value they are in for a massive shock!! (I own a GTX980Ti as well but accept its going to lose a lot of value shortly so will keep it as its going to run games smoothly for at least another 12-18 months).

People will only sell for what buyers are willing to pay, when the new cards (such as the 480) are launched the prices of used kit will plummet, happened before and will do so again especially give the large jump in performance from the new generation cards.

I'm sorry but the dreamers are the ones who think things like 980's will hold value on the second hand market, they won't and are already falling.

Roughly what % increase at 1080p would a 1070 be over a 980?

Assuming around £200ish for my decentish 980 so prob £150 extra to upgrade?
