Made the above changes to my GTX480 (yes 480) a month ago and it also runs cooler and quieter. From memory I set the idle volts to 0.65v and load volts to 0.85v for "stock clocks".
I used a modded Asus bios for my GTX480 which sets the idle voltage to 0.7v but theres obviously a limit on how low it can go because when checking with GPU-Z the voltage is 0.82v. But I got a 7 degrees drop in temperature @idle
Playing games @ 820 core I get about 76 degrees which is usually about 56% fan which isn't bad.

That's a nice stock volts you got there Jakus. My stock voltage on the asus card was set at 1.013v at 742 core clock (10 more than reference lol).
At 1.013v stock I can go 790 core 1050 memory tops.
At 1.088v I can go 870 core, 1050 memory.
For 900 core, 1000 memory I need 1.138.
With All the above temps are pretty decent. I adjusted the fan profile so that it sits around 80 degrees with fan around 75%. This is in a p182 case with viper fans all round including the middle intake fan.
Suprisingly, the asus card comes with voltage unlocked all the way to 1.213v at which I have done a few runs of Heaven at 930 core, 1180 memory. But temp was around 85 degrees with fan around 85% which is a bit too loud for me.
Overclocking the memory doesn't produce any noticable gains in Heaven so I kept that low as I can then take the core higher with less volts.
I have settled on 850 core, 1050 memory at 1.063v for me it was the best of temps/fan noise.
Next mod is a 120/140mm fan at 45degrees on the bottom of the case blowing right up its chuff I want middle-late 60's max on auto fan....it's a pain manually setting fan or fan app to run.

The first one was a Zotac, I settled at a stable 1.037v with 880 mhz, then about 2 months later my PC shut down randomly while playing mw2. I then went back onto mw2, played a match for 3 minutes, crashed.

PC wouldn't turn on.
So I sent the card back and got an asus in return. that's not bad right? everyone loves asus! wrong.
I tried getting my clocks back but it turns out on my new card I need 1.150 V to achieve the same clocks.
Strange failure, if electronics get over the first few hours they are normally good for most 80% of their life, bet You wished You tripple checked the card before sending back now ! Asus motherboards yes, gfx cards not so much, they often mess with them
I forgot to mention I smelt burning coming from the GTX 570.
I also have one, however I am pretty much a temperature freak, my card never went over 55oC at full load, idles at 27-28oC, seems good. Do you notice great gains in the OC?? My card has been pretty much destroying all I throw at it.

No watercool, no overclock and that is the temperature that both smart doctor and speedfan softwares show. Under 30oC at idle and around 50oC at peak. Let me know if there is another more reliable way let me know. I live in Portugal so hardly cold, probably around 20oC room temperature.
Also worth mentioning that I have it setup to trigger 50-60% fans on 50oC

.Yes, I would think the std nvidia cooler @ about 85% fan could keep the card under 60c at max load, so gaming at 55c sounds about right..The reference Nvidia coolers are excellent, quiet and powerful and dump a good majority of the hot air out the back of the case
Also to answer your previous question, it depends on what you mean by 'great gains'. I know an overclocked GTX 570 performs at least on par with a GTX 580. I'd like to assume this is similiar for other cards to, that overclocking would get you on par or more to the next card up.
ie, OCd 560 = stock 570, OCd 460 = stock 470
