GTX 1070 - any takers?

I have a EVGA 1080 Hybrid on preorder. If the high end 1070 models end up around £350 (which I personally doubt), I'll have to seriously consider cancelling my 1080 order and buying two 1070s.

One thing the reviews show though is that the 1080's performance jump over the 980 Ti is not insignificant at all as some have made it out to be.

had 970 in sli and found single card setup better (as long as you can get fps you want)

yeah, def. if you want significant jump over 980ti, 1080 isn't the card as it will only give you 10-30% boost. wait for 1080ti

looks like clown (founders) version is going to be £400.
If we go with 1080 pricing e.g. founders costing the same as good 3rd party, MSI/EVGA/Asus 1070 will be £400

I'll probably get the Gigabyte 1070 G1 card. One 8 pin power should be enough for this card.

This will be the one I opt for I believe unless something more solid about the AMD offering is released. Since jumping to 1440p at Christmas the 970 just hasn't had the right amount of kick.

So hopefully these will be reasonably priced.

Seems to be a nice upgrade for my HTPC which has an r9 290 at the moment.

Will still have to see the prices and AMD offerings.

Yeah, I may do the same. gtx 1070 looks like a very good 1440p card for a (hopefully) reasonable price.
970 is very good card for 1080p but struggles in 1440p if you want to get over 60fps.

Ditto here, unless AMD has something better I'm going with this I think. Think I will pair it with a decent 1440p gsync monitor and call it a day.

I used SLI 980 Tis for almost ten months and the experience was very good overall. Only the heat and noise were proving disruptive for me, which is why I want to move to a setup that's quieter and cooler, even if it's less powerful overall.

The 970 memory issue is heavily exacerbated when in SLI... 1070 will have this problem too due to the memory controller structure being practically the same as 970.

980/980Ti/TitanX don't have that problem.

SLI with those cards or the 1080 will be a good experience.

Does the new SLI HB Bridge affect this?

But it has 8GB. Games aren't going to use >7GB of vram, at least not for a good while. The 970 problem only kicked in when games needed to use that last 0.5GB.

I recommend Dell S2716DG. Have been using it for a few months now and it's very good. Had TN Rog swift before but 2 units failed

not the same. the 1070 has the same amount of L2 and ROPS as the 1080. 970 and 980 were different.

You're the only person I've ever seen mention this. Has anyone shown the 1070 has the same issues the 970 had with its 3.5/0.5 GB setup.

- heat
- noise
- little things (e.g. enabling sli after new drivers installation)
- lack of sli drivers for some games
- microstutters / frametime issues
- minimum framerates not great
- OC not as high as with a single card

Apart from that I enjoyed sli

People have such low expectations now after so many years on 28NM. I looked at the Hexus review of the GTX670 and it destroyed the GTX580 and that was comparing reference cards:

Even,TPU confirmed the GTX670 was 20% faster than a GTX580.

The GTX1070 can barely beat a GTX980TI.

That 20% faster GPU is now the GTX1080 which costs £525.

You shouldnt have a problem with Doom/Dying Light/Dark Souls 3 tbh, I get like 100fps on Doom/Dying light and a solid 60 on DS3 maxed at 1080p on a 2500k and 980

Arkham Knight, Ark Survival and Dead Rising 3 are all terribly optimised so I dont know if a 1070 will help you there.

I think this gen is a huge dissapointment, I was expecting 100%+ increases from a node shrink after all this time on 28nm. Instead we get +20% cards at higher prices than even seen before for a x70/x80 card.

Bring on Vega (and please be good)

I no longer have interest in traditional GDDR since the introduction of HBM. It makes the card so small. But at this price and this kind of performance it is really tempting.

No, it's the GPU core and how it references the memory through the memory controller that is the issue... external connections like PCI-E or SLI bridge don't come into the equation as they are past the source of the issue.

That's not accurate... there was no such implementation of the memory - that was a rumour spread by a few people but not what actually happens.

The whole 4GB is addressed, if something happens to be referenced in the slow 0.5GB - then it causes delays in loading of textures and frame rate hitching which is rather unpleasant... it's clear to observe even when only 1-3GB of memory is in active use.
