Being condescending doesn't make you correct.

Being nVidia though...
Haha, you are a legend
can't argue with that!
If some dude in India said "yes it is" it definitely makes you correct, right.

I can understand what he's saying. The X80Ti and Titan are pretty much in a class of their own.
HOWEVER that does not mean X80 and X70 cards are mid-tier. That's ridiculous.
Literally a representative of nVidia who has been told what to call them.
He said high performance not high endLiterally a representative of nVidia who has been told what to call them.
He said high performance not high endIt's a pointless arguement anyway. Clearly the 1070 is meant to replace the 970 and it's not a good thing for consumers that it's likely to be significantly more expensive.
We'll see whether 970 owners think it's worth that much. I think a lot of them will just keep their 970s.
LOL, what does "high end" even mean?? It's such a vague term. High end for what? 1080p? Then yeah, 1070 is high end for that. 4K? No, not even close. 1440p? A 1080 is high end for that because you can pretty much max everything out and enjoy smooth high frame rate. 4K, no, because it still struggles. No such thing as a high end 4K card yet. So whether something is high end or not, as far as I'm concerned, entirely comes down to what the intended use is. A Porsche 911 is a high end sports car... doesn't mean I'm going to be winning Le Mans 24 with one that I drive out the showroom with. The Le Mans cars are also high end, but just high end with a different purpose and higher spec for more demanding use. Try racing an F1 car in one though, and it falls flat. So again, high end classification depends on use.

Do we know a release date for 1070?
Feel sorry for the people on higher res actually.

Same goes for AMD, the 7950 was high end despite the 7970 existing. The 290 was high end despite the 290x. Calling them mid range is just trying to discredit the product and being argumentative.
Thank you.

And also just to point out this stupid argument keeps arising again and again.. The whole thing is pathetic. I'm sure NVIDIA would class any X70, X80 and Titan card as a high performance card. Any other 'tiers' that we want to make up for ourselves is exactly that, made up.
And that's the only reason?
Surely implementation of generational price hikes benefits nobody but the manufacturer.
It's bizarre because in all other areas of tech prices are coming down. GPUs are the only exception to that rule that I can think of and it is because one manufacturer pretty much has an unhindered monopoly on the market.
Lets be clear pricing of 1070 and 1080 is a joke. Whoever thinks it is not is either new to the graphics card game, isn't familiar with "monopoly" term or have not analysed previous releases and where they stand in the product portfolio.
There is another thread that I stareted that is discussing pricing of 1080/1070 "£700 for gtx 1080 (aka new 980) - ehmmm..no thank you!"
Basically nvidia released mid tier 1080 and priced it higher than the high end card just because they can. And yes of course its (marginaly) faster than anything else, what did you expect? slower? that's the way it is with the technology these days.
Personally, I will be happy with MSI/Asus anything below £400 not because I think it a fair price but because I come into terms with Nvidia's monopoly and arising from this rip off and disrespectfull practises. If there was a serious competition I would ditch nvidia in the blink of an eye.
Then you get 1080p 144hz and a GTX 1080 can't even max that out either, Feel sorry for the people on higher res actually.
Well, just want to point out that the 7970 and 7950 were the same chip, just like the 290x and the 290 were the same chip. Both were the high end parts that AMD had out that year. In the AMD lineup you wouldn't call them mid range parts.
Trooper you say it's hard for us to classify cards etc. and that people make up their own. I fully agree with you. So I don't use price as a guide I base my classification on the chips they use.
Nivida make the top of the line cards from the high end chips. And they make the mid range cards from the mid range chips. Which makes sense, you don't make a high end card from a mid range chip!! Mid range chips are much cheaper to produce too. Sometimes they have used the high end chip for both their high end and mid range cards. Like the GT200 was used in 280 GTX and 260 GTX.
Look at some of the great mid range cards from previous generations, the 560 and 560ti (made from the GF114 chip) The 460 GTX (made from the GF104 chip)
And the high end cards from the same generations, the 580 and 570 GTX( made from the GF110) and the 480 and 470 GTX(made from the GF100)
So previously the x80 and x70 cards were all high end, they were made from the Gxxx0 chips.
Now look at what is happening, the x80 and x70 cards which used to be made from the high end Gxxx0 chips are now been made from the mid range Gxxx4 chips. And the Titan and x80ti ranges are been made from the Gxxx0 chips.
examples, the 980 and 970(made from the GM104) The Titan-x and 980Ti(made from the GM100) The 1080 and 1070 (made from the GP104) The 680 and 670 GTX (made from the GK104)
The only true high end x80 card in the last few years was the 780, that was was made from the GK110, the same chip the original Titan was made from and which is why it was so close in performance to the Titan.
The 1080 and 1070 are mid range cards built from mid range parts. Just like the 980 and 970 were. The x80 and x70 cards are not the same as the x70 and x80 cards from pre 2012. In fact the x70 and x80 cards from this generation would be called the x60, x60ti or xxxx GT pre 2012.
Why does this matter? Well a classic example of why it matters is when the 7970 and 7950 launched, they were released at a silly high price. Then when the 680 and 670 launched there was so much fuss about a mid range card from Nvidia beating the high end card from AMD that the AMD cards soon dropped in price.
And that was good because the 680 and 670 were mid range, even though I thought they too were priced a little high, it did bring down the prices of the AMD cards.
Is the 1080 the fastest card out there at the moment? Sure, but look at the price we are paying. And then saying it's cheap because the Titan-x costs over £800.
I know I am fighting a losing battle, because nobody cares. But we should care. We should be spreading the word that no, we won't pay high end prices for mid range cards anymore. This isn't about AMD, or Nvidia or what you can and can't afford. Nvidia have been pushing the price tiers up with the release of the Titan. Instead of rebelling like when AMD tried to push their prices up, we are rewarding Nvidia by buying their cards in droves.
And the fact that the 1080 is a mid range card doesn't seem to matter anymore. It's the fastest out now!! Buy it quickly!! go go go!!
People are gone crazy.
Are we talking smooth playable maxed out or simply FPS, because they aren't necessarily the same, and people will have different expectations. A 1080 can max out 1440p. It's overkill for 1080p, although I've obviously not tested every game to see what FPS it will pull. It's hardly going to hit 144FPS in every game, but who realistically expects that?? You certainly don't NEED to be getting 144FPS to enjoy smooth gameplay lol! It's just a case of maxing out everything at a very high frame rate and it staying there for the duration. What someone deems 'very high' is going to vary of course, but if a 1080 is consistently getting circa 100+ FPS in most games at 1440p maxed out, it's doing pretty well and I think would be worthy of the 'high end' badge. If people deem 'high end' to be 144FPS in every game maxed out, then there is officially no such thing as 'high end' LOL!![]()
